Can I Take Mounjaro for 3 Months Then Stop? (October 2026)

Yes, you can stop Mounjaro after 3 months, but three months is usually too early to see the full effect, and weight tends to return once treatment ends. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year.14 Stop with your prescriber, not on your own. Prices checked 11 October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • You can stop at any point, but stopping should be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits already in place.
  • After 36 weeks of treatment, people in SURMOUNT-4 who stopped regained on average 14% of body weight over the next year; those who continued lost a further 5.5%.
  • At 3 months most people are still on lower doses, so a sensible expectation is mid single-digit percentage loss, with wide variation.
  • Tirzepatide takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear after the last dose, and nothing needs doing while it does.
In this guide

01 · The honest answer

Can you take Mounjaro for 3 months and then stop?

Yes, nothing forces you to continue. Mounjaro is a once-weekly prescription medicine, and you can stop whenever you and your prescriber agree it is right. The more useful question is what you want those three months to achieve, because the evidence suggests three months is a short window for a medicine tested over 72 weeks.2

Mounjaro manages weight; it does not cure the biology behind it. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued lost a further 5.5% on average.14 That trial stopped treatment later than three months, but the direction of travel is the point: the medicine works while you take it, and stopping should always be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load.14

Our guide to taking Mounjaro for just 3 months goes into the short-course question from another angle.

If you stop after...What to expectWhat to do
1 month (still on 2.5mg)The 2.5mg weeks are an adjustment phase; losses are usually modest and some people feel little until a higher dose.2Speak to your prescriber before stopping; you may not yet have reached a dose that works for you.
2 monthsMost measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, so you may only just be reaching it.Review progress by trend, not single weigh-ins, and discuss the next step.
3 monthsMid single digits as a percentage of body weight is a sensible expectation on a standard titration, with wide individual variation.Decide with your prescriber between continuing, adjusting the dose or a planned exit.

02 · Planning the cost

What a short course costs compared with continuing

A three-month course covers roughly the first three pens of the dose ladder, and the 2.5mg pen is a starter dose. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99). The Mounjaro pen at 5mg is £218.99 at the standard price and 7.5mg is £279.99.

If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. A new customer's first order is £40 less with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25). If you continue for a full year, a first year costs £2,711.88 if you settle at 5mg, up to £3,599.88 at 15mg, before discounts.

03 · Your next step

Deciding whether three months is right for you

Three questions help: what is your goal, what happens afterwards, and what support do you have? If the goal is a quick, one-off drop for an event, the evidence on stopping suggests the result may not last. If the goal is lasting health change, three months works best as the start of a longer plan, not the whole plan.

Our free consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, so you can start your free consultation and talk through duration and exit planning before committing. Ongoing monthly clinical reviews are included, and the same team can help you plan a stop when the time comes. You can also see all weight loss treatments if you are comparing options.

04 · After the last dose

What happens in your body after the last dose

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system.1 There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears. That timing explains why the effects of stopping are gradual rather than sudden: for the first weeks you still have some medicine on board, and the change comes as levels fall.

Tirzepatide works by activating two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet. When the medicine clears, that support goes with it, so the habits you built during treatment become the main thing holding your progress in place.

This is why planning matters more than the stop date itself. If you have been relying on feeling full after small portions, you will need a structure to replace that: planned meals, protein at each meal, regular movement and an honest check on portion drift.

What about a one-month or three-week break?

Many people reading this have not planned a stop; they have simply missed pens, perhaps because of travel, illness or a delay. Clearance takes about 4–5 weeks, so a gap of a month or more means the medicine has largely left your system. The safe step is to contact your prescriber before your next injection, tell them how long the gap was and let them decide the dose to restart on. Do not simply resume at the dose you were on before without that advice.

For a single missed dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time; if more than 4 days have passed, skip it and take the next one on your normal day, and never take two doses within 3 days of each other.13 If you are an existing customer, our support team is available Monday–Friday 9am–5pm on 0333 207 0413 or at support@everydaymeds.co.uk.

Withdrawal symptoms

People often ask whether Mounjaro causes withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal symptoms are not listed as a side effect in the Mounjaro patient leaflet. What you may notice, as medicine levels fall, is a change in appetite, because the appetite-regulating action is wearing off. If you feel unwell after stopping, or notice any new symptom, speak to your prescriber and consider reporting it through the Yellow Card scheme.19

05 · What 3 months looks like

What results to expect after 3 months on Mounjaro

Three months in, most people are still on the lower rungs of the dose ladder, so trial-average losses at this stage are modest compared with the headline figures. In SURMOUNT-1, average weight loss built month by month, with the full 15–21% averages measured at 72 weeks, not 12.2 A sensible 3-month expectation on a standard titration is mid single digits as a percentage of body weight, with wide individual variation. Slower early progress does not predict failure, because the dose you respond to may still be ahead of you.

The headline trial figures are worth knowing so you can see how far three months sits from them. In SURMOUNT-1, which included 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages and individual results vary. As a worked example, for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. That is a 72-week result, not a 3-month one.

The pace is gradual by design

Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest; most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month. Trials measured results at 72 weeks, so think in months, not days, and judge progress by trend, not individual weigh-ins.2

Experiences in the first weeks differ widely. Some people notice appetite change and early loss in week one, while others feel little until a higher dose, and both are normal. Early loss includes water weight, so the trend over weeks matters more than any single weigh-in. Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle.13

Plateaus before the three-month mark

Weight loss is not linear. Plateaus of a few weeks are normal as the body adapts to a lower weight. Within the licence, the responses are to review food intake honestly, since portions drift back up, to protect protein and activity, to check the basics such as sleep and alcohol, and to discuss with your prescriber whether a dose step-up is appropriate if you are not yet at maximum. A plateau is not a reason to double doses or add unlicensed products.

If you want a fuller picture of what people typically see, our Mounjaro weight loss at 3 months guide goes deeper, and the one-month before and after guide covers the very first stage.

06 · Evidence on stopping

What the evidence says about stopping Mounjaro

SURMOUNT-4 looked at what happens after stopping. People who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average.14 This is a trial average, so individual results vary, and it describes people who had already been treated for 36 weeks, not 12.

What does this tell you about a three-month stop? Honestly, it tells you about direction, not an exact number. Mounjaro manages weight; it does not cure the biology behind it. If the biology is still the same when the medicine leaves, appetite regulation returns to what it was before.

Has anyone kept the weight off?

Some people do keep weight off, and the trial figures are averages, which means some people regained less than 14% and some more. The averages cannot tell you which group you will fall into. What the evidence does support is that exercise protects against regain if you later stop treatment, and that stopping works best when it is planned, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load.14 The habits you build during treatment are the part you keep.

Why the three-month window is hard to judge

There are two separate issues. First, you are still early on the dose ladder at three months, so you may be stopping before the dose that works best for you. Second, any weight you have lost has had little time to settle into a new routine. Both argue for talking to a prescriber before treating the three-month mark as an endpoint. If you are weighing a short course, our guides to taking Mounjaro for 3 months only and using it for 3 months cover similar ground.

Benefits beyond the scales

In trials, weight loss on tirzepatide came with average improvements in waist size, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood-sugar measures, and most participants with prediabetes returned to normal blood-sugar levels.2 These are trial-average secondary outcomes, not promises, but they are why prescribers talk about weight management as health management rather than appearance. If you stop, ask your prescriber how to monitor these measures too, not just your weight.

07 · Planning a stop

How to plan stopping Mounjaro with your prescriber

The safest way to stop is to plan it with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load.14 Treat the conversation as a review rather than an exit interview: your prescriber can look at your progress, your dose, your side effects and your goals, then recommend whether to continue, adjust or stop.

Step 1: book the review before you stop

Ongoing monthly clinical reviews are part of our service, and repeat orders re-check suitability, with no auto-shipping, so you are never locked into continuing. Tell the prescriber you are considering stopping and why. If the reason is cost, side effects, a health change or simply feeling you have done enough, each leads to a different plan.

Step 2: understand your options within the licence

Stopping altogether is one option; staying on a lower weekly dose is another. Your prescriber will tell you which suits your situation.

Step 3: build the habits that replace appetite support

Increased physical activity is part of the licence, not an optional extra. Nothing special is required: the evidence-backed pattern is regular moderate activity, such as brisk walking, plus resistance work for muscle. Start where you are and build; on injection days with early side effects, lighter movement still counts. Exercise also protects against regain if you later stop treatment.

On the food side, the same principles that help during a plateau help after stopping: review your intake honestly because portions drift back up, protect protein, and check sleep and alcohol. Because you will no longer have the medicine making you feel full sooner, planned meals tend to help more than relying on appetite cues. You may find our guide to losing belly fat in 3 months a useful practical companion.

Step 4: track what happens

Weigh yourself at a consistent frequency, note your waist, and record how appetite changes in the weeks after the last dose. Because clearance takes roughly 4–5 weeks, give it that long before drawing conclusions. The free GLPTrackr companion app (iOS and Android) can help you keep a record to share with your prescriber.

Step 5: know when to get in touch

If weight returns faster than you expected, or you feel unwell, contact your prescriber rather than waiting. Restarting is a clinical decision, not something to do on your own with leftover pens.

08 · Stretching and shortcuts

Keep to the weekly schedule

Mounjaro is licensed as a once-weekly medicine; its blood levels are designed around a 7-day cycle.

Other things not to do

Do not double doses to make up for missed weeks, and do not add unlicensed products in the hope of keeping weight off. A plateau, or weight creeping back after a break, is a reason to speak to your prescriber, not to improvise. Do not use leftover pens from a previous order without clinical advice, particularly after a gap of several weeks, as your prescriber needs to decide the dose you restart on.

Pen storage if you are pausing

If you have pens left over during a pause, the key facts are about storage. Unopened pens are stored in the fridge until first use and keep until the printed expiry date. Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away. Do not use a pen that has been above 30°C or has been frozen. For anything beyond this, such as an unopened pen left out of the fridge, check the patient information leaflet and ask the pharmacy before using it.13

Counterfeit and unregulated supply

If you stop and later want to restart, avoid sellers offering to supply without a consultation or prescription. Counterfeit medicine alerts are published by the MHRA, and suspected side effects or fake products can be reported through the Yellow Card scheme.7 Our Mounjaro comes through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, as genuine KwikPens.

09 · Who it is for

Who Mounjaro is for, and NHS versus private access

Understanding who the medicine is licensed for helps you judge whether a short course makes sense. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable for you.

The licence frames Mounjaro as a treatment used alongside lifestyle change, which is relevant to short courses. It is not designed as a quick-fix diet. For many people the condition it treats is long-term, which is why prescribers tend to discuss duration at the start.

NHS access

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

If you are on the NHS, talk to your NHS clinician before stopping, because your plan may include structured support. The NHS guide to tirzepatide is a good starting point.5 If you are private, the same principle applies: stopping is a conversation with your prescriber.

If you have a pre-existing condition

If you have type 2 diabetes or take other medicines, speak to your prescriber before stopping. For medicines such as insulin or sulfonylureas, doses may need adjusting because of low blood sugar risk, and the same prescriber review applies when treatment changes. Do not change other medicines yourself.

Oral contraception

Mounjaro can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives because stomach emptying slows. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 If you are on the pill, this applies to you; ask your prescriber about contraception while taking Mounjaro.7

10 · Side effects and stopping

Stopping because of side effects

Some people consider stopping at two or three months because of side effects rather than by choice. In SURMOUNT-1, 4.3% of people on 5mg, 7.1% on 10mg and 6.2% on 15mg stopped treatment because of side effects, compared with 2.6% on placebo.2 That tells you stopping for this reason is not unusual, and it is a legitimate reason.

The commonest early effects are mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection, and they usually settle.13 If yours are not settling, or are severe, contact your prescriber before the next dose. They may recommend staying on a lower dose for longer, which is a licensed option, rather than stopping entirely.

Reporting side effects

If you experience a side effect, you can report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 This applies to new symptoms that appear after you stop, too.

When three months is simply too soon to judge

If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.2 That is the formal checkpoint, and it falls after the three-month mark. If you are at three months and still on a lower dose, you have not yet reached it. Slower early progress does not predict failure.

If it is not working after a restart

If you restarted after a break and results feel slower, consider the usual causes: you may be back on a lower dose while titrating up again, intake may have drifted, and plateaus of a few weeks are normal. Review food intake honestly, protect protein and activity, check sleep and alcohol, and ask your prescriber whether a step-up is appropriate. Do not double doses or add unlicensed products.

Mood and wellbeing

Regulators have looked specifically at whether GLP-1 medicines are linked to low mood or suicidal thoughts: the EMA's safety committee reviewed the evidence and concluded in 2024 that it does not support a causal link, and the MHRA keeps this under continuous review.17 Any big change in weight, appetite and routine can affect how you feel, so tell your prescriber about any history of depression, and seek help promptly if your mood drops or you have distressing thoughts during treatment.

If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. Tell your prescriber about any change in your mood while taking Mounjaro.

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

12 · Ordering with us

How ordering works if you start, pause or restart

If you decide a trial of treatment is right, ordering is straightforward and carries no lock-in. EverydayMeds is a GPhC-registered UK online pharmacy (registration 9012878), and there are no subscriptions, so you are never committed to continuing.

The three steps

First, complete the free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Second, a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it, not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Third, our registered pharmacy dispenses and dispatches your order, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm, and delivery is free next-day tracked (DPD, temperature-controlled packaging, discreet).

You can begin at the free consultation page, and see current Mounjaro pen prices and availability there. All six doses (2.5–15mg) are in stock.

What the price includes

The consultation is free, and the price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance are included with every order. New customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40, and this applies at any dose, including if you are switching to us from another provider. An automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25). Payment options include Visa, Mastercard, Klarna and pay-monthly options.

Restarting after a break

If you paused and want to restart, your repeat order re-checks suitability and the prescriber decides your dose; nothing ships automatically. This is helpful if you have had a gap of several weeks, because the right restart dose is a clinical judgement. Switching at 15mg? Your first order is £289.99, but your prescriber will confirm whether that dose is appropriate for you after any break.

Support

Our team is available Monday–Friday 9am–5pm by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, via account portal chat or on 0333 207 0413. Aftercare includes ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team, and side-effect support. Over 100,000 customers have been supported on their weight loss journey with us. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity; individual results vary, and this page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can you take Mounjaro for just a few months?
Yes, you can take Mounjaro for a few months and then stop, because treatment duration is agreed between you and your prescriber. The caveat is that trial results were measured at 72 weeks, and at three months most people are still on lower doses with modest losses. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year. Plan any stop with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits already in place.
Has anyone kept the weight off after stopping Mounjaro?
Some people do, but the trial evidence shows regain is the average outcome. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued lost a further 5.5%. An average hides individual differences, and individual results vary. Planned stopping, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load, and regular exercise, which protects against regain, give you the best chance of holding progress.
What are the typical results I can expect after 3 months on Mounjaro?
A sensible 3-month expectation on a standard titration is mid single digits as a percentage of body weight, with wide individual variation. Most people are still on the lower rungs of the dose ladder, and the full 15–21% averages in SURMOUNT-1 were measured at 72 weeks, not 12. The first 2.5mg weeks are an adjustment phase, and most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward. Slower early progress does not predict failure, and trial averages do not predict your own result.
What happens if I stop taking Mounjaro for 3 weeks?
Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days and takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear, so after three weeks some medicine may still be in your system, but levels are falling. Do not double up to make up for missed doses.
Can I stop taking Mounjaro after 2 months?
Yes, you can stop at any point, but two months usually means you are only just reaching the doses where most measurable progress builds, from 5mg onward. The 2.5mg weeks are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest. Judge progress by trend rather than single weigh-ins, and speak to your prescriber before deciding. They can discuss continuing, adjusting the dose or a planned exit, with diet and activity support in place if you stop.
Is it safe to restart Mounjaro after a month-long break?
Restarting is a decision for your prescriber, not something to do by resuming at your old dose. Tirzepatide takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear, so after a month-long gap the medicine has largely left your system. Contact your prescriber, tell them how long you were off and any side effects, and let them decide the dose you restart on. Repeat orders with us re-check suitability, and nothing ships automatically.
Does Mounjaro cause withdrawal symptoms?
Withdrawal symptoms are not listed as a side effect in the Mounjaro patient leaflet. What changes after stopping is that the appetite-regulating action fades as the medicine clears over roughly 4–5 weeks. If you feel unwell or notice any new symptom after stopping, speak to your prescriber and consider reporting it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme. Do not self-treat or restart without advice.
I missed 3 weeks of Mounjaro. What should I do?
Contact your prescriber before your next injection rather than guessing. Tell them how many weeks you missed, what dose you were on and whether you had side effects. If more than 4 days have passed since a missed dose, skip it rather than catching up, and never take two doses within 3 days of each other. Our support team can help existing customers on 0333 207 0413 or at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, Monday–Friday 9am–5pm, and the prescribing team decides your restart dose.
I restarted Mounjaro and it's not working. What should I do?
Give it time and review the basics first. If you restarted on a lower dose, progress may be slower while you titrate up again. Plateaus of a few weeks are normal. Review food intake honestly, protect protein and activity, check sleep and alcohol, and ask your prescriber whether a dose step-up is appropriate. Do not double doses or add unlicensed products. If you have lost less than 5% after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss next steps.
