Which Weight Loss Medication Is Best for Menopausal Women? (October 2026)

There is no single best weight loss medication for menopausal women: the prescriber decides what suits you, and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy are the licensed weekly injections. Neither is licensed specifically for menopause or PCOS; eligibility rests on your BMI and health, assessed by a prescriber. Our Mounjaro pen starts at £169.99 per month. A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Menopause is not a licensed reason to take weight loss medication; your BMI and weight-related health conditions decide eligibility.
  • Mounjaro and Wegovy are both weekly injections; Mounjaro activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors, while semaglutide acts on one.
  • For PCOS, weight loss is a first-line recommendation, and Mounjaro may be suitable if you meet the standard BMI criteria.
  • Tell your prescriber about HRT, the contraceptive pill and everything else you take, because slower stomach emptying can change absorption.
  • No medicine targets belly fat alone; medication supports a reduced-calorie diet and more activity.

01 · The short answer

Which weight loss medication suits menopausal women?

The right medication is the licensed one that fits your BMI, your other health conditions and the other medicines you take. Menopause changes how many women feel about their weight, but it is not a separate eligibility category. A prescriber looks at the same factors they would for any adult.

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. These are the thresholds a prescriber works from; they will also ask about your history and current medicines.1

OptionHow it is takenWhat to know
Mounjaro (tirzepatide)Weekly pre-filled pen in six strengths, 2.5mg to 15mgActivates GIP and GLP-1 receptors together1
Wegovy (semaglutide)Weekly pen: 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg, 2.4mgActs on one receptor (GLP-1); steps up after 4 weeks on each of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg and 1.7mg, with 2.4mg from week 17
Liraglutide (Saxenda and similar)Daily injection, supplied at 6mg/mlDaily rather than weekly dosing; your prescriber can advise on figures

02 · Your situation

Menopause, post-menopause or PCOS: what changes?

For menopause and post-menopause, the medication choice does not change; the conversation does. Mention your menopausal symptoms, any HRT and any other long-term medicines, so the prescriber can check interactions and suitability.

For PCOS the picture is more specific. Mounjaro is not licensed specifically for PCOS, but many women with PCOS meet the licensed weight-management criteria. Weight loss itself is a first-line recommendation that can improve insulin resistance, cycles and symptoms.1 Our PCOS weight loss medication guide goes deeper.

03 · How Mounjaro works

How Mounjaro works

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, a weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly, licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1

Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1

This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic). That difference is a mechanism, not a promise of a particular result for you; individual results vary.2

04 · Menopause belly questions

Does medication get rid of menopause belly?

No medicine can promise to remove fat from one area of the body. Mounjaro works on appetite and stomach emptying, so any weight lost is a whole-body result that varies from person to person.1

Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and that combination is the realistic route.1

Be wary of supplements marketed as natural alternatives. They are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight, and their dosing is not standardised. They are not equivalent to a licensed medicine reviewed by a prescriber.

05 · PCOS and fertility

PCOS, fertility and contraception

Eligibility for women with PCOS is assessed on the standard BMI criteria, and PCOS is not a separate pathway. Mention PCOS and any fertility plans in your consultation, because improving weight can restore ovulation.1

That matters if you are perimenopausal and still ovulating, or have PCOS and are not planning pregnancy. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1

Our full PCOS medication guide covers the condition in more depth. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.

06 · HRT and other medicines

HRT and other medicines

Because Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, it can affect how quickly some oral medicines are absorbed, particularly when you start treatment or increase the dose.1

Tell your prescriber about everything you take, including HRT and anything bought over the counter. Be especially clear about warfarin or other narrow-margin medicines, insulin, or sulfonylureas, where doses may need reducing to avoid low blood sugar. No adjustment is needed for paracetamol.11

Report any new symptoms to your prescriber and consider reporting side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19 Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.

07 · NHS or private?

NHS or private treatment?

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).4, 6

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. Ask your GP where you sit in the local rollout.

Privately, your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99), and every later order is £25 off the standard price.

08 · How to get started

How to get started with us

You start with a free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.

Approved orders are dispensed by our registered pharmacy (GPhC 9012878), with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm and free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging. All six doses are in stock, supplied through official LillyDirect supply.

Ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and side-effect support come with treatment. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary, and this page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What is the best weight loss medication for menopausal women?
There is no single best option. Licensed choices include Mounjaro and Wegovy, both weekly injections, and the right one depends on your BMI, health conditions and other medicines. Menopause itself is not a licensed indication, so a GPhC-registered prescriber assesses you on the standard criteria and advises which suits you.
Does Mounjaro get rid of menopause belly?
Mounjaro cannot target belly fat specifically. It activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors, helping you feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet. Any weight lost is a whole-body result, and individual results vary.
Will Ozempic get rid of menopause belly?
Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes; it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label. No medicine can promise to remove belly fat from one area. Ask a prescriber which licensed option is appropriate for you.
What is the best weight loss medication for PCOS?
Mounjaro is not licensed specifically for PCOS, but many women with PCOS meet the licensed weight-management criteria. Weight loss is a first-line recommendation that can improve insulin resistance, cycles and symptoms. Eligibility uses standard BMI criteria, so mention PCOS and any fertility plans during your consultation.
What is the easiest way for a menopausal woman to lose weight?
There is no effortless route. Medication such as Mounjaro can make it easier to eat less by helping you feel fuller sooner, but it is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber can tell you whether you are eligible, and the NHS is also phasing in access.
Can I take weight loss medication with HRT?
Tell your prescriber about your HRT before starting. Because Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, it can affect how quickly some oral medicines are absorbed, especially at the start or when the dose rises. Your prescriber reviews everything you take and advises whether anything needs adjusting. Never change HRT without medical advice.
Does a menopause belly ever go away?
Overall weight change from a reduced-calorie diet, more activity and, where eligible, a licensed medicine may change body shape, but results vary. Discuss your goals and any persistent symptoms with your GP or prescriber.
How much does Mounjaro cost for menopausal women?
The price is the same for everyone. The standard 2.5mg starter pen costs £169.99 per month, and a new customer's first order is £40 off with code FIRST40. Every later order is £25 off the standard price. Prices checked 10 October 2026.
