Can You Be on Weight Loss Medication While Breastfeeding? (October 2026)

Whether you can take weight loss medication while breastfeeding depends on the medicine, and there is no single answer for all of them. For Mounjaro, current prescribing information indicates minimal transfer of tirzepatide into breast milk, and the decision should still be made with a prescriber who knows your circumstances.1 Supplements and unlicensed products have no such assessment.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • There is no blanket yes or no: each weight loss medicine has its own product information, and breastfeeding is assessed medicine by medicine.
  • For Mounjaro, prescribing information indicates minimal transfer of tirzepatide into breast milk, but you should discuss breastfeeding with your prescriber.
  • Supplements marketed for weight loss are not assessed for breastfeeding and carry no clinical oversight.
  • Reduced appetite matters while nursing, so tell your prescriber how much and how often your baby feeds.
  • Mounjaro must not be used in pregnancy, so plan contraception and any future pregnancy with your prescriber.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Can you take weight loss medication while breastfeeding?

It depends on which medicine you mean, and a prescriber should make that call with you. Some medicines have prescribing information that addresses breastfeeding directly. Others have little or nothing to go on, and the sensible position for those is to wait or to ask for specialist advice.

That is not the same as a blanket all-clear. It means the decision is individual.

Our wider guides cover the same question from different angles: weight loss drugs while breastfeeding and whether any weight loss medications are safe.

02 · Your next step

The two decisions you are actually facing

The first decision is whether you need medicine now or can wait. Many parents choose to wait until their baby is established on solid food or until breastfeeding finishes. That is a reasonable choice, and nothing about weight management is urgent in a way that forces your hand.

The second decision, if you do not want to wait, is which option you can discuss with a prescriber who has your full history. A dedicated page on Mounjaro and breastfeeding goes through that conversation in detail.

When you are ready to talk it through, the Mounjaro consultation is free and is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Tell them you are breastfeeding at the start. Our weight loss clinic page explains the wider service.

03 · What Mounjaro information says

What the Mounjaro prescribing information says

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1

Your prescriber will weigh your baby's age, how often you feed, your own health and your medicines. For a fuller walk-through see our complete Mounjaro breastfeeding guide and the side effects and safety guide.

04 · Appetite, feeding and recovery

Appetite, milk supply and recovery after birth

Reduced appetite is the effect to think about most while nursing. Tirzepatide helps regulate appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties. In practice most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.2

That is helpful for a reduced-calorie diet, but breastfeeding and recovering from birth both ask a lot of your body. Eating regular, nourishing meals still matters. Tell your prescriber how often you feed and whether you notice any change in how you feel, and raise concerns early rather than waiting for a review.

Your prescriber and health visitor can advise on a pace that suits you.

05 · Supplements and other products

Supplements, teas and "natural" alternatives

Products sold as natural alternatives are not safer simply because they are natural. They are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight, and dosing is not standardised. Nobody has assessed them for use while breastfeeding in the way a licensed medicine is assessed.

The same caution applies to dramatic weight-loss claims on social media. Be wary of sellers offering to supply a prescription medicine without a consultation or prescription. Counterfeit and unregulated products can contain unknown ingredients, which is a particular worry when you are feeding a baby.

If you have already taken something, speak to a pharmacist or your GP. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice.

06 · Pregnancy and contraception

Contraception and planning another pregnancy

Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.1 Our page on weight loss medication in pregnancy covers this further.

Contraception needs thought too. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method such as condoms, for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. This applies to the pill only; implants, coils and injections are unaffected.17

07 · Who is not suitable

Who should not take Mounjaro

You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive.1

Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems.13 Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. Share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation, including anything you take for thyroid conditions. Our guide on weight loss medication with levothyroxine explains how interactions are handled.

08 · Losing weight without medicine

Losing weight while breastfeeding without medication

Online claims about how much breastfeeding burns, or how much you can lose in a month, vary widely and should be treated with caution.

Sensible steps are the dull ones: regular meals, enough fluids, gentle activity as you recover, and sleep where you can get it. Pumping does not turn into a weight loss plan either. Your health visitor, midwife or GP can set a realistic pace with you.

Many people also find weight is easier to manage once feeding patterns settle or breastfeeding ends, but this varies from person to person, so plan around your own circumstances rather than a rule of thumb.

09 · NHS and private routes

NHS and private routes

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.45

Because full rollout will take years, some people choose regulated private treatment. If you go private, make sure the pharmacy is on the GPhC register.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can you be on weight loss medication while breastfeeding?
It depends on the medicine, so there is no single answer. For Mounjaro, current prescribing information indicates minimal transfer of tirzepatide into breast milk, and you should discuss breastfeeding with your prescriber so the decision reflects your circumstances. For other products, check the leaflet and ask a prescriber or pharmacist before starting.
Has anyone breastfed on Mounjaro?
Current prescribing information indicates minimal transfer of tirzepatide into breast milk. Your prescriber will consider your baby's age, your feeding pattern and your health before agreeing whether treatment is right for you.
What weight loss medication is safe while breastfeeding?
No medicine can be called safe for everyone. Mounjaro has prescribing information indicating minimal transfer into breast milk, but the decision is individual. Supplements are not assessed for breastfeeding. For any other prescription product, read its patient leaflet and ask your GP, pharmacist or our prescribing team.
Is it actually possible to lose weight while breastfeeding?
Yes, many people do, usually gradually through regular meals, fluids and gentle activity as they recover. Your health visitor, midwife or GP can help you set a realistic pace that protects your energy and your feeding.
Will it be easier to lose weight when I stop breastfeeding?
It varies from person to person. Some people find routines and appetite settle once feeding changes, which makes planning simpler. If you are considering medicine, stopping breastfeeding removes the breastfeeding question, but you would still need a full suitability review.
Does Mounjaro affect milk supply or my baby?
Prescribing information indicates minimal transfer of tirzepatide into breast milk. Reduced appetite can affect how well you eat, so tell your prescriber how often you feed and report any concerns promptly.
When can I start Mounjaro after I finish breastfeeding?
You still need a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and you must avoid pregnancy during treatment. Mounjaro should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive, so discuss contraception and future plans at the start.
