03 · Same medicine everywhere

Is the medicine different between providers?

No. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.¹

That means a pharmacy cannot offer you a different Mounjaro from the genuine product. Any claim that one provider's pens work harder is a marketing line. The results seen in trials depend on the dose, your own response, and following a reduced-calorie diet with more physical activity. Individual results vary.²

What you are really choosing is the quality of the consultation, how well the team supports you through dose increases, and how clearly the costs are laid out.

04 · Reviews and ratings

How far can you trust reviews and "best rated" lists?

Treat them as a prompt to investigate, not as a verdict. Review scores can be gathered in very different ways, and ranked lists are often written by sites with commercial ties to the providers they place first. Forum threads capture strong opinions, good and bad, and cannot tell you whether a pharmacy is regulated.

When you read any review, ask what it actually describes. Praise for fast delivery tells you about logistics. A complaint about a refused order may simply mean the prescriber judged the medicine unsuitable, which is the system working as it should. Look for comments on communication, how problems were handled, and whether the dose guidance felt personal.

05 · Spotting unsafe sellers

Red flags that rule a provider out

Walk away from any seller that offers Mounjaro without a consultation or prescription. A genuine pharmacy must assess you first, because this is a prescription-only medicine.⁷ Social media sellers, beauty salons and unnamed websites fall into this group.

• No GPhC registration number, or one that does not match the name on the register.
• Prices far below everyone else, or a promise of specific results.
• Pressure to buy immediately, or payment only by bank transfer to a personal account.
• No named pharmacy premises and no way to contact a pharmacist.
• Pens sent without cold-chain packaging.

Check any pharmacy on the GPhC register before you pay.¹² If you suspect a counterfeit pen or have a side effect, report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.¹⁹

06 · Price and cost

Cheapest way to get Mounjaro, and what to compare

The lowest sticker price is not always the lowest cost, so compare the full monthly outlay for your dose. Across the UK pharmacies we track (checked 24 October 2026), the cheapest 2.5mg starting pen is £143.96 and the dearest is £179.99. For the same dose, providers can differ by anything from £20 to £36.03.

07 · NHS or private

NHS or private provider?

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).⁴⁶ Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

08 · Switching provider

Can you change provider later?

Yes. Nothing ties you to the pharmacy that supplied your first pen, and we do not run subscriptions that lock you in. If your current provider's price, support or communication falls short, you can move.

Tell the new prescriber your current dose, how long you have been on it, and any side effects. They will assess you afresh, because repeat and new orders both re-check suitability. Keep your last pen's label or order record to hand. Do not skip ahead to a higher dose than you were taking.

09 · Alternatives and cheaper options

Cheaper alternatives and the "poor man's Ozempic"

Some supplements, berberine among them, are marketed as "nature's Ozempic" or the "poor man's Ozempic". They are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight, and dosing is not standardised. They are not an established equivalent of a licensed medicine.

Licensed alternatives exist, including Wegovy (semaglutide) and daily liraglutide. Mounjaro differs because tirzepatide activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, whereas semaglutide is a single-action GLP-1 medicine.¹ Which suits you is a prescriber decision based on your history.

10 · Staying safe on treatment

What to avoid while taking Mounjaro

Always follow the patient information leaflet, and tell your prescriber about every other medicine you take.¹³ Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. Do not change your dose or timing on your own.

If you take insulin or sulfonylureas, your doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar, so speak to your prescriber first. Mounjaro can also reduce absorption of oral contraceptives because stomach emptying slows, so ask what additional protection you need. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.¹

12 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.¹
