Bydureon GLP-1: Is Bydureon a GLP-1 Medicine? (October 2026)

Yes, Bydureon is a GLP-1 medicine. Its active ingredient is exenatide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist given as a once-weekly injection for type 2 diabetes. It is not a weight-loss brand and it is not Mounjaro. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) acts on both GIP and GLP-1 receptors.1 Current as of October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Bydureon contains exenatide, which belongs to the GLP-1 receptor agonist class and is used for type 2 diabetes.
  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide) activates two receptors, GIP and GLP-1, so it is not a single-action GLP-1 medicine.
  • Being in the same drug class does not make two medicines interchangeable; licences, doses and evidence differ.
  • Never swap or stop a diabetes medicine without your prescriber. Bydureon questions belong with your diabetes team.
  • If you are researching weight management, a free online consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

Is Bydureon a GLP-1 medicine?

Yes. Bydureon is the brand name for an extended-release form of exenatide, and exenatide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist.

Bydureon is prescribed for type 2 diabetes. It is not a weight-management medicine, so it is a different decision from Mounjaro.

02 · Your next step

What should you do next?

It depends on why you are asking. If you take Bydureon now, keep taking it as directed and speak to your diabetes team before any change. If you are comparing options, our page on Bydureon versus Mounjaro sets them side by side.

If your goal is weight management and you meet the licensed criteria, you can start with our weight loss clinic.

03 · GLP-1 versus dual action

How a GLP-1 medicine differs from Mounjaro

A single-action GLP-1 medicine targets one gut-hormone receptor. Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1.1 Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.

That dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic).1

04 · What Mounjaro is licensed for

What Mounjaro is licensed for

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, and individual results vary.

05 · Related GLP-1 terms

Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes only; it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label. Supplement claims such as AMPK and GLP-1 describe body pathways, not a licensed medicine. Other manufacturers' pipelines, for example Boehringer Ingelheim's GLP-1 work, are separate again.

Medicines in development or with no UK licence should not be treated as options. Only a prescriber can tell you what is appropriate for you.

06 · NHS and private access

NHS and private access to weight-management injections

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).4 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

How ordering works

How ordering works at EverydayMeds

Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.

  1. EverydayMeds online consultation on a mobile phone

    Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes

Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.

  2. A clinician ready to review an online consultation

Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day

A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.

  3. An EverydayMeds delivery box

    Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Is Bydureon a GLP-1?
Yes. Bydureon contains exenatide, which is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, and it is given as a once-weekly injection for type 2 diabetes. It sits in the same broad class as semaglutide, but Mounjaro's tirzepatide is different because it activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors.
Is Bydureon the same as Mounjaro?
No. Bydureon is exenatide, a single-action GLP-1 receptor agonist used for diabetes. Mounjaro is tirzepatide, which activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors and is licensed in the UK for both weight management and type 2 diabetes. They are different medicines with separate licences, so do not swap one for the other yourself.
Which diabetes medicine should I take?
The right diabetes treatment depends on the person, so your GP or diabetes team decides. It depends on your blood sugar, other conditions, other medicines and side-effect tolerance. Never change treatment without speaking to your prescriber.
What is the wonder drug for diabetes?
No medicine is a wonder drug. Diabetes treatment combines diet, activity, monitoring and medicines chosen for the individual. GLP-1 medicines are an important class, and Mounjaro is licensed for type 2 diabetes in the UK, but suitability and results vary from person to person.
Which snacks and biscuits are okay for diabetics?
Your diabetes team or a registered dietitian can give you a suitable snack list. Needs differ by treatment and blood sugar targets. Ask your diabetes team or a registered dietitian for personal advice, and check food labels. If you use insulin or similar medicines, ask how food choices affect your doses.
Can I get Mounjaro if I have used a GLP-1 like Bydureon?
That is a decision for a prescriber. Tell them every medicine you take, including diabetes treatments, because some combinations need dose adjustments. Never stop a diabetes medicine on your own.
