A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • A GP can prescribe weight loss medication, but NHS Mounjaro access is phased in over several years, starting with the highest-need groups.
  • NICE recommends Mounjaro on the NHS for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.
  • The primary-care rollout began in June 2025, initially for BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.
  • The licence is wider than the NHS criteria: BMI 30+, or 27–30 with a weight-related condition, alongside diet and activity.
  • If you do not qualify on the NHS yet, a GPhC-registered prescriber can assess you through a free online consultation.

01 · The short answer

Can a GP prescribe weight loss medication, and will they?

Yes, a GP can prescribe weight loss medication, and you are entitled to ask. Whether they prescribe a particular medicine depends on NHS criteria, local pathways and your own health history rather than on the GP's willingness alone.

For Mounjaro (tirzepatide), the position is that it is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46 Full rollout is expected to take years.

So the honest answer to "will my GP prescribe it?" is: possibly, if you are in a group the rollout has reached. If you are not, your GP can still discuss other options, review your health and tell you where your area stands. For Wegovy, NHS access runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP.

02 · Your options

NHS route or private route: how they compare

You can choose between asking your GP and using a regulated private prescriber, and some people do both: they register their interest with the GP while starting privately. The table sets out the practical differences.

QuestionNHS via your GPPrivate via an online pharmacy
Who decidesYour GP or a specialist weight-management serviceA GPhC-registered prescriber reviewing your consultation
Eligibility for MounjaroNICE: BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, with the rollout starting at the highest needLicence: BMI 30+, or 27–30 with a weight-related condition

Follow-upThrough the NHS service you are referred toMonthly reviews and dose-titration by the prescribing team

Neither route is "better" for everyone. The NHS route removes the medicine cost if you qualify; the private route is open to a wider licensed group and does not depend on where the rollout has reached.14

03 · If the NHS is not available to you yet

Getting a private prescription for Mounjaro

If you meet the licensed criteria but not yet the NHS ones, a private prescription is the realistic alternative. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and it is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

A new-customer discount of £40 applies to a first order at any dose, and every later order is £25 off the standard price (code DOSE25).

Planning ahead: if you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. A first year costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg. A new customer's first order is £40 less and every later order £25 less. The consultation is free and the price shown is the price paid.

How ordering works:

  • Free online consultation. A short health questionnaire, no charge and no obligation. Start your free consultation.
  • Prescriber review. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it, not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
  • Dispatch and delivery. Same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm, then free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99.

04 · Who qualifies on NHS

Who qualifies for Mounjaro on the NHS?

NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46 Your GP surgery or integrated care board can tell you which stage your area has reached.

The licence is broader than the NHS criteria. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.111 That gap is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

Whichever route you take, a prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable for you.1

05 · Asking your GP

How to ask your GP about weight loss medication

Book a routine appointment and say plainly that you want to talk about medication for weight management. A little preparation makes a short appointment far more useful.

  • Know your numbers. Bring your most recent height and weight, so your BMI can be worked out, and a list of any weight-related conditions you have.
  • List your medicines. Include anything you buy over the counter, because some medicines interact with Mounjaro.
  • Ask where the rollout stands. Ask whether your practice is offering Mounjaro yet and which groups it is starting with.
  • Ask about alternatives. If you do not qualify yet, ask about local weight-management services and what support is available while you wait.

If the GP says you do not currently meet the NHS criteria, that is a statement about NHS access, not about whether the medicine is licensed for you. Ask whether you should be reviewed again as the rollout widens.4

06 · Other prescribers

Can other health professionals prescribe too?

Prescribing rights differ between professions, and many readers ask about roles other than a GP. We have separate guides for each: nurse practitioners, physician associates, psychiatric nurse practitioners, gastroenterologists and neurologists.

Dietitians and nutritionists play a large part in weight management, but prescribing is a separate question. For a wider view of what is available, see all weight loss treatments.

07 · What to expect

What the medicine does and what results look like

Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. These are trial averages; individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.

At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20%.2 Trial averages do not predict your own result.

08 · Tell your prescriber

What to tell any prescriber before starting

Tell your prescriber about everything you take, because Mounjaro slows stomach emptying and can affect how quickly some oral medicines are absorbed, particularly when you start treatment or increase the dose.113

Pay particular attention to warfarin or other narrow-margin medicines, insulin, and sulfonylureas, where doses may need reducing to avoid low blood sugar. No adjustment is needed for paracetamol.13 The same applies whether you are seen by your GP or an online prescriber, which is why a full medicines list matters at the first consultation.

09 · Supplements and cheaper options

"Poor man's Ozempic" and cheaper alternatives

Products marketed as a "poor man's Ozempic" or "nature's Ozempic", such as berberine, are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight. Supplement dosing is not standardised.

If cost is your concern, compare like with like. Across the UK pharmacies we track, the gap between providers for the same Mounjaro dose runs from £27 to £41 (checked 10 October 2026), so it is worth checking prices. Whoever you buy from, use a GPhC-registered pharmacy; you can check the register, and the MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting side effects.7 Never buy from anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription.

We supply Mounjaro through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, as genuine KwikPens, with all six doses in stock. See the Buy Mounjaro page for details.

10 · Pen life and storage

How long does a pen last?

A Mounjaro KwikPen is a once-weekly pre-filled multi-dose pen, and each pen is one 4-week supply. Unopened pens are stored in the fridge until first use and keep until the printed expiry date. Once in use, a UK KwikPen is licensed for up to 30 days (not above 30°C) out of the fridge.113

Follow the pen's instructions for injecting, and check the patient information leaflet if you are unsure about storage.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can I ask my GP for weight loss medication?
Yes. Book a routine appointment and say you want to discuss medication for weight management. Bring your height, weight and a list of your medicines and conditions. Your GP will assess whether you meet NHS criteria; for Mounjaro, NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, with access phased in over several years.
Who qualifies for Mounjaro on the NHS?
NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions. Full rollout is expected to take years, so ask your GP surgery where your area currently stands.
Will a GP prescribe Ozempic for weight loss?
Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes only; it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and prescribing it for weight loss is off-label. The licensed weight-management options are Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg). NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services, so ask your GP. Mounjaro is a different medicine, tirzepatide, which NICE recommends for eligible adults on the NHS, with access phased in over several years.
What is known as the "poor man's Ozempic"?
The phrase is used for low-cost supplements such as berberine, sometimes sold as "nature's Ozempic". They are not licensed prescription medicines, have no clinical oversight, and their dosing is not standardised. Dramatic weight-loss claims made for them should be treated with caution; a prescriber can talk you through licensed options instead.
What is a cheaper alternative to Ozempic?
If you want a licensed alternative, ask a prescriber about options such as Mounjaro or Wegovy. Across the UK pharmacies we track, Mounjaro pens range from £143.96 to £339.00 (checked 10 October 2026). Cheap supplements are not equivalent treatments.
Who should not take Ozempic?
Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes only, so ask your prescriber and check its patient leaflet. For Mounjaro, you should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Mention warfarin or other narrow-margin medicines, insulin and sulfonylureas, where doses may need reducing to avoid low blood sugar.
Can I get weight loss medication privately if my GP says no?
Yes, if you meet the licensed criteria: a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 30 with a weight-related condition. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews a free online consultation, and unsuitable orders are refunded automatically. A GP declining on NHS grounds is about NHS access, not about whether the medicine is licensed for you.
