A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro is licensed for weight management and type 2 diabetes, not for asthma, so it should never replace your inhalers or asthma plan.
  • Always tell the prescriber about your asthma and list every inhaler and tablet you use before treatment starts.
  • New or worsening wheeze, cough or breathlessness after starting treatment needs medical help straight away, not a wait-and-see approach.
  • Severe breathlessness is an emergency: use your reliever as directed and call emergency services.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Can you take Mounjaro with asthma?

Having asthma does not automatically rule Mounjaro out, but the decision belongs to a prescriber who knows your history.

Every order starts with a free online consultation, reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Be specific about your asthma: how well controlled it feels, which inhalers you use, whether you take oral steroids or other tablets, and whether anything has changed recently. If your asthma is poorly controlled or changing, say so, because your prescriber may prefer your GP or asthma nurse to address that first.

02 · What to do next

The decisions you are actually facing

Most readers are weighing up one of three things. Each has a different sensible next step.

  • You have asthma and are thinking of starting Mounjaro. Complete the consultation honestly, list your inhalers, and ask the prescriber how to monitor your breathing in the early weeks.
  • You already take Mounjaro and your breathing has changed. Do not assume the cause. Get medical help straight away if the breathing change is new or worsening, and report it through the Yellow Card scheme19.
  • You hope Mounjaro will treat your asthma. It is not licensed for that. Our guide to asthma and weight loss medication explains how the two topics fit together.

If you are ready to see whether treatment is suitable, you can start with the Mounjaro pen consultation. The consultation itself is free and carries no obligation.

03 · What Mounjaro is licensed for

What Mounjaro is licensed for

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes1. Asthma is not among its licensed uses.

It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg1. Treatment is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone2. These are trial averages, and individual results vary.

04 · Weight, breathing and the research

Weight, breathing and the research headlines

You may have seen news stories about GLP-1 medicines and asthma in people living with obesity. But a headline is not the same as a licensed use, and it is not a promise about your own asthma.

Tirzepatide activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties1. Our explainer on GLP-1 medicines and asthma has more.

Be wary of any seller who promises that an injection will cure or reverse asthma. That kind of claim is a warning sign, and a regulated pharmacy will not make it.

05 · Breathlessness after starting

Can Mounjaro cause shortness of breath?

The UK patient leaflet lists breathing problems, rapid swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or a fast heartbeat as signs of a severe allergic reaction (rare): get medical help straight away. Tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom.

Breathlessness has many possible causes, and starting any new treatment is a reasonable moment to have it checked. If you notice new wheeze, a cough that will not settle, chest tightness or breathlessness that is out of character, get medical help straight away. Describe when it began relative to your doses and whether your reliever inhaler helps.

You can also report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme19. Reports help regulators spot patterns that individual patients cannot see.

Severe breathlessness, difficulty speaking in full sentences, blue lips or a reliever that is not helping are emergencies. Follow your personal asthma action plan and call emergency services. Do not wait for a pharmacy or clinic reply.

06 · Telling asthma from other causes

Asthma, being unfit and other explanations

Wheeze, cough, chest tightness and breathlessness can come from several conditions, and being out of condition can look similar. Diagnosis is made by a GP or asthma clinic using history and breathing tests.

If you are carrying extra weight and get breathless on exertion, do not self-diagnose either way. Ask your GP to assess it. This matters before weight-loss treatment too, because a clear picture of your baseline breathing makes it much easier to judge any change later.

Undiagnosed asthma may feel like recurring chest tightness, a persistent night-time cough or breathlessness that comes and goes. Get medical help straight away for chest tightness, and book a GP appointment for any ongoing symptoms, with or without Mounjaro.

07 · Asthma medicines and weight

Asthma medicines, weight gain and losing weight safely

People often ask which asthma medicines to avoid or which can help with weight loss. Which asthma medicines suit you is a decision for your GP, asthma nurse or pharmacist.

Never stop or reduce a preventer or reliever inhaler to make a weight-loss plan simpler. No asthma medicine is a weight-loss drug, and our page on an asthma drug for weight loss explains why that distinction matters.

Losing weight with asthma follows the same principles as for anyone: a reduced-calorie diet, more physical activity built up gradually, and clinical support. Exercise-triggered symptoms are common, so agree with your asthma team how to use your reliever before activity and how to build up safely.

When you apply for treatment, give your prescriber the full list of everything you take. That includes inhalers, tablets, nasal sprays, over-the-counter products and supplements.

08 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

09 · Who can get Mounjaro

NHS and private access

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions)46. Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

If you go private, choose a pharmacy that checks suitability properly. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. We supply genuine KwikPens via official LillyDirect supply, and ongoing monthly reviews are included.

Those reviews are the right place to raise how your asthma is doing. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and nothing ships automatically. You can read more about our approach on the weight loss clinic page. If you want to compare the broader picture first, see taking Mounjaro if you have asthma.

How ordering works

How ordering works at EverydayMeds

Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.

  1. EverydayMeds online consultation on a mobile phone

  2. A clinician ready to review an online consultation

Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day

  3. An EverydayMeds delivery box

    Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.

Start your free consultation

Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can asthmatics take Mounjaro?
Asthma does not automatically exclude someone, but it must be assessed individually. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management and type 2 diabetes, not asthma. Tell the prescriber about your asthma, your inhalers and any recent changes in control during your consultation, and keep using your prescribed asthma medicines exactly as directed.
Can Mounjaro affect asthma?
It is not licensed as an asthma treatment. If your breathing changes after starting, get medical help straight away and consider reporting it through the Yellow Card scheme.
Can Mounjaro cause shortness of breath?
The UK patient leaflet lists breathing problems, with rapid swelling of the lips, tongue or throat or a fast heartbeat, as signs of a rare severe allergic reaction: get medical help straight away. Tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom. Any new or unexplained breathlessness needs medical help straight away, and severe breathlessness is an emergency: call 999.
Who should not take Mounjaro?
You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation.
Should I stop my inhaler if I start Mounjaro?
No. Keep using your preventer and reliever inhalers exactly as prescribed. Mounjaro is not an asthma treatment and does not replace them. Any change to your asthma medicines should only be made by your GP, asthma nurse or prescriber, based on how well controlled your asthma is.
What is a red flag for asthma?
Warning signs include breathlessness that stops you speaking in full sentences, a reliever inhaler that is not helping, blue lips, or symptoms rapidly worsening. These are emergencies: follow your asthma action plan and call emergency services. Ongoing night-time cough or tightness should also prompt a GP appointment.
How do I lose weight if I have asthma?
Use the same foundations as anyone: a reduced-calorie diet, gradually increased physical activity and clinical support. Agree with your asthma team how to manage exercise-triggered symptoms. If you qualify, a licensed medicine such as Mounjaro can be used alongside those measures, after a prescriber reviews your asthma history.
Why did I suddenly develop asthma?
A sudden change in breathing can have many causes. Asthma can begin in adulthood, and breathlessness can also come from other conditions. See your GP for assessment and breathing tests rather than assuming a cause, especially if you have recently started a new medicine.
