If you are searching for a semaglutide injection to buy, the most useful thing this page can do is tell you clearly what the licensed product is, and steer you away from the versions that are not.Unlicensed and falsified GLP-1 medicines are available through some online and unregulated sources in the UK, so it is important to know how to identify legitimate supply.

Here is the honest picture.

What Licensed Semaglutide Weight Loss Medication Injection Actually Is

In the UK, the licensed injectable semaglutide for weight management is Wegovy, made by Novo Nordisk. It is a prescription-only medicine, and it comes as a pre-filled injection pen, not a vial you fill yourself.

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Its active ingredient in Wegovy mimics a naturally occurring hormone, and Wegovy contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient also used in Ozempic.

In the UK, semaglutide is also prescribed as Ozempic and Rybelsus, although these licensed products are used for different indications and formulations. It acts on a single hormone pathway, GLP-1, which is a natural hormone involved in appetite and blood sugar control, helping reduce appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and reduce blood sugar spikes after eating.

That is worth stating plainly because it is often described incorrectly: semaglutide does not act on the GIP receptor. The medicine that acts on both GLP-1 and GIP is tirzepatide, which is a different drug (brand name Mounjaro). If you have read that semaglutide works on "GIP and GLP-1," that information was wrong, and it is worth knowing which medicine you are actually considering, especially as it can also affect blood sugar levels.

The licensed doses

Wegovy treatment starts at 0.25 mg once a week, with the dose gradually increased every four weeks to 2.4 mg. For some adults with obesity, the maximum weekly dose can now be increased to 7.2 mg. A single-dose 7.2 mg pen was approved by the MHRA in April 2026.

If a seller offers injectable semaglutide in a 10 mg or 20 mg vial for weight loss, this does not match the licensed UK Wegovy injection dosing and should be treated as a warning sign.

There is also a semaglutide weight loss tablet now

In June 2026, the MHRA approved an oral form, the Wegovy pill, a once-daily tablet of semaglutide taken up to a 25mg maintenance dose. It is a different product from the injection and from Rybelsus, the lower-dose semaglutide tablet licensed only for type 2 diabetes. If a daily tablet suits you better than a weekly injection, our oral GLP-1 options cover it.

The Warning Signs: "Vials", "Peptides" and "Research" Pens

A large amount of semaglutide sold online in the UK is not licensed medicine. It is worth knowing the vocabulary, because the sellers use specific words.

The following should be treated as warning signs:

  • "Semaglutide vial" or "buy semaglutide vial UK". Licensed semaglutide injection is a pre-filled pen. A vial you draw up yourself is not the licensed product.
  • "Research peptide", "research pen", "not for human consumption". These phrases are used to sell unlicensed semaglutide while dodging medicines regulation. “For research use only" does not mean a product is authorised for use in people. If a product has not been authorised as a medicine, its quality, safety and effectiveness have not been assessed in the same way as an authorised medicine.
  • "10mg" or "20mg" semaglutide. Not licensed strengths. A red flag on its own.
  • No prescription required. Semaglutide is a prescription only medication. A seller who does not require a prescription and assessment is operating outside the law.
  • A price far below the market. An unusually low price can be a warning sign, particularly if the seller is also offering the product without a prescription or from an unregulated source.

The MHRA has repeatedly warned about unlicensed and falsified weight-loss injections in the UK, has taken enforcement action against sellers, and continues to seize illegally sold products. Buying semaglutide from these sources with an unlicensed product, you cannot rely on the product's identity, strength, quality or sterility in the same way you can with an authorised medicine.

Why "research peptide" semaglutide products can be risky

Unlicensed vials may not provide reliable information about concentration or dosing, which can increase the risk of dosing errors. They are made outside pharmaceutical manufacturing standards, so sterility and purity are unknown. And there is nobody accountable if something goes wrong. People have been harmed by self-injecting unlicensed weight-loss products, and the absence of a prescriber means the checks that would catch a dangerous mistake are simply not there.

How to Buy Semaglutide Injection Safely Available in the UK

The safe route is straightforward and it looks like this:

  1. A clinical assessment. A legitimate provider asks about your medical history, current medicines and BMI, and will decline if treatment is not appropriate.
  2. A prescription from a prescriber registered with a UK regulator.
  3. The licensed branded product, Wegovy, as a pre-filled pen in the licensed dose range.
  4. Dispensing by a GPhC-registered pharmacy, which you can verify on the GPhC register.
  5. Cold-chain delivery. Appropriate storage and delivery conditions, according to the product information. .

These checks help you identify a legitimate supply route. If a seller cannot provide a prescription-based service through a legitimate pharmacy, do not buy the medicine.

Who Semaglutide Is Licensed For

For weight management, Wegovy is licensed for adults with obesity or adults who are overweight and have at least one weight-related health condition. The exact eligibility requirements depend on the indication and whether treatment is being provided through the NHS or privately. A prescriber must assess whether it is appropriate for you.

Wegovy is not suitable for everyone. Your prescriber will ask about your medical history, other medicines and whether you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding. They will also consider conditions such as a history of pancreatitis and other factors that may affect treatment suitability.

These are general criteria, not a self-assessment. Treatment suitability depends on an individual clinical assessment, and a prescriber will determine whether this weight loss treatment is appropriate. Safe prescribing should also include tailored weight loss support through an individual treatment plan, and you should speak to your doctor or prescriber if anything changes clinically.

What the Evidence Shows and Side Effects

Semaglutide's weight-management evidence comes from the STEP programme of clinical trials, which assessed outcomes by body mass index (BMI) and in adults with weight related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, dyslipidaemia, obstructive sleep apnoea, or high blood pressure. NICE assessed this evidence in its technology appraisal of semaglutide (TA875).

In the pivotal STEP trials, the 2.4mg weekly injection produced mean weight loss results of around 15 to 16 per cent of body weight over 68 weeks, measured against starting weight, alongside a reduced calorie diet and exercise plan and regular exercise, with considerable variation between individuals.

Wegovy has been licensed for weight management since 2023\. The oral 25mg tablet produced broadly comparable results in its own trial, and meaningful weight loss still depends on sticking to a balanced diet as treatment helps reduce appetite and support people trying to lose weight.

For accuracy: these figures relate to semaglutide, and Wegovy is licensed for use in adults as well as certain adolescents aged 12 years and older who meet the relevant criteria. You may see higher figures quoted around 20 per cent, but these can relate to tirzepatide (Mounjaro), a different medicine. It is important not to directly compare results from different trials without considering the study design and patient groups. Ozempic is not licensed for weight loss in the UK.

Semaglutide or Tirzepatide?

Since the two are so often confused, briefly: both are licensed injectable weight-management medicines, both are prescription-only, and both are used alongside a reduced-calorie diet plus regular exercise.

Semaglutide (Wegovy) acts on GLP-1, while Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) acts on GLP-1 and GIP, and in head-to-head data produced greater average weight loss. CClinical trials have shown substantial weight loss with both medicines, although results vary between studies and individuals. Some newer Wegovy data also show greater weight loss with the higher 7.2mg dose in eligible adults. These are clinical trial results rather than guarantees, and individual results can vary. Wegovy has also been studied in adults with overweight or obesity and established cardiovascular disease, with evidence showing a reduced risk of major adverse cardiovascular events

Which is appropriate for you depends on your medical history, tolerability and a prescriber's judgement, not on which one you searched for first. Our guide to prescription weight loss treatments sets out the options side by side.

Storage and Use

Licensed semaglutide is temperature sensitive and supplied as a pre-filled pen. Unlike tirzepatide, semaglutide is a single-incretin GLP-1 receptor agonist rather than a dual GIP/GLP-1 agonist. It also has evidence in type 2 diabetes for reducing major adverse cardiovascular events in adults with established cardiovascular disease.

  • Store unopened pens refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C.
  • Follow the in-use storage guidance in the patient information leaflet.
  • Do not freeze, and do not use a pen that has been frozen.
  • Inject once weekly, on any day, with or without food, rotating injection sites such as the stomach, thigh, or upper arm.
  • If you miss a dose, follow the instructions in the patient information leaflet and take the next dose as directed.
  • Never take a double dose, and do not transfer the medicine from the pen into a separate syringe.
  • If side effects are severe or you are unsure how to use it safely, speak to your doctor
  • Dispose of pens and needles in a sharps bin.

Your patient information leaflet provides the specific instructions for your product and should be followed if you are unsure about storage, dosing or use.

Key Takeaways

  • Wegovy starts at 0.25 mg once weekly and can be increased to 2.4 mg. For some adults with obesity, the maximum weekly dose is now 7.2 mg.
  • Semaglutide acts on GLP-1 only, not GIP: that dual action is tirzepatide
  • Licensed doses are 0.25mg to 2.4mg, plus a 7.2mg version, not 10mg or 20mg
  • Products sold as injectable semaglutide in unlicensed vials or as "research" products should be avoided.
  • Buy only with a prescription, from a GPhC-registered pharmacy
  • A daily semaglutide tablet is now licensed as an alternative to the injection
