01 · Your options
Can you get appetite suppressants from your GP, or do you need to go private?
Your GP can consider prescribing licensed weight-management medicine, but whether they do depends on your assessment and on local NHS access. For Mounjaro, the NHS position is that it is available, with access phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46
Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.6 Neither route is wrong. The NHS route costs the standard prescription arrangements if you qualify, but you may wait. The private route is faster but you pay for the medicine.
| Question | NHS via your GP | Private online pharmacy |
|---|---|---|
| Who is considered first? | Highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions6 | Adults with BMI 30+, or BMI 27–30 with a weight-related condition1 |
| NICE recommendation | BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition4 | Follows the licence; a prescriber assesses suitability |
| Speed of access | Phased over several years | Online consultation, then prescriber review |
| Cost | NHS prescription charge £9.90 in England where payable | Your first 2.5mg pen £129.99 with code FIRST40; later orders £25 off standard price |
Whichever way you go, the medicine is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.1
02 · Going private
How the private route works if your GP cannot help yet
If NHS access is not available to you yet, our free online consultation is a regulated alternative. The consultation is free, and the price shown is the price paid. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews every order, not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order, and if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
Ordering takes three steps. First, complete the short health questionnaire, with no charge and no obligation. Second, the prescriber reviews it. Third, our registered pharmacy dispenses and ships: same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm, then free next-day tracked delivery in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99.
We supply genuine Mounjaro KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply, sourced directly from Eli Lilly, and all six doses are in stock. You can see current doses and prices on the Mounjaro pen product page, or read our guide to how to buy Mounjaro in the UK. Ongoing monthly clinical reviews are included, and repeat orders re-check suitability, so nothing ships automatically.
Payment is by Visa, Mastercard, Klarna or pay-monthly options, with no subscriptions. New customers save £40 on the first order at any dose, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25).
03 · Decide
What to settle before you decide
Decide three things before you choose a route. First, check your BMI and any weight-related conditions against the NHS and licensed criteria. Second, list your current medicines, since a prescriber will review them. Third, decide whether you can wait for NHS access or want to start sooner. You can also compare our guides on whether doctors can prescribe these medicines and asking a doctor for an appetite suppressant.
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.
04 · What Mounjaro actually is
Is Mounjaro an appetite suppressant?
Mounjaro is not a classic stimulant-style pill; it is a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine that reduces appetite as part of how it works. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen, the KwikPen, in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.
That matters when you talk to your doctor. Doctors tend to think in terms of licensed weight-management medicines and which ones suit a particular patient. Using the specific name, such as tirzepatide or Mounjaro, usually makes for a more useful conversation. If you are curious about the wider category, our guide on asking a doctor about GLP-1 weight-loss medicines covers it, and our overview of weight loss treatments lists the options we supply.
How it works
Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.
This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic). What the mechanism does tell you is that the medicine works with your body's own appetite signals rather than by simply stimulating you.
Why the mechanism matters for the GP conversation
When your doctor asks what you want from treatment, the honest answer is usually "help feeling less hungry so I can stick to a reduced-calorie diet". That is exactly the medicine's role: it supports diet and activity changes, it does not replace them. Doctors respond well to patients who understand this, because it shows you are prepared for treatment to be part of a broader plan.
How long it stays in your system
Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 This is a practical point to raise with a prescriber if you are thinking about starting, pausing or stopping, because it explains why effects and side effects do not vanish the day after an injection.
Beyond the label "suppressant"
It is worth separating the everyday phrase from the clinical reality. A medicine that slows stomach emptying and acts on two gut-hormone receptors is doing more than dulling hunger. It changes how quickly you feel full and how your body responds to insulin. This is why a prescriber will ask about your medical history and medicines, rather than simply handing over a pill for hunger. The assessment exists to check the treatment is suitable for you, and that it is used within its licence, with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity alongside it.
For readers who have already asked a doctor and been told no, understanding the medicine's real name and licence is often the first step to a better second conversation, whether with your own GP, a different practice, or a regulated private service.
05 · Who qualifies
Who qualifies for Mounjaro on the NHS, and who qualifies privately?
Eligibility differs between the NHS and the licence, and knowing both helps you understand what your GP is working to. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.4 The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.6
In plain terms, being recommended by NICE does not mean every eligible person can get a prescription tomorrow. The phased approach means your local practice may be working through a defined group first. Full rollout is expected to take years.
The licensed criteria
The licence is broader than the current NHS rollout stage. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Examples include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.111 It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
| Group | Criteria as stated |
|---|---|
| NHS primary-care rollout, first groups | Initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions6 |
| NICE recommendation | BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition4 |
| Licensed use (private prescribing) | BMI 30+, or BMI 27–30 with at least one weight-related condition1 |
What the assessment covers
A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether Mounjaro is suitable for you.1 Meeting a BMI threshold is therefore necessary but not sufficient. The prescriber still decides on suitability. That is true on the NHS and privately.
How to check where you stand
Work out your BMI from your current height and weight, then note any conditions on the licensed list: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. If your BMI is 30 or above you fall within the licence even without a condition. If it is between 27 and 30, you need at least one condition from that list. If you are at 35 or above with a condition, you match the NICE recommendation, though local NHS timing still depends on the phased rollout.
For a deeper look at this question from the prescribing side, see our guide on whether a GP can prescribe Mounjaro.
One practical note: if you are above the NHS stage your practice is currently working to, or below the NICE threshold but within the licence, a regulated private assessment may be the only route available to you at present. If you are within the NHS groups being prioritised, it is worth asking your GP first, because the NHS route may suit you.
06 · What to say to your doctor
How do you ask your doctor for weight loss medication?
Book a dedicated appointment, bring your numbers, and ask directly about licensed weight-management medicine. Doctors have short appointments, so preparation helps.
Before the appointment
- Work out your BMI from a recent height and weight.
- List any weight-related conditions you have been diagnosed with, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.1
- List every medicine you take, including over-the-counter products.
- Note what you have already tried with diet and activity, and what happened.
- Write down your questions so you do not forget them.
Words that help
Rather than asking for an "appetite suppressant", try a sentence like: "I would like to discuss whether a licensed weight-management medicine such as tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro, could be suitable for me." It tells your doctor you have done your homework and are asking for an assessment, not a prescription on demand. You might add: "I understand access on the NHS is being phased in. Could you tell me whether I meet the criteria locally, and what the next step would be?"
That last question matters. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is phased, with the highest-need groups first.6 Asking about local criteria gets you a concrete answer rather than a yes or no. Our guides on how to get your doctor to prescribe Mounjaro and asking your doctor to prescribe it go deeper on this.
Questions to ask during the appointment
- Do I meet the NHS criteria in this area right now?
- If not, is there a waiting list, a review date or a referral to a weight-management service?
- Is there anything in my health or medicines that would make this unsuitable?
- What support is available alongside medicine, including diet and activity guidance?
- If I choose a private provider, would you want to know?
Be honest about your history
A prescriber needs your full medical history and current medicines to decide whether Mounjaro is suitable.1 Leaving things out does not help you. If you take insulin or similar medicines, doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar, and the prescriber needs to know. If you use oral contraception, Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed, so ask what that means for you. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1
If you leave without a plan
If the appointment ends with "not at the moment", ask the doctor to note your request and your BMI in your record, ask when criteria might be reviewed, and ask whether a different clinician in the practice handles weight management. You can also request a longer appointment specifically for weight. If you decide not to wait, a regulated online pharmacy is an alternative, and our free consultation takes only a short health questionnaire.
07 · Why a GP may say no
Why won't my doctor prescribe me Mounjaro or weight loss medication?
The most common reason is that you do not yet fall within the groups the NHS is prioritising, rather than a judgement about you. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is phased in over several years, and the rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.6 If you sit outside that group right now, your doctor may be working to a rollout stage rather than saying you could never benefit.
Reasons that are about the rollout
NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.4 If your BMI is below that, the NHS recommendation does not currently cover you, even though the licence goes lower. Full rollout is expected to take years, so being told to wait is a realistic response, not a brush-off.
Reasons that are about suitability
A prescriber assesses BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether Mounjaro is suitable.1 A doctor may decide that another approach suits you better, or that a particular condition or medicine needs reviewing first. That is a clinical judgement. If you are unsure of the reason, ask for it plainly and ask what would change the answer.
Reasons that are about the request
Sometimes the conversation goes better with a specific request. A general request for "something to curb my appetite" is hard to act on. Asking about a named, licensed medicine and the local criteria gives the doctor something concrete to answer. Our page on the appetite suppressant prescription question covers how doctors approach this.
What you can do next
- Ask which criteria you did not meet and whether they might change.
- Ask for the decision and your BMI to be recorded in your notes.
- Ask about referral to a weight-management service, since NHS access to some treatments runs through specialist services.
- Ask for a review date so you are not left without a plan.
- Consider a regulated private assessment if you meet the licensed criteria and do not want to wait.
Being told no is not the end
A "no" from your GP today reflects today's criteria and today's capacity. The phased rollout means more people are expected to become eligible over time. In the meantime, your GP remains the right person to look after your wider health, so keep them informed even if you choose a private route. Mention any treatment you start so interactions and monitoring are not missed.
If you take the private route, the same principle applies: a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers, and if the medicine is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically. That safeguard is the point of a regulated service. It also means a private provider can say no, just as a GP can.
08 · Private cost over a year
What does private Mounjaro cost over a year?
Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99), and the cost then depends on the dose you settle at. Pen and year totals are at standard prices, before discounts. A new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less than the standard price (code DOSE25).
The first four pens
If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. Individual doses are priced at £169.99 for 2.5mg, £218.99 for 5mg, £279.99 for 7.5mg and £290.99 for 10mg per month, which works out at £42.50, £54.75, £70.00 and £72.75 per week respectively.
A first year
| Where you settle | First-year cost (52 weeks, 13 pens, standard prices) |
|---|---|
| 5mg maintenance | £2,711.88 |
| 15mg maintenance | up to £3,599.88 |
| 7.5mg, 10mg or 12.5mg | Monthly price of £279.99, £290.99 or £319.99 respectively |
A first year costs £2,711.88 if you settle at 5mg, up to £3,599.88 at 15mg. For other maintenance doses, use that dose's monthly price rather than a year figure. The 15mg pen is £329.99 per month at standard price, and a switching customer's first 15mg order is £289.99, a first-order price.
Many people settle at a maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg, but higher is not automatically better, and your prescriber guides the pace.1
How this compares with other pharmacies
Across the UK pharmacies we track, Mounjaro pens range from £143.96 to £339.00 per month depending on dose and provider (checked 12 October 2026). The cheapest and dearest 2.5mg starting pens we track run from £143.96 to £179.99, and the gap between providers for the same dose ranges from £27 to £41. Boots' Mounjaro dose prices run from £179.00 to £339.00.
What the price includes
The consultation is free and the price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order, and delivery is free next-day tracked in temperature-controlled packaging. Ongoing monthly clinical reviews are included. You can see current prices on the Mounjaro pen product page, updated as of October 2026.
Payment is by Visa, Mastercard, Klarna or pay-monthly options, and there are no subscriptions, so you are not locked in.
09 · Dose, pace and results
How does treatment progress, and how much weight can you lose?
Treatment starts low and builds gradually, and trial results are averages, not predictions for you. Everyone starts Mounjaro on 2.5mg once a week. This starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not about weight loss itself. After at least 4 weeks the dose increases to 5mg, and can then step up by 2.5mg at a minimum of 4-week intervals (7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg) up to a maximum of 15mg weekly, depending on how you respond and tolerate it.1
What the main trial found
In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages. Individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.
At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2
As a worked example, for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. That is simple arithmetic on the trial average, not a forecast of what you will lose or how quickly.
Realistic pace
Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest. Most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month. Trials measured results at 72 weeks, so think in months, not days, and judge progress by trend, not individual weigh-ins.1
The first weeks
Experiences differ widely in the 2.5mg weeks. Some people notice appetite change and early loss in week one, while others feel little until a higher dose, and both are normal. Early loss includes water weight, so the trend over weeks matters more than any single weigh-in. Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle.1
When progress is reviewed
Treatment response is reviewed by your prescriber. If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.1 This review is a normal part of treatment, not a failure.
Why the ladder matters for your expectations
Because higher is not automatically better, some people stay at a lower maintenance dose that works for them. A slower pace does not mean the treatment is failing; it means the plan is being fitted to you. If you are comparing what to expect with other medicines, remember that only specific head-to-head trials support direct comparisons, so be cautious about setting different trials' numbers side by side.
10 · Using it safely
How do you inject, store and travel with Mounjaro safely?
Mounjaro is injected under the skin once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food. Licensed injection sites are the stomach area (at least 5cm from the belly button), the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm if someone else gives the injection. Rotate the site with each dose. Each KwikPen contains four weekly doses.113
Timing and the pen dial
There is no "best" time of day. Mounjaro works the same morning or evening, with or without food. What matters is the same day each week. Many people choose a weekend morning so early side effects fall on days off. The pen is set by turning the dose knob until the dose indicator shows the correct dose in the window. Follow the pen's instructions for the injection itself.
Missed doses and changing day
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time, then carry on with your usual day. If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose entirely and take the next one on your normal day. Never take two doses within 3 days of each other.1 You can change your weekly injection day if needed, as long as at least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since your last dose.
Storage
Keep Mounjaro pens in a fridge at 2–8°C and never freeze them. Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge not above 30°C for up to 30 days, which is useful for short trips, after which it should be discarded. Keep the pen cap on to protect it from light, and never use a pen that has been frozen.1
Travelling
You can fly with Mounjaro. Carry pens in hand luggage, because hold luggage can fall below freezing, ideally in a cool bag with the prescription label or a copy of your prescription. In-use pens tolerate up to 30 days not above 30°C, so most holidays need no special arrangements; for hot climates use an insulated pouch. Check destination rules for travelling with prescription injectables before you fly. Unopened pens should be kept in the fridge and keep until the expiry date printed on the box. If an unopened pen has been out of the fridge, check with the pharmacy before using it rather than relying on a remembered day limit, since figures circulating online often come from other countries' labels.113
Reporting side effects
If you notice a new symptom, discuss it with your prescriber. You can also report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 Our team offers side-effect support, and the prescribing team carries out ongoing reviews.
11 · Staying safe when buying
How do you make sure a weight-loss medicine is genuine and legitimate?
Use a registered pharmacy that supplies only after a consultation reviewed by a prescriber, and check the register. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, so any seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription is a warning sign. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting problems.7
Check the pharmacy
UK pharmacies are listed on the GPhC public register.12 EverydayMeds is a GPhC-registered UK online pharmacy, registration 9012878, and you can check it at the GPhC register entry. Registration tells you the pharmacy is regulated; it does not replace your own judgement, so also look at how the service works.
What a legitimate service looks like
- A consultation with a health questionnaire, reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.
- Clear statement that it is a prescription-only medicine.
- A refund route if your order is declined as unsuitable.
- Support contacts you can actually reach.
- Genuine branded pens sourced from the manufacturer's supply chain.
Our own supply is official LillyDirect supply, meaning Mounjaro direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, with genuine KwikPens and all six doses stocked from 2.5mg to 15mg. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
Red flags
- Sellers offering to supply without a consultation or prescription.
- Dramatic weight-loss claims or promises of specific results.
- Pens with no packaging, no label or no pharmacy details.
- Pressure to buy quickly or pay by unusual methods.
- "Natural" products marketed as a substitute for prescription medicine. Low-cost supplements are available cheaply without assessment and carry no clinical oversight, so they are not an equivalent to a licensed medicine.
After your order arrives
Pens arrive by free next-day tracked delivery in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging. Check the packaging is intact and store pens in the fridge promptly. If an item is faulty, damaged or wrong, contact us within 3 days, because dispensed prescription medicines cannot be returned otherwise. Refunds take 5–10 working days.
Support
Our support team is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, through the account portal chat, or by phone on 0333 207 0413. We also offer GLPTrackr, a free companion app for tracking your GLP-1 journey on iOS and Android. Over 100,000 customers have been supported on their weight loss journey with us, which describes how many people we have served, not how any individual will respond.
If you want to start, begin with the free online consultation, or see the Mounjaro buying guide for the full ordering process.
12 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
How ordering works
How ordering works at EverydayMeds
Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.
Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes
Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.
Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day
A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.
Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery
Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.
Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.
Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.
