Can You Take Mounjaro If You Have a Heart Condition? (October 2026)

Sometimes, but it depends on your specific heart diagnosis and must be decided by a prescriber who has your full history. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, so a heart condition needs individual review. Your prescriber, and ideally your cardiologist, should review your records first.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • There is no single answer for every heart condition: the diagnosis, how stable it is and your current medicines all matter.
  • Mounjaro is prescription-only and is supplied after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.
  • Tell the prescriber about every heart diagnosis, procedure, symptom and medicine, including anything recent.
  • Read the patient information leaflet and the SmPC, and ask your cardiologist or GP if you are unsure.
  • Report any new symptoms to your prescriber and through the Yellow Card scheme.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Can you take Mounjaro with heart problems?

Whether you can take Mounjaro with heart problems is a clinical judgement for a prescriber who has your full history.

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

02 · Your next step

What to do if you have a heart condition

Start with the people who already know your heart. If you see a cardiologist, a heart failure nurse or a GP about your condition, ask them directly whether tirzepatide is suitable for you. Take your diagnosis, your latest results and your medicine list to that conversation.

If you then want to go ahead privately, our Mounjaro pen consultation is free. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers, not a scoring script, and unsuitable orders are refunded automatically. For the wider picture, see our weight loss clinic overview.

You can also read our related guides on heart conditions and tirzepatide and on heart failure and Mounjaro.

03 · Why it is personal

Why the answer is personal

For Mounjaro, the SmPC and the patient information leaflet set out who can and cannot take it, and they are the first thing to read.113 Our prescribers apply them to your history, not to a general category such as "heart problems".

Heart conditions differ widely. A past heart attack, a rhythm problem, heart failure, high blood pressure and a recent procedure are very different situations. Each can mean a different level of caution, and your other medicines matter too.

04 · What to tell us

What to tell your prescriber

Give the full picture in your consultation.

  • Every heart diagnosis you have been given, and when.
  • Any heart attack, stent, bypass, pacemaker or other procedure.
  • Symptoms such as palpitations, breathlessness, chest pain or swelling — get medical help straight away for chest pain, a racing heart or difficulty breathing.
  • All current medicines, including blood pressure tablets, blood thinners and diabetes treatments.
  • Any other conditions, such as a history of pancreatitis.

If you have a long-term condition affecting another body system, such as multiple sclerosis, say so as well. It all feeds into the same safety review.

05 · Weight and heart health

Weight loss and heart health

Many people with heart conditions are also told to lose weight, and that is a reasonable reason to ask about treatment. It does not change the need for individual review. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

These are trial averages, and individual results vary. The trial figures describe weight loss, not what happens in any particular heart condition.

06 · NHS or private

NHS or private route

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.46

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why some people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment. If you do, the same safety questions apply.

07 · If symptoms change

If you notice new symptoms

Get medical help straight away for chest pain, a racing heart or fainting. Tell your prescriber or GP about any other new or worsening symptom.

You can also report a suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 If you stop treatment, tirzepatide takes about four to five weeks to clear the system, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1

08 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

How ordering works

How ordering works at EverydayMeds

Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.

  1. EverydayMeds online consultation on a mobile phone

    Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes

Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.

  2. A clinician ready to review an online consultation

Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day

A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.

  3. An EverydayMeds delivery box

    Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.

Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.

Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can heart patients take Mounjaro?
Some can, but it depends on the condition, how stable it is and what else you take. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your history before any supply, and your cardiologist or GP can advise on your own situation first.
Can you take Mounjaro if you've had a heart attack?
A past heart attack does not automatically rule treatment in or out. Your prescriber needs to know when it happened, what treatment followed and which medicines you take now. Check with your cardiologist or GP too, and read the patient information leaflet before starting.
What conditions stop you from taking Mounjaro?
You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation.
Can you take weight loss injections with a heart condition?
It depends on the person and the medicine, so each case needs individual review. See our guide to weight loss injections and heart conditions. Discuss it with your cardiologist or GP before ordering anything privately.
Which weight loss drug is best for heart patients?
The choice depends on your diagnosis, other medicines and goals. Your cardiologist, GP or prescriber can weigh the options against your own history.
What do cardiologists recommend for weight loss?
Weight management advice usually starts with diet and activity suited to your condition, and medicines may be discussed where appropriate. Ask your own cardiology team what is safe for you, particularly before changing exercise levels.
Does a heart condition mean I can't get Mounjaro on the NHS?
Not necessarily. NHS access is being phased in over several years, and NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. Ask your GP whether you qualify and how local access is organised.
