Not every weight loss product is prescription-only, but the licensed GLP-1 injections such as Mounjaro are. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is supplied only after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.1 Supplements and similar products are sold without assessment, but they are a different category with no clinical oversight. A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.
-
Supplements and over-the-counter products sold for weight loss are not the same as licensed prescription medicines, and dosing is not standardised.
-
Licensed use needs a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 30 with a weight-related condition, alongside diet and activity.
-
NHS access to Mounjaro is being phased in over several years, so many eligible adults choose regulated private treatment.
-
Anyone offering prescription weight loss injections without a consultation or prescription is a warning sign.

01 · The answer
Which weight loss drugs are prescription-only?
The licensed GLP-1 and GIP/GLP-1 injections are prescription-only, and Mounjaro is the clearest example. Mounjaro is a once-weekly injectable made by Eli Lilly, licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It can only be supplied after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. For a deeper look at the legal status, see our guide on whether Mounjaro is prescription only.
Our guide to GLP-1 prescription rules covers the wider class, and the Foundayo prescription guide covers the newer tablet.
The phrase "weight loss drugs" is loose. It covers licensed medicines, products sold as supplements, and illegal or counterfeit items. Only the first group has been assessed for quality, safety and effectiveness for weight management in the UK.
| Type of product | Prescription needed? | Clinical oversight | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mounjaro (tirzepatide) injection | Yes, prescription-only | Prescriber review and follow-up | Weekly pen, six strengths from 2.5mg to 15mg |
| Wegovy (semaglutide) injection | Prescribed by a clinician | Prescriber review | Weekly pen, 0.25mg up to 2.4mg maintenance |
| Wegovy tablets and Foundayo | Prescribed by a clinician | Prescriber review | Oral GLP-1 options; check current prices on the product page |
| Liraglutide (Saxenda and similar) | Prescribed by a clinician | Prescriber review | Daily injection, 6mg per millilitre |
| Supplements such as berberine | No | None | Low-cost supplement, no clinical oversight; dosing is not standardised |
| Products sold without a consultation or prescription | Should be | None | Possible counterfeit; avoid |
Our page on prescription-only weight loss medication and the slimming drugs guide explain how UK prescribing works in plain language.
02 · Eligibility
Who is entitled to weight loss drugs?
Eligibility depends on BMI and health conditions. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Examples include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.1
It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable for you.1 Meeting the BMI threshold does not mean you will be prescribed it; suitability is decided individually.
NHS criteria are tighter than the licence. NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.4 The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially a BMI of 40 or above with four or more qualifying conditions.6
03 · Getting treatment
How to get prescription weight loss treatment privately
Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. The Mounjaro pen starts at £169.99 for the 2.5mg starting dose. Every dose is in stock, from 2.5mg to 15mg. New customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25).
The process has four steps:
- Free online consultation: a short health questionnaire, with no charge and no obligation.
- Prescriber review: your answers are reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script. Unsuitable orders are refunded automatically.
- Dispensing and dispatch: dispensed by our registered pharmacy, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm.
- Delivery: free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled, discreet packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99.
You can start your free consultation directly, or browse all weight loss treatments first. Our official LillyDirect supply means Mounjaro comes direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution as genuine KwikPens.
04 · Why GPs say no
Why won't my doctor give me weight loss pills?
The most common reason is that you do not meet the criteria for NHS prescribing. NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and NHS access is being phased in over several years.4 The primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially a BMI of 40 or above with four or more qualifying conditions.6
So a GP may be unable to offer a GLP-1 medicine yet, even if you would meet the licence. Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
A GP may also decide a medicine is not suitable after reviewing your history and current medicines. That is the same assessment a private prescriber carries out, and a prescriber declining to prescribe is a safety decision, not a judgement on you.
You may find the word "pills" misleading. The licensed GLP-1 treatments for weight management are mostly injections. Oral options exist, such as Wegovy tablets and Foundayo, but they are also prescription medicines. Ask your GP what pathway applies where you live. NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP.
What will a GP prescribe for weight loss?
This depends on your health, your local NHS services and current guidance. A GP can also refer you to a weight-management service, which is a route in its own right.
05 · NHS versus private
NHS versus private prescribing
Both routes use the same prescription-only medicine; the difference is who decides eligibility and who pays. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is phased in over several years and starts with the highest-need groups.6 NHS prescriptions in England carry a standard charge of £9.90 for most items, but whether you are offered the medicine at all depends on the NHS criteria.
| Question | NHS route | Regulated private route |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility basis | NICE criteria: BMI of at least 35 plus a weight-related condition4 | Licence: BMI 30+, or 27 to 30 with a weight-related condition1 |
| Availability | Phased in over several years6 | Subject to prescriber approval |
| Assessment | GP or specialist service | Consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber |
| Cost to you | Prescription charge applies in England | Medicine price; see the current Mounjaro pen prices |
A private prescription does not skip the clinical decision. It moves it to a different prescriber.
06 · Supplements and fakes
What is the "poor man's Ozempic" and other non-prescription options?
"Poor man's Ozempic" and "nature's Ozempic" are marketing nicknames for low-cost supplements, most often berberine. These products are available cheaply without assessment, with no clinical oversight, and their dosing is not standardised. They are not licensed GLP-1 medicines, and the nickname does not mean they act in the same way.
Be wary of dramatic weight-loss claims on any product that does not need a consultation. Supplements can still interact with other medicines, so tell a pharmacist or prescriber what you take.
Appetite suppressants
If you are looking at tablets marketed as appetite suppressants, read our page on prescription-only appetite suppressants in the UK. The key test is whether a registered prescriber reviews you before supply.
How to avoid counterfeit weight loss drugs
The safest rule is to buy only from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register. Our registration number is 9012878, and you can check it on the GPhC public register.12 The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts, and anyone offering to supply prescription weight loss injections without a consultation or prescription should be treated as a warning sign.7
If you experience a side effect from any medicine, you can report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 Our Mounjaro supply is official LillyDirect stock: genuine KwikPens direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution.
07 · What results to expect
Can weight loss drugs give rapid weight loss?
Licensed treatment works gradually alongside diet and activity, and individual results vary. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2
These are trial averages, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. Trial averages do not predict your own result.2
At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2
Anything that promises a fast, specific result should be treated with caution. A prescriber can discuss realistic expectations for you during your consultation.
08 · Mounjaro and Wegovy
Which is safer, Mounjaro or Wegovy?
Safety depends on your health, other medicines and how you respond, which is why a prescriber assesses you first.1 Read the patient leaflet for the medicine you are prescribed.
They differ in how they work. Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. This dual action distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic).1
Wegovy's pens run 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg once weekly, stepping up after 4 weeks on each of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg and 1.7mg, with the 2.4mg maintenance dose starting from week 17.18 Mounjaro comes in six strengths from 2.5mg to 15mg. Your prescriber decides which is appropriate.
If you are weighing the two, our GLP-1 drugs prescription guide sets out how the class is prescribed. If you have side effects, get medical help straight away for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. Mounjaro is also covered in our page on whether it is only for weight loss, as it is licensed for type 2 diabetes too.
09 · The legal status
Why Mounjaro is classed as a prescription-only medicine
Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, so it can only be supplied after assessment by a prescriber. That means it cannot be bought off a shelf or from a seller who skips the consultation. The UK product information and the BNF set out its indications, dosing and safety information.11
You can read more on the formal classification in our page on the Mounjaro prescription only medicine (POM) status. The practical point is simple: the prescriber, not the buyer, decides whether it is suitable.
If you decide to stop treatment, tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1
You can buy Mounjaro online once a prescriber has approved your consultation. Ongoing monthly reviews are included, and repeat orders re-check suitability with no auto-shipping.
10 · Planning the cost
What does private prescription treatment cost?
The cost depends on the dose you settle on. As of October 2026, across the UK pharmacies we track, Mounjaro pens range from £143.96 to £339.00 depending on dose and provider (index checked 12 October 2026). If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices.
A first year costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg, at standard prices. A new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less than the standard price.
Monthly standard prices for the maintenance doses are £279.99 at 7.5mg, £290.99 at 10mg and £319.99 at 12.5mg. You can pay by Visa or Mastercard, or use Klarna and pay-monthly options, with no subscription lock-in. The consultation is free, and the price shown is the price paid.
