A first year (13 pens) costs £2,399.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,279.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg. These totals are before discounts: a new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less.

05 · Comparing UK prices

How to compare Mounjaro prices across UK pharmacies

The fairest way to compare is dose for dose, using the same type of price. EverydayMeds keeps its own index of the UK pharmacies we track, checked 25 October 2026. In it, the provider price range for a Mounjaro pen across all doses and providers runs from £143.96 to £319.99. That range is not a starting-dose figure, because it mixes every strength. For the 2.5mg starting pen alone, the range is £143.96 to £179.99.

The smallest and largest gaps between providers for the same dose are £20 and £36.03. In other words, two people buying the same pen on the same day can pay quite different amounts. It pays to check the dose you will be on in three months, not just the one you start on.

06 · What Mounjaro is

What is Mounjaro and how does it work?

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen, the KwikPen, in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.¹

Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.¹ This dual action distinguishes it from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic).

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days. After a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.¹

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine. It is supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and it is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. It is not a standalone fix, and individual results vary. The treatment is a way to support weight management, not a replacement for a healthy diet and regular activity.

Each KwikPen contains four weekly doses. You turn the dose knob until the dose indicator shows the correct dose in the window. Follow the pen's instructions in the patient information leaflet.¹³

07 · Who can get it

Who can take Mounjaro, privately or on the NHS?

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above. It is also licensed for adults with a BMI between 27 and 30 who have at least one weight-related condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable for you.¹

Mounjaro is also available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40 or above with four or more qualifying conditions.⁴⁶ Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

If you have type 2 diabetes, Mounjaro is also licensed for that condition.¹ Whether you can get it through the NHS depends on local access, so your GP or diabetes team is the right place to ask. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, tell the prescriber, because those medicines may need adjusting.

Private treatment is not a shortcut around clinical judgement. The consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script. If the treatment is unsuitable, your order is refunded automatically in full. Tell the prescriber about every medicine you take, any previous side effects, and any plans for pregnancy. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. Everyone starts Mounjaro on 2.5mg once a week. This starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not about weight loss itself. After at least 4 weeks the dose increases to 5mg, and can then step up by 2.5mg at a minimum of 4-week intervals (7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg) up to a maximum of 15mg weekly, depending on how you respond and tolerate it.¹ Many people settle at a maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg. Higher is not automatically better, and your prescriber will guide the right pace.

09 · Buying safely

How to avoid fake Mounjaro when you shop for a low price

The MHRA has seized thousands of fake weight-loss pens in the UK and has issued alerts after falsified Mounjaro pens were identified.⁷ Fake pens have caused hospitalisations, so check the seller before you compare prices. Some contained insulin rather than tirzepatide.

Only buy from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register.¹² Never buy from social media, beauty salons or unverified websites. Genuine treatment always involves a prescription and a clinical consultation, so be wary of anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription. A genuine UK Mounjaro pen comes from a registered pharmacy with a batch number and expiry date, arrives cold-chain packaged, and the solution inside is clear and colourless.¹³ Do not use a pen that:

10 · What to expect

What results to expect from Mounjaro

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.² These are trial averages. Individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. Trial averages do not predict your own result.

At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.² As a worked example only: for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. Your own starting body weight, health and pace will differ.

Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest. Most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month. Trials measured results at 72 weeks, so think in months, not days, and judge progress by trend, not individual weigh-ins.⁴

Experiences in the early weeks differ widely. Some people notice appetite change and early loss in week one, while others feel little until a higher dose. Both are normal. Early loss includes water weight, so the trend over weeks matters more than any single weigh-in. Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle.

Your prescriber reviews how you are responding. If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.⁴ This is why value is not only about the pen price: ongoing review is how a treatment that is not working for you gets spotted.

Think about the long term too. A healthy diet, regular activity and support through your weight loss journey all matter. Talk to your prescriber about your goal weight and a realistic plan, including what happens when you eventually stop.

11 · Side effects

Mounjaro side effects and when to seek help

Like all medicines, Mounjaro can cause side effects, and most are digestive. The most common, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort. Common effects (up to 1 in 10) include indigestion, reduced appetite, dizziness, reflux, burping, hair shedding and injection-site reactions. Side effects are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose, and for most people they ease within days to a few weeks as the body adjusts.¹³

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Get medical help straight away for:

• severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis);
• pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems);
• signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.

If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion). Your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.¹

You can report any suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.¹⁹

Mounjaro and the contraceptive pill need care. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method such as condoms, for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. This applies to the pill only; implants, coils and injections are unaffected.⁷

12 · Using your pen

How to inject, store and travel with Mounjaro

Mounjaro is injected under the skin (subcutaneously) once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food. Licensed injection sites are the stomach area (at least 5cm from the belly button), the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm if someone else gives the injection. Rotate the site with each dose.¹ Follow the pen's instructions in the patient information leaflet.

There is no best time of day. Mounjaro works the same morning or evening. What matters is the same day each week. Many people choose a weekend morning so early side effects fall on days off. You can change your injection day if at least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since your last dose.¹

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time, then carry on with your usual day. If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose entirely and take the next one on your normal day. Never take two doses within 3 days of each other.¹

Keep Mounjaro pens in a fridge at 2–8°C and never freeze them. Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, which is useful for short trips, and must then be thrown away. Keep the pen cap on to protect it from light, and never use a pen that has been above 30°C or frozen.¹

You can fly with Mounjaro. Carry pens in hand luggage, because hold luggage can fall below freezing, ideally in a cool bag with the prescription label or a copy of your prescription. In-use pens tolerate up to 30 days at a temperature not above 30°C, so most holidays need no special arrangements. For hot climates use an insulated pouch, and check destination rules for travelling with prescription injectables before you fly. Unopened pens should be kept in the fridge and keep until the expiry date printed on the box. If an unopened pen has been out of the fridge, check with the pharmacy before using it.¹³

13 · Mounjaro vs alternatives

Mounjaro compared with other weight loss options

Mounjaro is one of several prescription weight loss treatments, and the prescriber decides what suits the person. Wegovy (semaglutide) is a once-weekly injection whose pens are 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg. The dose steps up after 4 weeks on each of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg and 1.7mg, so the 2.4mg maintenance dose starts from week 17.¹⁸ Our first Wegovy pen costs £99.99 as a first-order price, so compare it with Mounjaro's first-order price (£129.99), never with a standard price. Liraglutide (Saxenda, and products such as Erly) is supplied at 6mg per millilitre and is a daily injection, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy. Other prescription treatments exist and your prescriber can explain which are appropriate for your health history.

NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine in the UK, so the answer to whether you can buy semaglutide in the UK is yes, but only with a prescription from a registered prescriber after a consultation. The first large head-to-head trial of tirzepatide and semaglutide for weight loss is SURMOUNT-5, so avoid comparing numbers from different trials as though they were a direct contest. The decision should rest on your health, your preferences and your prescriber's advice.

Over-the-counter options and supplements are available cheaply without assessment, but they come with no clinical oversight and are not equivalent to prescription medicines. If you are tempted by a product promising dramatic weight-loss claims, speak to a pharmacist first.
