01 · NHS eligibility

Who can get weight loss injections on the NHS?

People with the highest clinical need come first. NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025, initially for BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46

NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP. See our guides on how to get weight loss injections from the NHS and the Mounjaro injection on the NHS.

02 · Next steps

How do I ask my GP?

Book an appointment, ask for a weight management review, and bring your height, weight and any conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. Your GP can say whether you fall into a current rollout group or should be referred to a specialist weight management service. Ask about waiting times, as availability varies by area. 03 · If you do not qualify

What if I do not qualify yet?

Many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than wait.4 Our free consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, with ongoing monthly reviews included. A Mounjaro pen at the 2.5mg dose has a standard price of £169.99 per month, and new customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40. An automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25). Prices checked 11 October 2026. Start your free consultation or see an NHS alternative.

04 · Ethnic background thresholds

Does ethnic background change the BMI threshold?

Yes. People from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean backgrounds are at higher risk of weight-related health problems at a lower BMI, so clinical thresholds are usually reduced by 2.5 kg/m² for these groups.4 Ask your GP how this applies to you.

05 · What treatment involves

What does Mounjaro do and how well does it work?

Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection that activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors, helping you feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.1 In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, versus 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages; individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.2

Everyone starts on 2.5mg weekly, then steps up after at least 4 weeks on each dose, depending on how you respond, to a maximum of 15mg.1

06 · Safety and contraception

Safety points to know before starting

The most common side effects, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort, and they usually ease within days to a few weeks.13 Get medical help straight away for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.13

Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. Switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method such as condoms, for 4 weeks after starting and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. This applies to the pill only.7 Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive; if you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Who qualifies for weight loss injections on the NHS?
NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions. Thresholds are usually lowered by 2.5 kg/m² for some ethnic backgrounds.
Can my GP prescribe me weight loss injections?
Mounjaro is being rolled out through primary care, so some GPs can prescribe it to people in the current highest-need groups. Wegovy access runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP which route applies to you and whether you meet the present criteria.
Is there a waiting list for weight loss injections on the NHS?
Access is being phased in over several years, with the highest-need groups first, so you may wait until your group is reached. Waiting times vary by area; ask your GP or local weight management service. Many people who meet licensed criteria consider regulated private treatment.
How much weight can you lose on Mounjaro in 3 months?
Weight loss is gradual by design. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest, with most progress building from 5mg onward. Trials measured results at 72 weeks, so think in months, not days. Three months in, most people are still on the lower rungs of the dose ladder, so a sensible 3-month expectation on a standard titration is mid single digits as a percentage of body weight, with wide individual variation. Individual results vary.
What should I avoid while taking Mounjaro?
Do not use it during pregnancy, stop it at least one month before trying to conceive, and do not alter doses outside the licence. If you use the oral contraceptive pill, switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 4 weeks after starting and after each dose increase. Share your full medical history with your prescriber.
Where can I find Mounjaro privately if I do not qualify for the NHS?
A GPhC-registered online pharmacy can supply it after a free consultation reviewed by a prescriber. Across the UK pharmacies we track, Mounjaro pens range from £143.96 to £339.00 per month at standard prices (checked 10 October 2026). See how to buy Mounjaro.
