01 · The short answer

Can a pharmacy prescribe Mounjaro? Yes, privately

A pharmacy can prescribe Mounjaro privately when a registered prescriber has assessed you and decided it is appropriate. The prescriber, not the shop, makes the clinical decision. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.¹

In practice, two separate things happen. First, a prescriber reviews your health information and decides whether treatment is suitable. Second, a registered pharmacy dispenses the medicine against that prescription. In an online pharmacy like ours, both steps sit inside one service, so you do not need to take a paper prescription anywhere.

What a pharmacy cannot do is sell Mounjaro simply because you ask for it. A high street counter without a prescription cannot hand it over, and a website that offers to supply without a consultation or prescription is not operating legitimately.

04 · Who qualifies

Who qualifies for a Mounjaro prescription

You qualify for private prescribing if you meet the licensed criteria and the prescriber judges it safe for you. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Examples include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.¹

It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. It is not a replacement for either.¹

Meeting the BMI threshold is only the starting point. A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether Mounjaro is suitable for you.¹¹ That is why the consultation matters, and why a pharmacy that skips it should worry you.

Be prepared to give accurate answers about your health, including any other medicines you take. The prescriber can only make a safe decision with accurate information.

05 · Pharmacy vs GP vs NHS

Pharmacy, GP and NHS: where each fits

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.⁴⁶ Full rollout is expected to take years.

That is why the NHS criteria are narrower than the licence. A person with a BMI of 32 may be eligible for the licensed medicine privately but is not among the first groups the NHS is treating. Private prescribing is a way to access treatment sooner if you meet the licensed criteria and choose to pay.

06 · What Mounjaro is

What is Mounjaro (tirzepatide)?

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.¹

Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.¹

This dual action distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic).¹ Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.¹

Because it is a prescribed medicine with a dose ladder, a prescriber decides your starting strength and follows your progress. A pharmacy that simply posts a pen without that oversight is not offering the same service.

07 · What results to expect

What results to expect from treatment

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.²

These are trial averages, and individual results vary. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. To make the percentage concrete: for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg.²

At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.²

08 · Choosing a safe pharmacy

How to check a pharmacy is legitimate

Check the pharmacy is on the GPhC register before you enter any health or payment details. The General Pharmaceutical Council publishes a public register of pharmacies and pharmacy professionals, and every legitimate UK online pharmacy has a registration number you can look up.¹² Ours is GPhC 9012878, and you can verify it on the register.

Watch for these warning signs:

• An offer to supply Mounjaro without a consultation or prescription.
• No visible GPhC registration number, or one that does not match the register.
• Social media sellers, or anyone who promises specific results.
• Pens that are not supplied through a recognised distribution route.

The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme.⁷ If you think you have had a side effect, or have a suspicious product, you can report it through the Yellow Card scheme.¹⁹

09 · Before you start

What to prepare before your consultation

A little preparation makes the consultation quicker and the prescriber's decision safer. Have these ready:

• Your current height and weight, so your BMI is accurate.
• A list of every medicine you take, including over-the-counter products.
• Any conditions you have, especially those linked to weight such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea or prediabetes.
• Any previous weight-loss treatment, including other injections.

If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, tell the prescriber, as doses of those medicines may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar. If you use an oral contraceptive, say so too: Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed.⁷ The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.¹
