A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Having no gallbladder is a question for your prescriber to weigh, alongside your full history, rather than a simple yes or no.
  • Mounjaro slows how quickly the stomach empties, which is worth mentioning if you already have digestive symptoms after surgery.
  • Gallstones and gallbladder inflammation are listed side effects of Mounjaro.
  • Upper right abdominal pain, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes needs medical help straight away.
  • Tell the prescriber why and when your gallbladder was removed, and about any current symptoms.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Can you take Mounjaro without a gallbladder?

You may be able to, but suitability is individual. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, and your prescriber takes extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of gallbladder problems.13 Having had the organ removed is part of that history, so it needs to be declared.

02 · Your next step

What should you do next?

Be specific in your consultation. Say when the surgery happened, what it was for, and whether you have symptoms now. Our free consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and orders that turn out to be unsuitable are refunded automatically.

For broader context, see our weight loss clinic.

03 · Gallbladder side effects

Gallstones and gallbladder inflammation on Mounjaro

Gallbladder events are a recognised part of the safety picture. Gallstones (cholelithiasis) are a common side effect in the weight-management trials, affecting between 1 in 100 and 1 in 10 people. Acute gallbladder problems were linked to the amount of weight lost. Inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis) was uncommon in the weight-management trials, affecting between 1 in 1,000 and 1 in 100 people.1

Raise this with your prescriber, who can explain how your surgery affects your assessment. Our guides on GLP-1 medicines and the gallbladder and side effects without a gallbladder go further.

04 · Digestion and stomach emptying

How Mounjaro affects digestion

Tirzepatide activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which helps regulate appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties.1 Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.

If you already have digestive symptoms after surgery, mention them. Severe vomiting or diarrhoea can cause dehydration, which can strain the kidneys, so keep fluids up and get medical help straight away if you cannot keep fluids down. A GP or dietitian is the right person for advice on what to eat or avoid after gallbladder removal.

05 · Warning signs

When to seek urgent help

Seek immediate medical help for pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes, which can signal gallbladder problems.13 Severe, persistent stomach pain that spreads to your back, with or without vomiting, may be pancreatitis and also needs medical help straight away. Seek immediate medical help for signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.

You can report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 See also our overview of how Mounjaro works without a gallbladder.

06 · Alternatives and comparisons

Other options if Mounjaro is not suitable

If your prescriber advises against Mounjaro, other routes exist. Read about weight loss medication without a gallbladder, other GLP-1 medicines, or how the options compare. Each medicine has its own safety profile, so ask your prescriber before switching.

How ordering works

How ordering works at EverydayMeds

Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.

  1. EverydayMeds online consultation on a mobile phone

    Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes

Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.

  2. A clinician ready to review an online consultation

Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day

A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.

  3. An EverydayMeds delivery box

    Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.

Start your free consultation

Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.

Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can I take Mounjaro if I have no gallbladder?
Possibly. Share when and why you had surgery in your consultation, and the prescriber will decide whether treatment is appropriate for you.
Is it safe to take tirzepatide without a gallbladder?
Safety is judged individually. Gallstones and gallbladder inflammation are listed side effects of Mounjaro. Your prescriber reviews your history, symptoms and other medicines before deciding.
Can you take weight loss drugs if you have no gallbladder?
Each medicine has its own cautions, and your prescriber assesses them individually. Your prescriber or GP can explain which options fit your surgical history and current digestion.
Is it harder to lose weight with no gallbladder?
Ask your prescriber how your surgical history affects your treatment; Mounjaro works through gut-hormone receptors that help regulate appetite, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. Individual results vary.
What to avoid with no gallbladder?
Dietary advice after gallbladder removal is best given by your GP or a dietitian, as it depends on how you tolerate food. If you take Mounjaro, tell them, because the medicine slows how quickly the stomach empties.
Do I need to tell the prescriber about my surgery?
Yes. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation, including gallbladder surgery, pancreatitis or digestive disease. Our consultation is free and reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, who can decline treatment if it is unsuitable.
Can you take Mounjaro with gallbladder problems?
Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of gallbladder problems. If you develop upper right abdominal pain, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes while on treatment, get medical help straight away.
