In this guide
01 · The short answer
Can you store your Mounjaro pen in the fridge?
Yes, the fridge is exactly where Mounjaro pens belong. The product information says to keep Mounjaro pens in a fridge at 2–8°C and never to freeze them.1 That is the default for a pen you have not opened yet and the sensible default for a pen you are part-way through.
The in-use rule is more flexible. Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge not above 30°C for up to 30 days — useful for short trips — after which it should be discarded.1 So you have a choice: put the pen back in the fridge between doses, or keep it somewhere cool and convenient, as long as you respect the 30 days (not above 30°C) limit. Many people simply return it to the fridge after each injection so there is nothing to track.
02 · Used pens
Can you store a used Mounjaro pen in the fridge?
Yes, a pen you have already injected from can go back in the fridge. "Used" can mean two different things, and the right action differs, so it helps to separate them.
A pen still holding doses. Each KwikPen contains four weekly doses.1 Between injections it is an in-use pen. Store it in the fridge with the cap on, or keep it out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days. Either route is covered by the product information.
A pen that is empty or finished. There is nothing left to preserve, so refrigeration is pointless. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order from us, so dispose of used needles in the sharps bin rather than the household bin. Ask your pharmacy if you are unsure how to return a full sharps bin locally.
For a deeper walk-through of the in-use stage, see our page on the used Mounjaro pen and the guide to how to store Mounjaro after first use.
03 · What to do next
What should you do with your pen today?
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Unopened pen, kept cold | Leave it in the fridge at 2–8°C until you need it. It keeps until the expiry date printed on the box. |
| Pen in use, between weekly doses | Fridge with the cap on, or out of the fridge for up to 30 days at a temperature not above 30°C. |
| Pen in use, travelling | Hand luggage, ideally in a cool bag with the prescription label or a copy of the prescription. |
| Pen may have frozen | Do not use it. Contact the pharmacy for a replacement. |
| Unopened pen left out of the fridge | Do not guess. Check with the pharmacy before injecting. |
| Pen beyond the in-use window | Discard it, even if medicine appears to remain. |

04 · Unopened pen storage
How should you store unopened Mounjaro pens?
Keep unopened pens in the fridge until you are ready to start them. Mounjaro pens are kept at 2–8°C and must never be frozen.1 Unopened pens should be kept in the fridge and keep until the expiry date printed on the box.1
In practice that means you can hold a spare pen safely while you work through the current one. Leave it in its original carton, which helps protect it from light and keeps the batch number and expiry date to hand.
Place the carton where it cannot end up against a freezer compartment or the coldest, icy surfaces of the fridge, because a pen that freezes cannot be used.
Our orders arrive in temperature-controlled packaging by free next-day tracked delivery, so the first job when the parcel arrives is to open it and put the pens in the fridge. Same-day dispatch applies when you order by 3pm.
05 · Out of the fridge
How long can a Mounjaro pen stay out of the fridge?
Once a pen is in use it can stay out of the fridge for up to 30 days (not above 30°C), as long as it stays below the labelled temperature limit.
That window is for an in-use pen. For an unopened pen, the safe line is different: unopened pens should be kept in the fridge and keep until the expiry date printed on the box. If an unopened pen has been out of the fridge, check with the pharmacy before using it rather than relying on a remembered day limit — figures circulating online often come from other countries' labels.1
Do not substitute a figure you saw in a forum or on a foreign leaflet.
Keep the cap on to protect the pen from light, whether it is in the fridge or on a shelf.1 Avoid places that get hot, such as a car dashboard, a windowsill in direct sun or beside a radiator, because the labelled temperature limit is easy to exceed there.
06 · The 30-day limit
Why does a Mounjaro pen only last 30 days (not above 30°C) once in use?
Thirty days is the licensed in-use limit stated in the UK product information, after which the pen should be discarded.1
It lines up neatly with the dosing. Each KwikPen contains four weekly doses, and you inject once a week, so a pen is designed to be finished in about a month of weekly use.1 Most people never come close to the limit unless they pause treatment part-way through a pen.
Can you use the same pen for eight weeks? No. Using a pen beyond the in-use window takes it outside what was tested for sterility and potency. If you have paused treatment and a pen has been in use longer than the window, it should be discarded and replaced rather than stretched.
Can a pen be made to last longer? Not beyond its limits. What you can do is avoid waste: keep the pen cap on, store it consistently, never leave it in heat and keep a note of the day you first used it. A first-use date on the carton removes the guesswork.
Has anyone used Mounjaro after the limit? People ask, but the answer for your own safety is the same: discard it. Your prescriber can help if cost or supply is driving the question.
07 · Cold and effectiveness
Is Mounjaro more effective when cold?
No. The fridge protects the medicine in storage; it does not make the injection work harder. Tirzepatide works by activating the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 Nothing about that depends on the pen's temperature at the moment of injection.
So there is no benefit in chilling a pen further or deliberately keeping it as cold as possible. The risk actually runs the other way: a pen that gets too cold can freeze, and a frozen pen must never be used.1
The licensed sites are the stomach area (at least 5cm from the belly button), the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm if someone else gives the injection, rotating the site with each dose.1
When is the best time of day to take Mounjaro?
There is no best time of day. Mounjaro works the same morning or evening, with or without food, so what matters is the same day each week. Pick a day and time you will remember. Many people choose a weekend morning so early side effects fall on days off.1
This also means storage and timing are separate questions. You do not need to plan your injection around when the pen was last in the fridge, as long as you stay within the 30-day in-use limit (not above 30°C). If you ever need to move your injection day, you can change it as long as at least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since your last dose.1
08 · Travelling with your pen
How do you store a Mounjaro pen when travelling?
Carry the pen in your hand luggage, ideally in a cool bag with the prescription label or a copy of your prescription. You can fly with Mounjaro, and hold luggage can fall below freezing, so carry the pen in hand luggage.
In-use pens tolerate up to 30 days not above 30°C, so most holidays need no special arrangements. For hot climates, use an insulated pouch.1 Check destination rules for travelling with prescription injectables before you fly.1
Practical points that follow from this:
- Pack the pen with its cap on so it stays protected from light.
- Keep it with you in the cabin or in a car's passenger area, never in a hot boot or glovebox.
- Use hotel or rental fridges if available, but avoid placing the pen against an ice compartment where it could freeze.
- Take spare needles and a travel-friendly sharps arrangement; ask us if you need guidance.
Do you need to stop Mounjaro for a holiday? Generally not. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time, then carry on with your usual day. If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose entirely and take the next one on your normal day — never take two doses within 3 days of each other.1 If you are thinking of pausing for longer, talk to your prescriber first. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1
For more on keeping injectable weight-loss medicines safe generally, see our guide to how to store GLP-1 medicines.
09 · Unrefrigerated risks
What are the risks of using unrefrigerated Mounjaro?
The main risk is using a pen whose condition you can no longer vouch for. Within the in-use window and below the labelled temperature, a pen kept out of the fridge is within its licence.1 Outside those limits, the pen is outside the tested window and its sterility and potency are no longer assured.
Do not use a pen that has been frozen, looks cloudy or discoloured, has particles in it, is past its expiry, or has been out of the fridge for more than 30 days, or above 30°C in use.1 A genuine pen's solution is clear and colourless, so any change in appearance is a reason to stop.1
The practical harms are worth naming without exaggeration. A degraded pen may not deliver the dose you expect, which makes side effects and results harder to interpret, and a compromised pen is a safety issue in its own right. Either way, the answer is the same: do not inject, and contact the pharmacy.
If you notice any new symptom after an injection, speak to your prescriber, and you can report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19
10 · Checking your pen
How can you check a pen is genuine and still good?
A genuine UK Mounjaro pen comes from a registered pharmacy with a batch number and expiry date, arrives cold-chain packaged, and the solution inside is clear and colourless.1 Check each of those when a parcel arrives, before the pen goes into your fridge.
If supply or packaging ever seems wrong, check the pharmacy on the GPhC register and contact the pharmacy before injecting.12 Our registration is GPhC 9012878, and our Mounjaro comes through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, as genuine KwikPens. Counterfeit medicines are a real concern, and the MHRA publishes alerts; anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription should be avoided.7
A quick routine before every injection:
- Look at the liquid. It should be clear and colourless, with no particles.
- Check the expiry date on the pen and carton.
- Confirm you have not passed the in-use limit since you first used the pen.
If anything fails the check, do not inject. Contact support Monday–Friday 9am–5pm by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, through the account portal chat, or by phone on 0333 207 0413.
11 · Everyday habits
What storage habits keep things simple?
The easiest routine is to treat the fridge as the pen's home and take it out only for the injection. That removes every question about the in-use window, because the pen is never out for long.
Habits that work for most people:
- Pick a spot. A fixed place in the fridge, away from the freezer compartment, means the pen is never lost behind food or frozen against a wall.
- Keep it capped and boxed. The cap protects it from light, and the carton holds the batch and expiry details.1
- Note the first-use date. Write it on the carton so the in-use window is never a guess.
- Plan your reorder. Repeat orders re-check suitability and there is no auto-shipping, so order in time to keep a spare pen cold and ready.
- Never improvise. If a pen is warmed, frozen or left somewhere unknown, ask rather than assume.
Remember that storage is only one part of safe use. Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, results vary, and your prescriber reviews progress. Our ongoing monthly reviews and side-effect support are there for the questions that do not fit a storage guide. You can also track your doses and pen dates in GLPTrackr, our free companion app for iOS and Android.
Ordering is straightforward: a free online consultation, review by a GPhC-registered prescriber, then dispensing and free next-day tracked delivery.
12 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
