Can Children Have Weight Loss Injections? UK Guide (October 2026)
No, Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults, not for children, so it is not something to buy or give to a child.1 Other weight-loss medicines have their own licences and are handled by specialist services, so a child's weight concern should start with a GP.

A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Mounjaro's UK licence for weight management covers adults, with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 30 with a weight-related condition.
-
The main Mounjaro trial, SURMOUNT-1, studied 2,539 adults, so its results cannot be applied to children.
-
Never split, share or reduce an adult pen to make a smaller dose; this is outside the licence and has no safety data.
-
A child's weight concern belongs with a GP or a specialist service, not an online order or an unregulated seller.
-
Adults who meet the licensed criteria can start with a free consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.

01 · The short answer
Can children have weight loss injections in the UK?
Mounjaro is not for children. Its UK licence is for weight management in adults, and for type 2 diabetes.1 The eligibility rules are written around adult BMI thresholds: 30 or above, or between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. It must be used with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.1
Other injectable weight-loss medicines, including Wegovy and liraglutide (Saxenda), have their own product information and their own rules. Check the product's Summary of Product Characteristics and ask a GP or specialist, rather than relying on a retailer or social media post. NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP.
If you are worried about a child's weight, the useful next step is a conversation with your GP. They can look at your child's growth, health and family circumstances in a way no online form can. Our weight loss injections guide covers the adult medicines in more detail.
02 · What the evidence covers
What the Mounjaro evidence actually covers
The headline trial, SURMOUNT-1, enrolled 2,539 adults. Those taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, against 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages and individual results vary.
Those numbers describe adults. They say nothing about how a growing child's body would respond, so nobody should use them to argue that a child would lose a similar amount or tolerate the medicine the same way. That is one reason the licence stops at adults.

03 · If you are an adult
If you are an adult who meets the criteria
Adults who meet the licensed criteria can start with a free online consultation, reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. The pen is dispensed by our registered pharmacy, with free next-day tracked delivery and same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm. All six doses are in stock.
The Mounjaro pen starts at £169.99 per month for the 2.5mg starting dose. New customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25). Prices checked 11 October 2026. The consultation is free, and the price shown is the price paid.
Ordering takes three steps:
- Complete the free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no obligation.
- A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
- We dispense and dispatch, and your order arrives in temperature-controlled packaging, with needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance included.
You can start your free consultation here. It is for you as an adult patient, not for ordering on behalf of someone else.
04 · What the licence says
What the Mounjaro licence says about age and eligibility
Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 The wording matters: the licence is for adults, and that is where the evidence, the dose ladder and the prescribing guidance all sit.
For weight management, the eligibility is defined by BMI. An adult qualifies with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Examples of those conditions are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.1 The medicine must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. It does not replace them.
Before deciding, a prescriber assesses your BMI, your medical history and the other medicines you take.1 That assessment is designed for an adult patient who can give their own medical history and consent to treatment. The BNF entry for tirzepatide gives the same indications and dosing framework for prescribers.11
So when someone asks "can children have Mounjaro?", the direct answer is that the product's licence does not extend to them. A medicine used outside its licence is a specialist decision made by a clinician who knows the patient, not something a family should arrange through a website, a friend's prescription or a social media seller.
This does not mean childhood weight is unimportant or that nothing can be done. It means the route is different. A GP can assess growth and general health, ask about eating and activity patterns, and refer on to a specialist service if that is appropriate. For the adult medicines, our guide to Wegovy weight loss injections in the UK sets out how that product compares.
One practical point: if you are a parent who takes Mounjaro yourself, the licence and your prescription are personal to you. The medicine is prescribed after a review of your own health, so it should never be shared with a partner, a friend or a teenager, however similar their situation looks.
05 · Why adult data differs
Why adult trial results do not apply to children
Trial results describe the people who were studied. SURMOUNT-1 enrolled 2,539 adults. Among them, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight.2
These figures are averages for adults. They are not a prediction for any individual, and they say nothing about children. A child's body is still growing, so the question of what weight change is appropriate is a different clinical question from the one the adult trial answered.
The SURMOUNT-5 trial compared tirzepatide with semaglutide in adults with obesity and is the first large head-to-head trial.15 Even there, the participants were adults, so the comparison is relevant to adults choosing between medicines, not to family decisions about children.
It is also worth understanding the pace. Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design: the first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month.1 Trials measured results at 72 weeks, so the right frame is months, not days.
Finally, the trial results come from people using the medicine as part of a programme of diet and activity, not instead of it. That reminds us that any medicine for weight is one part of a broader plan. For children, that plan is built around the whole family's routines and a clinician's advice, which is why a GP is the right first call.
If you want the adult safety picture, our guide on whether weight loss injections are safe goes through risks and side effects for adults.
06 · Dose ladder is adult-designed
The dose ladder and pen are built for adults
Everyone who starts Mounjaro begins on 2.5mg once a week. That starting dose is about letting the body adjust, not about weight loss itself. After at least 4 weeks the dose rises to 5mg, and can then step up by 2.5mg at minimum 4-week intervals (7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg) to a maximum of 15mg weekly, depending on response and tolerance.1 Many people settle at 5mg, 10mg or 15mg. Higher is not automatically better.1
The pen is a pre-filled multi-dose KwikPen in six strengths, and each pen contains four weekly doses.1
This design tells you something. The pen delivers fixed doses along an adult dose ladder. It is not built to provide smaller amounts, and nothing in the product information describes a children's dose.
Altering doses outside the licence means unknown dosing accuracy and no safety data.
For a parent, the conclusion is simple. Do not try to work out a "smaller" dose from an adult pen, and do not accept advice from anyone who offers to do so. If a clinician ever recommends a medicine for a young person, they will do it under a product and dosing schedule designed for that purpose, with specialist follow-up.
Mounjaro is injected under the skin once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day.1 That routine is easy to follow for an adult who has been counselled by a prescriber. It is not a casual routine to hand to a family member.
07 · Unregulated sellers
Unregulated sellers, counterfeits and social media offers
Avoid any seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Anything outside that route is outside the safety net.
The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting suspected side effects and problem products.7 You can check a pharmacy on the GPhC public register; ours is registered under number 9012878.12 If a seller will not show a registration you can verify, treat that as the answer.
Warning signs to look for:
- No consultation or prescription is required to buy.
- The seller promises specific results or dramatic weight-loss claims.
- The product is described as "natural Ozempic" or a similar copy of a prescription brand.
- Pens are sold loose, unlabelled, or by someone who is not a registered pharmacy.
- The offer arrives through social media direct messages.
Colostrum and other "weight loss injection" products sold without a prescription are not the same as licensed GLP-1 medicines. Our page on colostrum weight loss injections explains the difference. Whatever the product, the advice for children is the same: no weight-loss product, injectable or supplement, should be given without a clinician who knows the child.
Genuine Mounjaro supplied by us comes through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, as genuine KwikPens. That is a supply-chain assurance for adult patients with a prescription. It is not a reason to order for anyone else.
If you or your child has taken something suspicious or has had an unexpected reaction to any medicine, seek medical advice and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19 If someone has severe, persistent stomach pain, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing, get medical help straight away. Reports help regulators spot problem products and genuine safety signals.

08 · NHS and private routes
NHS and private routes: what exists for adults and where children fit
For adults, Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many adults who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
None of that is about children. The NICE recommendation and the rollout stages describe adult eligibility. For a child, the NHS pathway starts with your GP, who can assess whether a referral is appropriate. NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP. For the NHS's own explanation of tirzepatide, see the NHS tirzepatide page.5
Private online pharmacies, including us, work differently from the NHS. We offer a free online consultation, a prescriber review and dispatch. That model suits adults who understand the medicine and can consent for themselves. It is not designed for a parent seeking treatment for a child, and a pharmacy website is not the place to start that conversation.
A specialist service, by contrast, can see a young person in person, measure growth, consider other causes and involve family support. These are things a questionnaire cannot do. If your GP does refer, that service will explain what, if anything, is appropriate and what follow-up will look like.
Adults who are weighing NHS against private care can read our page on registering online for weight loss injections. It covers how our service works, what happens at the consultation and how monthly reviews are handled.
The honest picture is this. For adults there are two routes, NHS and private. For children there is one sensible first step: talk to your GP, and let them decide on any referral.
09 · What a parent can do
What a worried parent can do instead
Start by booking a GP appointment. You can ask about your child's growth, how their weight is changing and whether anything else is going on. Questions such as "what is the best treatment for obesity in children?" or "how do I help an obese child lose weight?" are answered best by someone who has seen your child, because the right approach depends on the individual.
It can help to go prepared. Write down what you have noticed and when, what your child eats and drinks on a typical day, how active they are, how they sleep and whether they have any existing health conditions or take regular medicines. Note any worries about their mood, body image or relationship with food. A GP can use that picture to decide on next steps, which may include referral.
Some practical principles are safe to share without medical detail:
- Avoid framing the conversation around weight or appearance in front of your child; focus on health and family routines.
- Do not start restrictive diets, supplements or products on your own.
- Do not give a child any medicine prescribed for an adult, including weight-loss injections.
- Ask your GP whether your child should be seen by a specialist service.
Questions like "why does my 10 year old have belly fat?" have many possible answers, and only a clinician can tell you which applies. A clinician can look at the whole picture. The NHS also publishes general information on medicines and conditions that you can read before the appointment.5
If your child is distressed about their weight, or you notice signs of an unhealthy relationship with food, say so at the appointment. These concerns matter as much as the number on the scale.
Many parents also have their own weight concerns. If you are an adult wanting to explore treatment for yourself, you can browse all weight loss treatments or begin with a consultation. Looking after your own health and modelling a steady, positive approach is a legitimate part of supporting a family, but your own treatment should always be separate from your child's care.
10 · Adults: safe handling
If you use Mounjaro at home: storage and handling
If you are an adult using Mounjaro in a household that includes young people, treat the pen as a prescription medicine that belongs to you alone. Store it as the product information describes and handle it carefully.
Keep Mounjaro pens in a fridge at 2 to 8°C and never freeze them. Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge not above 30°C for up to 30 days, after which it should be discarded. Keep the pen cap on to protect it from light, and never use a pen that has been frozen.1 Unopened pens should be kept in the fridge until first use and keep until the printed expiry date. If an unopened pen has been out of the fridge, check with the pharmacy before using it.
When you travel, carry pens in hand luggage, ideally in a cool bag with the prescription label or a copy of your prescription. Hold luggage can fall below freezing. In-use pens tolerate up to 30 days not above 30°C, so most holidays need no special arrangements, though hot climates call for an insulated pouch.13
Day-to-day rules are simple. Inject once a week on the same day, at any time of day, with or without food. Licensed sites are the stomach area (at least 5cm from the belly button), the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm if someone else gives the injection. Rotate the site each dose.1 Missed a dose? Take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours), otherwise skip it and take the next on your usual day. Never take two doses within 3 days of each other.1
You can change your injection day as long as at least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since your last dose.1 Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order, so used needles go into the sharps bin and nowhere else.
Our prescribing team provides ongoing monthly reviews and side-effect support, so adult patients are not left to manage alone. If you have questions about thyroid history or other conditions before starting, our guide to weight loss injections and thyroid problems is a good place to begin.
11 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
