Can I Lose a Large Amount of Weight in 3 Months on Mounjaro? (October 2026)

Losing a very large amount of weight in 3 months on Mounjaro is well beyond what trials suggest is typical. A sensible 3-month expectation on a standard titration is mid single digits as a percentage of body weight, with wide individual variation.2 The larger 15–21% trial averages were measured at 72 weeks, not at 3 months. Results vary and your prescriber will set expectations for you. Current as of October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Three months in, most people are still on the lower rungs of the dose ladder, so losses are modest compared with headline trial figures.
  • SURMOUNT-1 measured its 15–21% averages at 72 weeks, not at 3 months. Think in months, not days.
  • A sensible 3-month expectation is mid single digits as a percentage of body weight, with wide individual variation.
  • Slower early progress does not predict failure: the dose you respond to may still be ahead of you.
  • Your prescriber reviews progress; pushing for faster loss by changing doses yourself is not safe.
In this guide

01 · The honest answer

So, can you lose that much weight in 3 months on Mounjaro?

For almost everyone, no, and it would not be a safe target to chase. Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest; most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month.2

Three months in, most people are still on the lower rungs of the dose ladder. In SURMOUNT-1, average weight loss built month by month, with the full 15–21% averages measured at 72 weeks, not at 3 months. Individual results vary.2 If you want the detail, see our guide to how much you can lose in 3 months.

02 · What the data says

Trial results versus a 3-month expectation

The table compares what trials show at different points. These are trial averages, not predictions for you, and they sit alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Point in treatmentWhat to expect
First weeks on 2.5mgAn adjustment phase. Some people notice appetite change and early loss in week one; others feel little until a higher dose. Both are normal.2
3 monthsA sensible expectation is mid single digits as a percentage of body weight, with wide individual variation.
72 weeks (SURMOUNT-1)Average loss of 15% on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg, against 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

03 · Doing the sums

A worked example with real percentages

For someone starting at 100 kg, 5% is about 5 kg, and the 72-week average of 20.9% on 15mg is about 21 kg. That second figure took 72 weeks of treatment alongside diet and exercise, not 3 months.2

The percentage matters more than the stone figure because it scales with your starting weight. A larger starting weight means a larger loss in absolute terms for the same percentage, but the pace of that percentage is still gradual. Judge progress by trend, not individual weigh-ins.2 Our page on Mounjaro weight loss after 3 months shows how that usually unfolds.

04 · Planning

Planning the first months and what they cost

A standard start moves up the strengths one pen at a time. The first four pens (2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg and 10mg), if you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, cost £959.96 at standard prices. A new customer's first order is £40 less with code FIRST40, and every later order is £25 less. The Mounjaro pen starts at £169.99 for the 2.5mg strength as the standard price (prices checked 11 October 2026). A free consultation, reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, decides whether it suits you.

05 · Why speed is not the aim

Why Mounjaro works gradually

Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.

That is an appetite tool, not a crash-diet switch. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 The dose also steps up over time, so the full effect has to be built rather than started at once.

06 · Slow starts are normal

What the first weeks usually look like

The 2.5mg starting weeks are about adjustment, and experiences differ widely. Some people notice appetite change and early loss in week one; others feel little until a higher dose. Both are normal.2

Early loss includes water weight, so the trend over weeks matters more than any single weigh-in. Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle.13 Slower early progress does not predict failure: the dose you respond to may still be ahead of you. If the scales have barely moved, read 3 months on Mounjaro and no weight loss.

07 · Plateaus and pressure

Plateaus, and why not to push the dose

Weight loss on Mounjaro is not linear. Plateaus of a few weeks are normal and expected as the body adapts to a lower weight.2

Within the licence, the responses are to:

  • review food intake honestly, because portions drift back up
  • protect protein and activity
  • check the basics, such as sleep and alcohol
  • ask your prescriber whether a dose step-up is appropriate if you are not yet at maximum

A plateau is not a reason to double doses or add unlicensed products. If a large weight-loss target in 3 months feels urgent, that pressure is a reason to talk to your prescriber, not to change the dose yourself.

08 · Beyond the scales

Health changes that do not show on the scales

In trials, weight loss on tirzepatide came with average improvements in waist size, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood-sugar measures, and most participants with prediabetes returned to normal blood-sugar levels.2 These are trial-average secondary outcomes, not promises.

This is why prescribers talk about weight management as health management rather than appearance. Measuring your waist, how your clothes fit and how you feel can give a fuller picture at 3 months than the scales alone. For a reality check from other angles, see how a larger total loss tends to be reached over time.

09 · Who it is licensed for

Who can use Mounjaro, privately or on the NHS

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines first.

Mounjaro is also available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment.

10 · Is 3 months enough?

Is 3 months enough, and what happens after

Three months is a checkpoint, not a finish line. Trials measured results at 72 weeks, so think in months, not days.2 Our page on whether 3 months on Mounjaro is enough covers this further.

If you want to plan ahead, ordering 3 months of Mounjaro explains how supply works. Repeat orders re-check suitability and nothing ships automatically.

11 · How ordering works

Genuine KwikPens come direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution through official LillyDirect supply, and all six doses are in stock. There are three steps:

  • Free online consultation: a short health questionnaire, no charge and no obligation. Start your free consultation.
  • Prescriber review: reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
  • Dispatch and delivery: same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm, then free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging.

Ongoing monthly reviews are included, and you can browse all weight loss treatments if you want to compare options. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Individual results vary. Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can I lose a very large amount of weight in 3 months on Mounjaro?
It is very unlikely and not a safe target. A sensible 3-month expectation is mid single digits as a percentage of body weight, with wide individual variation. The 15–21% trial averages in SURMOUNT-1 were measured at 72 weeks, not 3 months, and individual results vary. Your prescriber can set realistic goals for you.
How long does it take to lose a large amount of weight on Mounjaro?
There is no fixed timescale, because it depends on your starting weight, dose and lifestyle. Trials measured results at 72 weeks, so think in months, not days. Progress is not linear, and plateaus of a few weeks are normal. Your prescriber reviews your response and discusses whether to continue or adjust treatment.
How does Mounjaro work?
Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve how the body responds to insulin. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.
How much weight do people lose on Mounjaro in the first 3 months?
Three months in, most people are still on lower doses, so losses are modest compared with headline trial figures. A sensible expectation is mid single digits as a percentage of body weight, with wide individual variation. For someone at 100 kg, 5% is about 5 kg. Individual results vary.
What if I lose less than expected after 3 months?
Slower early progress does not predict failure, because the dose you respond to may still be ahead of you. If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.
Should I increase my dose to lose weight faster?
No. Do not change your dose or add unlicensed products yourself. If you have plateaued, review your food intake, protect protein and activity, and check sleep and alcohol. Then ask your prescriber whether a dose step-up is appropriate if you are not yet at maximum.
Who is eligible for Mounjaro for weight loss?
Mounjaro is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber assesses suitability first.
