A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Bleeding gums are not listed as a side effect in the Mounjaro patient leaflet.
  • Bleeding that starts or continues while you are on Mounjaro still deserves a dental check, whatever the cause turns out to be.
  • Tell your dentist you take Mounjaro, and tell your prescriber about any new symptom, including mouth changes.
  • You can report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, even if it is not a listed one.
  • Heavy bleeding that will not stop, or bleeding from the bowel, is a separate matter: get medical help straight away.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Is Mounjaro making my gums bleed?

Probably not directly, and nobody can say for certain from the outside. Bleeding gums are not a listed side effect in the Mounjaro SmPC or the patient information leaflet.113 It does not mean your gums are fine, and it does not mean the timing is a coincidence. It means the cause needs to be found by someone who can look in your mouth.

Many people start Mounjaro at a point when they are also changing how they eat, drink and manage their routine. Any of those changes could plausibly coincide with gum trouble. Our guide on whether Mounjaro causes bleeding gums covers the same question from another angle.

02 · Your decision

What to do if your gums are bleeding

Book a dental appointment, and tell your prescriber at the same time. Bleeding that comes and goes for a short period after a change in brushing is one thing. Bleeding that keeps happening, or comes with swelling, soreness, a bad taste or loose teeth, is another. A dentist or hygienist is the right person to decide which it is.

While you wait, a few sensible, non-clinical steps are reasonable: keep brushing gently rather than stopping, keep cleaning between your teeth if you already do, and note when the bleeding began relative to your doses. That timeline helps both your dentist and your prescriber.

Do not stop or change your Mounjaro dose on your own because of a gum problem. Speak to the prescribing team first. If you are an existing customer, our aftercare includes monthly reviews and side-effect support, so you can raise it there.

03 · What the label says

What the product information says about bleeding gums

The SmPC and patient leaflet list the known side effects of Mounjaro, and bleeding gums are not among them.113

If you have a new symptom you think may relate to treatment, discuss it with your prescriber. You can also report it yourself through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, which exists precisely so that regulators can spot patterns the original trials missed.19

04 · Possible indirect routes

Indirect reasons gums might change on treatment

Mounjaro works by activating the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which helps regulate appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties.2 Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals. That is the intended effect, and it supports a reduced-calorie diet.

The medicine itself is not listed as acting on the gums. But changes in how you eat and drink are a reasonable thing to think about. If you are eating less, snacking differently, or drinking less fluid than before, your mouth may be affected, and a dentist can tell you whether that is relevant.

Equally, bleeding gums are common in the general population and have many causes unrelated to any medicine. Brushing technique, plaque build-up, gum inflammation and smoking are some of the things a dentist will consider. Starting Mounjaro does not protect you from any of them.

05 · Talking to your dentist

Telling your dentist you take Mounjaro

Yes, you should tell your dentist. Any dental professional needs a full list of your medicines, whether prescription or private, and Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine that you inject once a week.1 Mention the strength you are on, how long you have taken it, and any other conditions, particularly type 2 diabetes.

Useful things to bring up at the appointment:

  • when the gum bleeding started compared with your first dose or your last dose increase
  • whether you have noticed a dry mouth, a change in taste or a change in what you eat
  • any other medicines or supplements you take
  • whether you smoke or vape, which a dentist will ask about anyway

You do not need to stop your treatment before a routine check-up. If a procedure is planned, ask the dental team whether they want anything arranged beforehand, and follow their instructions.

Our guide on whether Mounjaro affects teeth and gums goes into the dental side in more depth.

06 · Dental work and anaesthesia

Dental work, sedation and anaesthetic while on Mounjaro

You can usually discuss dental treatment openly with your dentist, but tell them about Mounjaro every time.

For a simple local anaesthetic, such as a numbing injection for a filling, your dentist will decide what is appropriate once they know your medicines. For anything involving sedation, ask in advance what they want you to do about eating, drinking and your weekly dose, and ask your prescriber too. Do not guess or skip a dose on your own initiative.

Planning ahead matters more than any single rule. Give the dental team time to take advice and give your prescriber time to answer.

07 · Tooth pain and mouth problems

Tooth pain, mouth problems and "Ozempic teeth"

It means the cause needs to be worked out by examining you.

"Ozempic teeth" is a media phrase, not a defined condition in the product information for Mounjaro or any other GLP-1 medicine. It tends to be used loosely for any dental trouble in someone taking a weight-loss injection.

If you notice mouth soreness, sensitive teeth, ulcers or changes in taste, write down what and when. A short note makes your dentist's job easier and gives your prescriber something concrete to review.

08 · Bleeding elsewhere in the body

Bleeding from other areas

Bleeding from the bowel is not the same issue as bleeding from the gums, and it should not be assumed to be minor or related to your medication. If you see blood in your stool or on tissue, or have any unexplained bleeding, speak to a clinician; if the bleeding is heavy or will not stop, get medical help straight away.

Our pages on bleeding bum on Mounjaro and bleeding from the bum on Mounjaro cover those situations. As with gums, report a suspected side effect via the Yellow Card scheme if you believe your medicine may be involved.19

09 · Staying safe on treatment

Looking after your mouth while you lose weight

Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 A sensible plan includes looking after your general health, and that includes regular dental check-ups. If you have not seen a dentist for a while, starting a weight-management programme is a good moment to book.

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Individual results vary, and this page is information, not a substitute for medical advice. If you want to know more about NHS routes, ask your GP, because access is being phased in over several years.

10 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can Mounjaro cause bleeding gums?
Bleeding gums are not a listed side effect in the Mounjaro SmPC or patient leaflet. Gums can bleed for many ordinary reasons, though. If it persists while you are on treatment, see a dentist and tell your prescriber so the cause can be worked out.
Is bleeding a side effect of Mounjaro?
The product information lists the known side effects, and you should check the patient leaflet for the full list. Bleeding gums are not on it. If you notice any bleeding you cannot explain, speak to a clinician, and get medical help straight away if it is heavy or will not stop. You can also report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
Why am I suddenly bleeding from my gums?
Sudden gum bleeding has many possible causes, and only someone examining your mouth can say which applies. Plaque, gum inflammation and brushing changes are all things a dentist will consider. If it keeps happening, see a dentist and mention that you take Mounjaro and when the bleeding began.
Do I have to tell my dentist I'm on Mounjaro?
Yes, you should. Dental professionals need a full list of your medicines to treat you safely. Mention Mounjaro, your current strength, how long you have taken it and any other conditions. It takes a moment and helps them plan any treatment, sedation or advice properly.
Can I have dental work while taking Mounjaro?
You can generally discuss dental work with your dentist, but tell them you take Mounjaro before anything is planned. Do not stop or skip doses on your own. For anything beyond routine care, ask the dental team and your prescriber for instructions in advance.
Can Mounjaro cause tooth pain or mouth problems?
Tooth pain and gum problems are not listed side effects in the Mounjaro product information, so they are not established effects of the medicine. They still need investigating. Book a dental appointment, note when symptoms began, and tell your prescriber about any new symptom.
What are Ozempic teeth?
"Ozempic teeth" is a media phrase, not a defined condition for Mounjaro or any other GLP-1 medicine. It is used loosely for dental trouble in people taking weight-loss injections. If you have dental symptoms, a dentist can examine you and find the actual cause.
Can I get anaesthesia if I'm taking Mounjaro?
Tell whoever is providing anaesthesia or sedation that you take Mounjaro, because it slows how quickly the stomach empties. Ask in advance what they want you to do about eating, drinking and your weekly dose, and check with your prescriber. Do not change your dose without advice.
