Vitamins for Mounjaro Hair Loss UK (October 2026)
The first step for Mounjaro hair shedding is adequate protein and balanced nutrition rather than a vitamin megadose, because shedding is linked to rapid weight loss itself, not a direct drug effect.1 Hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people on tirzepatide versus 1.0% on placebo. If you suspect a deficiency, ask a clinician before supplementing.

01 · The short verdict
What should you actually take for Mounjaro hair shedding?
Start with food, not a pill. Temporary hair shedding is a recognised side effect of Mounjaro, reported as common in trials and linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect.1 For most people it settles as weight stabilises. Protein intake and overall nutrition matter, which is another reason the reduced-calorie diet should stay balanced.
| Option | — | Sensible approach |
|---|---|---|
| Protein at every meal | Protein intake and nutrition matter; a protein source at every meal also protects lean tissue.1 | Build each meal around a protein source, even when appetite is low. |
| Balanced reduced-calorie diet | Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so the aim is a sustainable deficit, not extreme restriction. | Keep variety: vegetables, fibre, protein and fluids. |
| Multivitamin | A standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while losing weight; it is not shown to prevent shedding. | Ask a pharmacist whether a general multivitamin suits you and your medicines. |
| Single vitamins or minerals (iron, zinc, vitamin D, biotin) | No target is set for these in Mounjaro users. Dosing is not standardised. | Ask a clinician about a check before taking any of them. |
| Collagen | No clinical evidence it treats shedding. | Treat it as an optional protein source, not a treatment. |
| Hair shampoos and serums | Cosmetic. | Use gentle products if you like them; see our shampoo guide. |

02 · Decision factors
The three decisions readers actually face
First: is this shedding, or something else? If hair fall began some weeks after you started losing weight, shedding is plausible. If it began suddenly, comes with patches, scalp soreness or other symptoms, speak to your prescriber or GP rather than self-treating. Tell your clinical team about any new symptom during treatment.
Second: are you eating enough protein? This is the one lever you control today, and it costs nothing beyond what you already eat. Many people on Mounjaro find it hard because appetite is low. That is why we suggest planning protein first, then filling in the rest of the plate.
Third: is your pace of loss sensible? Rapid weight loss is the linked cause, so a pace guided by your prescriber rather than maximum speed is part of the answer. If you are struggling with a dose step, your prescriber can hold the current dose longer before stepping up.1
03 · Cost and ordering
How do you order Mounjaro?
Ordering takes three steps. First, you complete a free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Second, a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Third, our registered pharmacy dispenses it, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm and free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging. Start your free consultation or see our Buy Mounjaro page for the full picture. All six doses are in stock.
Ongoing monthly clinical reviews are included, which gives you a regular point to raise hair shedding, appetite and protein intake with the prescribing team. Repeat orders re-check suitability, so nothing ships automatically.
04 · Why hair sheds
Why does hair shed on Mounjaro?
Hair shedding on Mounjaro is linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than to a direct effect of the drug. That distinction matters because it changes what you can do about it. If the body is under the strain of quick weight change and eating much less, hair is one place it can show.1
The product information lists hair shedding among the common side effects, affecting up to 1 in 10 people. The most common effects, affecting more than 1 in 10, are digestive: nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort.1 Hair shedding sits in the next tier, alongside indigestion, reduced appetite, dizziness, reflux, burping and injection-site reactions.
In the weight-management trials, hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide, compared with 1.0% on placebo.1 Read that in proportion. It means most people in the trials did not report hair loss, but it was reported more often than on placebo. So if you are noticing more hair in the brush or the shower, you are not imagining a possible effect, and you are not alone.
Why does the weight-loss link matter for your choices? Because the three things you can influence are all connected to it: how much you eat, how much protein is in that food, and how fast you lose. A supplement does not change any of those on its own.
It also helps to know what the medicine does. Tirzepatide activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.1 That is the intended effect, and it is why eating enough of the right things takes deliberate planning. A smaller appetite is not a reason to let protein slip.
Timing is another reason people worry. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears. Do not stop treatment on your own because of shedding without speaking to your prescriber; the more useful move is to talk to your clinical team about your diet, your pace of loss and how you are feeling.
For the timeline question, see our page on whether Mounjaro hair loss is temporary. For the full list of effects and what to do about them, the Patient Information Leaflet is the reference to read.13
05 · Protein comes first
Is protein more important than vitamins?
For hair shedding on Mounjaro, protein and overall nutrition are the factors that matter most, so they come before any vitamin. Temporary shedding is linked to rapid weight loss, and protein intake and overall nutrition matter, which is another reason the reduced-calorie diet should stay balanced.1
Protein has a second job on this medicine. Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, and protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance. The two levers are adequate protein, with a protein source at every meal, and resistance exercise two or more times a week. This matters more, not less, as the dose rises and appetite falls.
If you want a number, ask your prescriber or a registered dietitian.
Making protein easier when you are not hungry
Low appetite is the usual obstacle. Eat smaller meals slowly and stop at the first feeling of fullness, which is the standard advice for reducing nausea.1 Because you stop early, the protein item should come first on the plate. If you leave half the meal, leave the vegetables or the starch, not the protein.
Favour plain, lower-fat foods while you adjust to a new dose, since many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, and large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly. Keep fluids regular through the day; dehydration makes everything harder, including constipation and fatigue.
Protein supplements such as shakes are a food-format choice rather than a medical treatment. They can be a convenient way to include protein when a full meal feels like too much, but they are not a substitute for varied food.
What the trial results do and do not tell you
In SURMOUNT-1, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. These are trial averages and individual results vary. A large loss is the expected context for hair shedding, which is why feeding the body properly while you lose matters.
If you want a wider approach, our Mounjaro hair loss remedy page and our guide on how to reverse Mounjaro hair loss walk through the same principles step by step.
06 · Vitamins and minerals
Which vitamins and minerals are worth considering?
The sensible response is to look at the whole diet first, then ask whether a check or a general supplement would help you.
Ask before you supplement
If you are worried you might be low in something, the right move is a conversation, not a basket. Your prescriber, GP or a pharmacist can look at your diet, your medicines and your symptoms, and tell you whether a test or a supplement makes sense. This matters because supplements are not standardised: dosing is not standardised between brands, and more is not automatically better.
Tell the prescribing team about anything you add to your routine. They review your treatment monthly, and your pharmacist can check a product against your other medicines. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, tell them too, as those medicines may need adjusting during treatment.1
What a general multivitamin can and cannot do
A general multivitamin is a low-cost supplement with no clinical oversight, available without assessment. It can fill small gaps if your appetite is poor, but it does not replace protein and has not been shown to prevent hair shedding on Mounjaro. If you choose one, treat it as a background safety net, not a hair treatment, and do not stack several products that overlap.
Beware of marketing
Supplement labels and sellers often make dramatic weight-loss or hair-regrowth claims. Treat those with caution. Products labelled as natural versions of GLP-1 medicines are not the same as a licensed prescription medicine and carry no clinical oversight. If you want to compare what is on the market in plain terms, our supplement guide explains what to look for.
Report new symptoms
If a supplement or anything else seems to cause a new symptom, stop and speak to a healthcare professional. You can also report suspected side effects of any medicine through the Yellow Card scheme.19 Our wider vitamins for Mounjaro users page covers general supplements beyond hair.
07 · Collagen and extras
Should you take collagen with Mounjaro?
Collagen is optional, and there is no clinical evidence it prevents or treats hair shedding on Mounjaro. Collagen products are dietary supplements, so think of them as a possible extra protein source rather than a treatment. Whether one is right for you is a question for a pharmacist or dietitian.
No collagen product has been shown to be better than another for GLP-1 hair loss.
Face, skin and muscle
Some people also worry about facial volume and loose skin. "Ozempic face" is not a drug effect. It is what losing a significant amount of weight quickly can do to facial volume, on any method including diet or surgery, and the same applies to loose skin. The counter-measures protect lean mass: adequate protein, resistance exercise, and a loss pace guided by your prescriber rather than maximum speed. Skin commonly adapts gradually after weight stabilises.
Other add-ons people ask about
Biotin gummies, hair-skin-nails blends, "nature's Ozempic" products and fibre supplements are all low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight. Dosing is not standardised, and none has been shown to help hair shedding. If you are tempted by one, check the label with a pharmacist. Do not combine several at once hoping one will work.
A simple test helps: if a product claims a dramatic result, ask what trial supports it in people taking tirzepatide. If the answer is none, it is marketing. By contrast, the facts are modest and clear: shedding is common, linked to rapid weight loss, and for most people it settles as weight stabilises.1
08 · Hair products
Do shampoos and hair serums help GLP-1 hair loss?
If you enjoy a product, a gentle routine does no harm for most people. It just should not stand in for food, protein and talking to your clinical team.
Treat the hair gently
If hair is shedding, rough handling can make it look worse. Choose a mild shampoo, avoid pulling hair into tight styles, and go easy on heat and harsh chemical treatments while you are shedding. These are common-sense care steps, not treatments, and they will not change the underlying cause.
Be wary of strong claims
Cosmetic products can make hair look or feel fuller, which some people find reassuring, but that is different from treating shedding. Treat before-and-after photos and dramatic regrowth claims with caution.
When a scalp product is the wrong tool
If you have patches of hair loss, an itchy, painful or inflamed scalp, or hair loss that began before you started treatment, a shampoo is not the answer. See your GP or a pharmacist. As with any new symptom, raise it with your prescriber, because they can look at the whole picture, including your medicines and diet.
Our dedicated best shampoo for Mounjaro hair loss page goes into what to look for on a label and what not to expect.
Tracking what changes
One genuinely useful tool is a record. Note when shedding started, which dose you were on, how much you were eating and how fast weight was changing. That gives your prescriber something concrete to review. GLPTrackr is our free companion app for tracking a GLP-1 journey on iOS and Android, and the printable weight loss tracker offers a paper alternative. Neither is a hair treatment. They simply make your monthly review more specific.
The aim is any method you will actually keep up, whether app or paper, covering weight, doses, side effects and meals.
09 · Eating on low appetite
How do you eat well when your appetite is low?
Eat smaller meals slowly, stop at the first feeling of fullness, and put protein first. No food is banned on Mounjaro, including bananas, but some choices make treatment easier. Prioritise protein at each meal, vegetables and fibre, and regular fluids.1
Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so the aim is a sustainable deficit, not a perfect food list. That phrase is worth holding on to if you are tempted to cut food drastically in the hope of faster results. A very aggressive cut works against the thing linked to shedding: rapid loss.
A practical day
Think in building blocks rather than a rigid menu. A protein item at breakfast, a protein item with a vegetable-based lunch, and the same at the evening meal gives you three protein anchors without needing a large appetite. Small snacks that include protein can fill gaps. Keep portions modest, since large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly.
Digestive effects get in the way
Nausea, constipation and fatigue can all push people to eat less than they should. For nausea, the steps that help most people are smaller meals eaten slowly, plain lower-fat foods while adjusting, good hydration, and avoiding lying down straight after eating. If nausea or vomiting is persistent or you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs prompt attention.
Constipation is very common on Mounjaro and may affect more than 1 in 10 people, because food moves through the gut more slowly and many people eat and drink less. Fluid intake comes first, then fibre from vegetables and whole grains, and daily movement. If it persists, a pharmacist can recommend a suitable laxative, and you should contact your clinical team for pain, bloating or more than a few days without a bowel movement.
Fatigue and energy
Fatigue is a recognised common side effect, most noticeable in the first weeks and after dose increases. It usually reflects a mix of the body adjusting and simply eating less, so keep meals balanced with protein especially, stay hydrated, and keep gentle activity going. Tell your clinical team if tiredness is severe or not settling. Feeling tired and noticing shedding together is a good prompt to review how much you are actually eating.
Alcohol
There is no direct interaction between Mounjaro and alcohol, but drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual, and alcohol adds calories that work against your goals. Moderation is the sensible rule.
If you want a week-by-week view of how eating and supplements change as treatment progresses, our week-by-week timeline guide follows the same ground.
10 · How long it lasts
How long does Mounjaro hair shedding last, and when should you get advice?
For most people, shedding settles as weight stabilises.
The linked cause explains why. Shedding follows the pace of weight loss, so it tends to ease once the pace slows and weight levels off. Because the dose ladder is gradual, side effects generally appear in the first days after starting or increasing a dose, peak early and settle as the body adapts.1 Hair is a slower story than nausea, but the principle that things settle with adaptation applies. Our page on whether Mounjaro hair loss is temporary looks at this more closely.
Signs to speak to someone
Shedding alone is a recognised side effect, but speak to your prescriber or GP if you notice any of the following. Hair loss in distinct patches. A sore, itchy or inflamed scalp. Shedding that started before treatment. Hair loss alongside other new symptoms. Or if it is distressing you. Tell your clinical team about new symptoms during treatment. You can also report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19
Emergency symptoms are different
Hair shedding is not an emergency, but other effects can be. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting, which may indicate pancreatitis. Also seek immediate medical help for pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes, which may indicate gallbladder problems. Signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing, also need medical help straight away.1
Mood and hair worry
Losing hair can affect how you feel about yourself, and any big change in weight, appetite and routine can affect how you feel. Regulators have looked at whether GLP-1 medicines are linked to low mood or suicidal thoughts, and the EMA's safety committee concluded in 2024 that the evidence does not support a causal link, with the MHRA keeping this under continuous review.17 Even so, tell your prescriber about any history of depression, and seek help promptly if your mood drops or you have distressing thoughts during treatment.
If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. Tell your prescriber about any change in your mood while taking Mounjaro.
Should you stop treatment?
Do not stop on your own without speaking to a clinician. Stopping should always be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system, so stopping does not give an instant change. A better conversation to have is about your pace, your dose step and your diet. If a dose is hard to tolerate, prescribers can hold the current dose longer before stepping up.1 The Patient Information Leaflet is the reference for the full list of effects.13
11 · Is Mounjaro right for you
Is Mounjaro suitable, and what about the NHS?
Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable for you.1
Shedding is a known trade-off, and it is better weighed at the start of treatment. If you are considering treatment, the consultation is the place to talk about it, along with your diet and how you plan to keep protein up.
Understanding the trade-off
In SURMOUNT-1, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight at 72 weeks, and half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20%.2 These are trial averages and individual results vary. Hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people on tirzepatide against 1.0% on placebo,1 and 4.3% on 5mg, 7.1% on 10mg and 6.2% on 15mg stopped treatment because of side effects in SURMOUNT-1, compared with 2.6% on placebo.2 Weigh the whole picture, not one number.
NHS or private
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions. Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.46
