Is stocking up on Mounjaro abroad a good idea?

Generally no, because Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine supplied after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and the dose is chosen for you.¹ A stockpile of one strength can quickly become the wrong strength. Buying abroad also raises practical problems: whether a given country sells Mounjaro, on what terms, and whether you can bring it home. Customs and import rules vary by country, so check with the destination's embassy or customs authority, and your airline, before you travel.

03 · Storage while travelling

Storing Mounjaro when you travel

Unopened pens belong in the fridge until first use, and they keep until the printed expiry date.¹³ Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away. Do not use a pen that has been above 30°C or has been frozen.¹ If an unopened pen has been out of the fridge, check with the pharmacy before using it and read the patient information leaflet.

04 · Flying and posting

Flying with pens and sending them abroad

Keep pens in your hand luggage, in their original packaging with the pharmacy label showing your name, so they are not exposed to hold conditions and are easy to show at security. A doctor's letter or prescription copy can help. Airline and airport policies differ, so confirm with your airline beforehand.

Posting medicine abroad, whether to yourself or someone else, is more restricted than travelling with it. Carriers and destination countries set their own rules, and many do not allow prescription medicines in the post. Check with the carrier and the destination's authorities first. Never ask someone to send you pens from a seller who skips the consultation.

05 · Counterfeit risk

Counterfeit and unregulated sellers

Everyone starts Mounjaro on 2.5mg once a week, and after at least 4 weeks the dose can increase to 5mg, so extra starter pens may soon be the wrong strength.
