A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Whether your own GP writes a private Mounjaro prescription depends on the practice. There is no automatic right to one.
  • A private prescription means you pay for the pen yourself. The £9.90 NHS prescription charge only applies to NHS prescriptions.
  • The licensed criteria are the same privately: BMI 30 or above, or 27 to 30 with a weight-related condition.
  • If your GP says no, a GPhC-registered online pharmacy is a regular route. The 2.5mg starting pen is £169.99 per month.
  • NHS access is being phased in over several years, so many eligible adults look at private treatment.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

Will my GP write a private prescription for Mounjaro?

It depends on the practice. Any doctor with the right registration can legally issue a private prescription, but a surgery is not obliged to offer private weight-management prescribing, and many GPs focus on NHS care. Some practices run a private clinic alongside it. Others will simply say it is not a service they provide.

The quickest way to find out is to ask the surgery directly: "Do you offer private prescriptions for weight-loss medicines, and is there a fee for the appointment?" You may be told to book a private appointment, which usually costs extra on top of the medicine. For a wider look at what your surgery can and cannot do, see our guide on whether a GP can give weight loss injections.

Even when a GP agrees, they will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether Mounjaro suits you.1 A private prescription is not a shortcut around that assessment.

02 · Your options

Private GP, NHS or online prescriber: which fits you?

Each route suits a different person.

RouteWho it suitsWhat you payMain catch
NHS prescription via your GP or a weight-management serviceAdults who meet the NHS criteria for the current rollout stageThe NHS prescription charge of £9.90 in England, unless exemptAccess is phased, so you may not yet qualify
Private prescription from your own GPPeople whose practice offers private prescribingAny appointment fee, plus the full cost of the medicineThe practice may not offer it, and you still need a pharmacy to dispense
Online consultation with a registered pharmacyAdults who meet the licensed criteria and want a single route from review to deliveryThe pen price shown; the consultation is freeYou are not under NHS care, so tell your GP you are treating yourself

The NHS route costs the least if you qualify. NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than wait.

03 · If your GP declines

What to do if your GP says no

If your GP declines, you still have options, and the refusal is not a clinical judgement that you can never take Mounjaro. Ask whether it is a policy decision (the practice does not do private weight-management prescribing) or a clinical one (they think it is unsuitable for you). If it is clinical, ask what would need to change.

If it is a policy decision, you can use a regulated online service. Our free online consultation is a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.

Your first Mounjaro pen at the 2.5mg starting dose costs £169.99 at the standard price. New customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25).

04 · Who can get Mounjaro privately

Who can get Mounjaro on a private prescription?

The licensing is the same whether you go through the NHS or privately. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Examples include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.111

It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable. Private does not mean easier to qualify for: it means a different route to the same clinical decision.

If you want to read more on how doctors approach this, our pages on whether a doctor can give you Mounjaro and whether your GP can prescribe it cover the NHS side.

05 · Private prescription at a pharmacy

Can you take a private prescription to an NHS pharmacy?

You can present a private prescription at a community pharmacy, but the pharmacy decides whether to dispense it, and you pay the full price. The NHS prescription charge of £9.90 applies only to NHS prescriptions, so it does not reduce the cost of a private one.

Practical points are worth checking before you go. The pharmacy may not hold the dose you need. Mounjaro is a cold-chain medicine, so many pharmacies order it in for you. Prices differ between providers for the same dose. Across the UK pharmacies we track, Mounjaro pens range from £143.96 to £339.00 per month depending on dose and provider (checked 11 October 2026). The gap between providers for the same dose ranges from £27 to £41, so it pays to compare before you commit.

Our own route skips that step. Prescriber review, dispensing and delivery all happen through one registered pharmacy, and we supply genuine KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution. You can see our full range on the Buy Mounjaro page.

06 · What to say to your GP

What to say to your GP to get Mounjaro

Be specific and factual. Give your height and weight, any weight-related conditions (such as high blood pressure or prediabetes), what you have already tried, and the question you want answered. A useful opening line is: "I'd like to discuss whether tirzepatide is suitable for me, either on the NHS or privately."

Bring a list of your current medicines and supplements, because a prescriber must check them before starting treatment.1 Ask directly where you stand against the NHS criteria. NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, though local access depends on the phased rollout.4

If the practice does not offer private prescribing, ask whether they will still keep your records up to date and monitor related conditions such as blood pressure while you use a private service.

07 · What a private route costs

What a private route costs and how to pay

With us, the pen price is the cost of the medicine, and the consultation is free with no hidden fees. The standard price of one 4-week pen is £169.99 at 2.5mg, £218.99 at 5mg, £279.99 at 7.5mg, £290.99 at 10mg, £319.99 at 12.5mg and £329.99 at 15mg. All six doses are in stock.

If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. A first year costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg. Those totals are before discounts: a new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less.

On payment plans, we accept Visa and Mastercard, Klarna and pay-monthly options. There are no subscriptions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping. You can explore other options on our weight loss treatments page.

08 · How ordering works

How ordering works in three steps

Ordering takes three steps. First, complete the free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Second, a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Third, our registered pharmacy dispenses your order, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm.

Delivery is free, next-day, tracked (DPD) and discreet, in temperature-controlled packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order, and ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and side-effect support are included. Our GPhC registration number is 9012878, which you can check on the GPhC register.

09 · What results to expect

What results to expect

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg.

These are trial averages, and individual results vary. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. A private prescription does not change what the medicine can do, and trial averages do not predict your own result.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can my GP give me a private prescription for Mounjaro?
Some can, but it depends on the practice. A GP is not obliged to offer private weight-management prescribing, and you would pay the full cost of the medicine plus any appointment fee. Ask your surgery directly. If they decline, a GPhC-registered online pharmacy with a prescriber review is a common alternative route.
Can you take a private prescription to an NHS pharmacy?
You can present one at a community pharmacy, but the pharmacy chooses whether to dispense it and you pay the full price. The £9.90 NHS prescription charge only covers NHS prescriptions. Check the pharmacy can supply your dose and compare prices first, as they vary between providers.
What to say to GP to get Mounjaro?
Give your height, weight, any weight-related conditions and what you have already tried, then ask whether tirzepatide is suitable on the NHS or privately. Bring a list of your current medicines. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.4
What are the payment plans available for Mounjaro in the UK?
With us you can pay by Visa or Mastercard, Klarna or pay-monthly options, and there are no subscriptions. Each 4-week pen is paid for per order, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping. New customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40.
Who cannot take Mounjaro?
Suitability is decided by a prescriber, who assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding.1 You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems.13 Be complete and honest on your consultation form so the prescriber can advise you safely. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.
What drugs cannot be taken with Mounjaro?
Tell your prescriber about every medicine you take. Mounjaro can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives because stomach emptying slows.7 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 If you take insulin or sulfonylureas, doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar. Your prescriber will review the full list for you.13
Can I drink alcohol or what should I avoid while taking Mounjaro?
Treatment is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 There is no direct interaction between Mounjaro and alcohol, but drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual. If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, alcohol increases the risk of low blood sugar. Report any new or troubling symptom through the Yellow Card scheme.19
What are the long-term effects of Mounjaro?
Your prescriber can discuss long-term safety with you based on the product information.1 Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system after a final dose. Report any side effect to your prescriber and via the Yellow Card scheme. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.19
