Are Weight Loss Pills Safe? A UK Guide (October 2026)
Weight loss pills are only as safe as the product and the seller behind them. Licensed prescription tablets, supplied after a prescriber has reviewed your health, carry known and documented side effects. Unregulated supplements and pills sold without a consultation have no comparable safety or trial evidence. Our weight loss clinic covers the licensed options.

A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Safety depends on whether a pill is a licensed medicine, an unregulated supplement or a counterfeit sold online.
-
Licensed tablets have documented side effects, mostly digestive, and are supplied only after a prescriber review.
-
"Natural GLP-1" supplements such as berberine are not medicines and have no comparable trial evidence.
-
Be wary of any seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription, or promising specific results.
-
There is no tablet form of Mounjaro; tirzepatide is injection-only in the UK.

01 · The short version
Are weight loss pills safe to take?
Some are reasonably safe for the right person, and some are not safe at all, so the honest answer is "it depends on what the pill is". A licensed medicine has been assessed by the regulator, has a product leaflet listing its side effects and is supplied only on prescription. A supplement sold as a slimming aid has none of that.
Two questions settle most of it. First, is this a licensed medicine with a UK product licence? Second, did a registered prescriber review your health and medicines before it was supplied? If either answer is no, treat the product with real caution.
Is it a good idea to take weight loss pills at all? For many adults the sensible route is a licensed treatment used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. Our guide to whether weight loss pills work sets out what the evidence supports and what it does not.
02 · Compare the types
Which weight loss pills are safer, and which are not?
The table groups the main types by how much regulation and evidence sit behind them.
| Type of pill | Regulated as a medicine? | Trial evidence | Safety position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide) | Yes, licensed in the UK, prescription-only | Yes (OASIS 4) | Digestive side effects are most common; prescriber checks suitability20 |
| Foundayo (orforglipron) | Yes, licensed in the UK, prescription-only | Yes (ATTAIN-1) | Digestive side effects are most common; may affect oral contraceptive pills21 |
| Orlistat tablets | Yes, licensed | Smaller average losses than the GLP-1 medicines | Blocks some dietary fat absorption; see our orlistat safety guide |
| "Natural GLP-1" supplements such as berberine | No, not medicines and not regulated for this use | No comparable trial evidence | Low-cost supplement, no clinical oversight; dosing is not standardised |
| Pills sold without a consultation or prescription | Cannot be relied on | None you can verify | Possible counterfeit or unknown contents; avoid |
03 · What to do next
What should you do if you are considering weight loss pills?
Start with a conversation with a prescriber rather than a product page. A GPhC-registered prescriber will ask about your weight, health conditions and current medicines, then say whether a licensed treatment is suitable and which one.
If you prefer an injection to a tablet, Mounjaro is a licensed once-weekly option. A free online consultation is the first step, and the prescriber decides whether it is right for you.
If you are weighing up tablets, read our pages on prescription weight loss pills in the UK and whether GLP-1 pills are safe before you decide.
04 · Licensed GLP-1 tablets
What do we know about the licensed GLP-1 tablets?
Two GLP-1 weight-loss tablets are now licensed in the UK, and both are prescription-only. They are Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide, made by Novo Nordisk) and Foundayo (orforglipron, made by Eli Lilly). They are different medicines from Mounjaro, with their own dosing, eligibility checks and trial results.20
Wegovy tablets contain the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection and are taken once a day. They must be taken on an empty stomach after fasting for at least 8 hours, swallowed whole with a sip of water (up to half a glass, about 120ml), and you then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other tablets. Treatment steps up gradually, and the dose can stay at an earlier step if needed.20
Foundayo is also a once-daily tablet, but it can be taken at any time of day, with or without food and without water restrictions. Its dose also rises in steps, depending on response and tolerability.21
Both are licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to under 30 with at least one weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.20, 21 The trials behind them are OASIS 4 and ATTAIN-1, and individual results vary.
You can also read our overview of GLP-1 weight loss pills.
05 · Side effects to expect
What are the bad side effects of weight loss pills?
For the licensed GLP-1 tablets, the most common side effects are digestive. For Wegovy tablets the most common side effects are digestive: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion and stomach pain, along with headache and tiredness. Gallstones and hair loss are listed as common.22
Foundayo shows a similar digestive pattern: nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, vomiting, indigestion and stomach pain. In the ATTAIN-1 trial, some people on the highest dose stopped because of side effects, more than on placebo.23
If they are severe or do not settle, tell your prescriber rather than stopping and starting on your own.
You can report any suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.19
06 · Serious warning signs
When should you seek urgent medical help?
Get medical help straight away if you have severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis). This can be a sign of pancreatitis, and the same warning applies to the GLP-1 and GIP injectable medicines.1
Get medical help straight away if you have pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes, which can point to gallbladder problems. Get medical help straight away if you have signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.13
If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, tell your prescriber before starting any GLP-1 medicine. Watch for low blood sugar, such as shakiness, sweating or confusion. Doses of those medicines may need adjusting, and your prescriber can advise.13
07 · Who should avoid them
Who should not take weight loss pills?
Weight loss medicines are not suitable for everyone, and that is the main reason a prescriber review matters. You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.1
Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list at consultation.1
Contraception needs particular attention with tablets. The Foundayo information says it may make oral contraceptive pills less effective: switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 30 days after starting and for 30 days after each dose increase.21 For Mounjaro, the advice is to switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method such as condoms, for 4 weeks after starting and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. This applies to the pill only.7
08 · Supplements and unlicensed pills
Are supplements and "natural GLP-1" pills safe?
"Natural GLP-1" supplements such as berberine are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence. That makes them a different category from licensed tablets, not a gentler version of them. Dosing is not standardised, and nobody reviews your health or medicines before you buy.
These products are often marketed with dramatic weight-loss claims and nicknames that borrow the names of real medicines. Do not read a catchy name as proof of a similar effect. A low-cost supplement with no clinical oversight cannot be compared with a licensed medicine that went through trials.
The same caution applies to products labelled as "research" peptides or compounded copies of prescription medicines. They have no safety data and no regulated supply chain, and anything promising faster results outside a licensed pathway is a warning sign.
Our page on whether appetite suppressant pills are safe and the blog on fat loss pills and tablets cover this ground in more detail.
09 · Orlistat
Where does orlistat fit?
Orlistat is a licensed tablet that blocks some dietary fat absorption, and it produces smaller average losses than the newer GLP-1 medicines.
If you are considering it, read our guide to what to eat on orlistat and the page on orlistat safety and contraindications. A prescriber or pharmacist can say whether it suits your health and other medicines.
10 · Spotting unsafe sellers
How can you spot an unsafe seller?
The clearest red flag is a seller offering to supply a weight loss medicine without a consultation or prescription. Prescription medicines should only be supplied after a registered prescriber has reviewed your suitability. Other warning signs are promises of specific results, pressure to buy quickly and prices that look too good to be true.

The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting side effects and suspect products.7 Counterfeit medicines are a particular worry with injectables bought from social media or marketplace sellers.
When you order Mounjaro from us, it comes from official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, as genuine KwikPens. Our safe weight loss injections page explains how ordering works.
11 · Mounjaro: no tablet
Is there a Mounjaro weight loss pill?
There is no tablet form of Mounjaro, because tirzepatide is injection-only in the UK. Any product sold as a "Mounjaro pill" is not the licensed medicine and should be treated as a warning sign.1
Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly prescription injection made by Eli Lilly. It is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes, and comes as a pre-filled multi-dose KwikPen in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1
It activates two natural gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1
In the first large head-to-head trial, SURMOUNT-5, adults on tirzepatide lost on average 20.2% of body weight over 72 weeks versus 13.7% on semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy). Both are effective, licensed treatments, and which suits you depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice, not the headline number alone.15
Tablet or injection is partly a matter of routine. Wegovy tablets need a strict empty-stomach routine every morning, Foundayo has no food or water rules, and Mounjaro needs one injection a week. A prescriber will check which option is suitable for your health, your other medicines and your routine.20, 21
12 · NHS and everyday habits
What does the NHS recommend for weight loss?
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.4, 6 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. See our page on weight loss pills on the NHS.
Wegovy's NHS status is different, and NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP.
Whatever medicine you use, licensed treatments are used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. This does not change if you choose a tablet. Your GP, pharmacist or prescriber can help you build a plan that fits your health and tastes.
