A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Antidepressants are not automatically a barrier to Mounjaro, but a GPhC-registered prescriber must review your exact medicines and history first.
  • Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, so tell your prescriber about every tablet, capsule or liquid you take by mouth.
  • Never stop or change an antidepressant dose by yourself because you are starting a weight-loss injection.
  • Report any change in mood, sleep or appetite to your prescriber, and report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
  • Mounjaro works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity, not instead of them.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Can you take Mounjaro if you are on antidepressants?

In many cases yes, but only after a clinician has reviewed your medicines, your diagnosis and your overall health. "Antidepressants" covers several different drug families, and each person's history is different.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes1. It activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties1. That is a very different action from an antidepressant, which is why a short answer is tempting.

02 · What to do next

The decision you are actually facing

Your real question is probably: "Is Mounjaro suitable for me, given what I take and how I am feeling?" Three things shape the answer.

  • Which medicines you take. List every prescription, over-the-counter product and supplement, including the exact antidepressant name and dose.
  • How stable your mental health is. If your mood is changing or your treatment is being adjusted, talk to your GP or mental health team before adding a new medicine.
  • Your other conditions and treatments. Other long-term medicines matter just as much as the antidepressant.

If you are well-established on treatment and your GP is happy, the next step is a consultation. Tell us everything in the questionnaire, because it is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script. You can start with a free consultation.

03 · At a glance

What each side of the question looks like

QuestionWhat is known
Is Mounjaro automatically ruled out by antidepressants? Not as a general rule; the prescriber reviews your exact medicines and history.
Does Mounjaro affect oral medicines? It slows how quickly the stomach empties, so oral medicines are always checked1.
Should I stop my antidepressant first? No. Never change a mental health medicine without your prescriber's advice.
Where is the official detail? The SmPC and the patient information leaflet113, and the BNF11.
Who to tell about mood changes?Your prescriber and your GP. If your mood drops or you have distressing thoughts, seek help promptly.

For wider reading on this topic, see our guide on antidepressants alongside GLP-1 medicines.

04 · Why the answer varies

Why "antidepressants" is not one answer

The word antidepressant covers several families of medicine, and they differ in how they work, how the body processes them and how they interact with other drugs.

The Mounjaro SmPC and patient information leaflet set out what is known about the medicine and its interactions113. The BNF gives prescribers dosing and safety information for tirzepatide11.

If you want a more specific read on your own situation, the pages on combining Mounjaro with antidepressants and on staying on your antidepressant during treatment cover related angles.

05 · Stomach emptying

Stomach emptying and oral medicines

Mounjaro slows how quickly the stomach empties, and this is part of how it helps you feel fuller sooner1. Because most antidepressants are taken as tablets, capsules or liquids, your prescriber needs a complete list of everything you swallow.

Check the leaflet that comes with your pen, and ask the pharmacy or your prescriber if anything is unclear13.

One practical habit helps. Keep taking your antidepressant at the same time each day, exactly as prescribed, and do not alter timing or doses yourself because you have started an injection. If you feel your antidepressant is working differently once Mounjaro begins, contact your prescriber rather than adjusting anything on your own.

06 · Mood and mental health

Watching your mood while on Mounjaro

The EMA's safety committee reviewed the evidence in 2024 and concluded that it does not support a causal link between GLP-1 medicines and suicidal thoughts; the MHRA keeps this under continuous review17. Any big change in weight, appetite and routine can affect how you feel, so tell your prescriber about any history of depression, and seek help promptly if your mood drops or you have distressing thoughts during treatment. If you ever feel at risk of harming yourself, get medical help straight away.

If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. Tell your prescriber about any change in your mood while taking Mounjaro.

If you notice a symptom you think might be a side effect, you can report it through the Yellow Card scheme19. Reports help the regulator monitor medicines.

Can you take Mounjaro if you have depression?

Depression does not have a simple yes or no here. Having depression, with or without medicine, is something your prescriber will want to understand fully: how long you have been stable, what you take and who supports your care. Be honest in the consultation. A candid answer lets the prescriber make a safe decision.

07 · Weight and antidepressants

Losing weight while on antidepressants

Weight is a common worry for people on antidepressants, and it is a legitimate reason to ask for help.

Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone2. These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them2.

If you are reading about rapid targets, treat those with caution. Dramatic weight-loss claims are a reason to be sceptical, not encouraged.

If you are also curious about whether antidepressants themselves suppress appetite, our page on antidepressants and appetite covers that separately.

08 · Who cannot use injections

Who cannot use weight loss injections?

Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.

The categories we ask you about during a consultation are straightforward: your age, your height and weight, your medical conditions, your current medicines, and circumstances such as pregnancy or breastfeeding. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

Be wary of any seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription. That is a red flag for unsafe or counterfeit products, and the MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts7. Our pens come through official LillyDirect supply, directly from Eli Lilly's UK distribution.

09 · Medicines to discuss

What medications are not compatible with Mounjaro?

Because Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, it can affect how quickly some oral medicines are absorbed, particularly when you start treatment or increase the dose1.

When you complete a consultation, include the following so nothing is missed:

  • Every antidepressant or other mental health medicine, with the dose.
  • Any diabetes treatment, because doses of some may need adjusting.
  • Oral contraception, because Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. Switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.
  • Everything else you swallow regularly, including supplements and over-the-counter products.

If you want to see how the question looks for other injections, our page on weight loss injections and antidepressants takes the wider view.

10 · NHS or private

What are the NHS eligibility criteria for Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions)46. Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

Ask your GP how your own situation fits NHS criteria. The NHS guide to tirzepatide is a good starting point5.

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can you take Mounjaro if you take antidepressants?
In many cases yes, but it depends on which medicines you take and your wider health. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your full medicines list before approving treatment. Do not stop or change your antidepressant yourself. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, so every oral medicine is considered during the consultation.
Can you take weight loss injections with antidepressants?
Often this is possible, but there is no single rule covering every injection and every antidepressant. The product information for the specific medicine, plus a prescriber's review of your medicines and history, decides it. Always disclose your antidepressant and its dose during the consultation, and raise any mood changes promptly afterwards.
Can you take Mounjaro if you have depression?
Depression does not automatically rule Mounjaro out, but it is something your prescriber needs to understand. Be open about your diagnosis, treatment and how stable you feel. If your mood changes once you start, tell your prescriber and GP promptly rather than waiting for it to settle.
What medications are not compatible with Mounjaro?
The definitive source is the interaction information in the Mounjaro SmPC and patient leaflet. Medicines that deserve discussion include diabetes treatments, whose doses may need adjusting. Mounjaro can also reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed: switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 4 weeks after starting and after each dose increase. List everything you take in your consultation so a prescriber can check it.
How can I lose weight while on antidepressants?
Weight management usually combines a reduced-calorie diet, increased physical activity and, where suitable, a licensed medicine such as Mounjaro. Talk to your prescriber or GP first, and never alter your antidepressant to try to change your weight. Results vary from person to person.
Who cannot use weight loss injections?
You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, or during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Mounjaro should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have had pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription should be avoided.
What are the NHS eligibility criteria for Mounjaro injections?
NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions. Access is being phased in over several years, so ask your GP.
Should I tell my GP I am starting Mounjaro?
Yes, it is sensible to tell your GP, especially if you take antidepressants or other long-term medicines. They know your history and can support monitoring. Tell your prescriber and GP about any change in mood, and report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme. If you have thoughts of harming yourself, get help straight away: call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger.
