Active GLP-1: What It Means and What Actually Works (October 2026)

Active GLP-1 is the biologically active form of the natural gut hormone glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite, stomach emptying and insulin response. Products sold as 'GLP-1 Active' or 'Essentials GLP-1 Active' are usually supplements, not licensed GLP-1 medicines, and have no comparable trial evidence. Licensed UK options are prescription-only.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Active GLP-1 is a natural hormone made in the gut; it is not a product you can simply swallow in a capsule or sachet.
  • Supplements labelled 'GLP-1 Active' are not medicines, are not regulated for weight loss and have no comparable trial evidence.
  • Licensed GLP-1 treatments in the UK are prescription-only and need a prescriber's review.
  • Mounjaro is an injection with no tablet form; Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are the licensed GLP-1 tablets.
  • Review claims of dramatic weight loss with caution: results from licensed medicines vary between people.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Is 'GLP-1 Active' relevant to you?

It depends on what you are looking at. If you saw 'active GLP-1' in a science article or a lab kit listing, it refers to the hormone itself and has nothing to do with buying a treatment. If you saw it on a shop listing or an advert, it is almost certainly a supplement marketed on the back of the well-known GLP-1 medicines.

The distinction matters because the licensed medicines and the supplements are not the same thing. Licensed GLP-1 treatments have been assessed by the regulator, have published trial results and are supplied only after a prescriber's review. 'Natural GLP-1' supplements are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence.

So the practical question is not 'which active GLP-1 product should I buy?' but 'am I a suitable candidate for a licensed treatment, and what would it involve?'

02 · Your next step

What to do next

If you are exploring weight management, start with what is licensed. Our weight loss clinic explains the options, and the Mounjaro pen starts at £169.99 per month at the standard price. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40. The consultation is free and is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, so you can find out whether treatment is suitable before paying anything.

03 · What the hormone does

What the hormone does

GLP-1 is a natural gut hormone released after eating. It helps regulate appetite, slows how quickly the stomach empties, and improves the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.

It describes biology, not a product category. Our guides on the active ingredient in GLP-1 medicines and GLP-1 molecular weight go further.

Medicines in this class are designed to act on the same receptor system as the hormone. They are not the hormone itself, and they are not interchangeable with each other.

04 · Supplements with the name

Supplements sold as GLP-1 Active

Products named 'GLP-1 Active', 'Essentials GLP-1 Active' or 'Active Life GLP-1' are sold as capsules, tablets, sachets or liquids.

Keep several practical points in mind when you read reviews:

  • A positive review is not evidence. It tells you someone felt satisfied, not that the product did what the label implies.
  • Dosing is not standardised, so two products with similar names can contain very different things.
  • They are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight, so nobody checks whether they suit your health or your other medicines.
  • Dramatic weight-loss claims on a listing should make you more cautious, not less.

If you are weighing up such a product, look at our guides to GLP-1 sachets and AMPK and GLP-1 to see how marketing claims compare with the science. Anything that promises faster results outside a licensed pathway is a warning sign. Side effects from any product can be reported through the Yellow Card scheme.19

05 · Licensed GLP-1 treatments

Licensed GLP-1 treatments in the UK

Several prescription medicines act on the GLP-1 system, and each has its own dosing, eligibility checks and trial results.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injection. Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1.1 There is no tablet form of Mounjaro — tirzepatide is injection-only in the UK.1 You can read about the Mounjaro pen and its prices on our product page.

Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are the two licensed GLP-1 weight-loss tablets. Both are prescription-only. Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection, taken as one tablet once a day.20 Foundayo contains orforglipron, a once-daily GLP-1 tablet made by Eli Lilly, the maker of Mounjaro.21 Current availability and prices are on the Wegovy pill and Foundayo pages.

In the head-to-head SURMOUNT-5 trial, adults on tirzepatide lost on average 20.2% of body weight over 72 weeks versus 13.7% on semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy). Both are effective, licensed treatments; which suits you depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice, not the headline number alone.15 Individual results vary.

06 · Tablets versus injections

Tablets versus injections

The routines differ more than people expect. Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection; Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are once-daily tablets. No trial has compared Mounjaro directly with either tablet, so results from separate trials — with different people, durations and doses — should not be set against each other as if they were head to head.20

The practical differences matter as much as the averages. Wegovy tablets need a strict empty-stomach routine every morning, Foundayo has no food or water rules, and Mounjaro needs one injection a week.21 A prescriber will check which option is suitable for your health, your other medicines and your routine.

Foundayo may make oral contraceptive pills less effective: switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 30 days after starting and for 30 days after each dose increase.21 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 Never run two GLP-1 medicines together, and do not combine Mounjaro with unlicensed 'research' peptides or compounded copies, which have no safety data and no regulated supply chain.

07 · Eating and living well on treatment

What to eat and expect on a GLP-1 medicine

No food is banned on Mounjaro, but some choices make treatment easier. Prioritise protein at each meal, vegetables and fibre, and regular fluids. Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, and large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly — smaller, slower meals work better.1

Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, so adequate protein and regular resistance exercise matter more as appetite falls. Keep fluids up too: vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly, and if you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away.

Trial results are averages of total body weight, and individual results vary.

08 · Getting access

NHS and private access

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment.

Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Same-day dispatch applies when ordered by 3pm. Ongoing monthly reviews are included, and the free GLPTrackr app can help you track your journey.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What does GLP-1 active do?
Active GLP-1 is the natural gut hormone in its working form. It helps regulate appetite, slows how quickly the stomach empties and improves the way the body responds to insulin, so most people feel fuller sooner. Medicines in this class are designed to act on the same system, but supplements using the name are not medicines.
Do GLP-1 Active supplements work for weight loss?
'GLP-1 Active' supplements are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence. Licensed prescription treatments such as Mounjaro and Wegovy have published trial results, though individual results vary. A free consultation can show whether a licensed option suits you.
Is GLP-1 the same as Mounjaro?
No. GLP-1 is a natural hormone; Mounjaro is a prescription medicine containing tirzepatide. Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. That dual action distinguishes it from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide.
Which GLP-1 medicine suits me for weight loss?
No licensed medicine is best for everyone. In SURMOUNT-5, the first large head-to-head trial, tirzepatide produced an average loss of 20.2% over 72 weeks versus 13.7% on semaglutide 2.4mg. Both are effective, licensed treatments. The right one depends on your health, tolerance and prescriber advice, and individual results vary, so the headline number alone should not decide it.
What is the downside to taking GLP-1?
The most common side effects of GLP-1 medicines are digestive, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion and stomach pain. If nausea or vomiting is persistent or you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs prompt attention. Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention: seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. Treatment also works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity, so it is not effortless. A prescriber can discuss risks for your situation.
What to eat on GLP-1?
No food is banned, but prioritise protein at each meal, vegetables, fibre and regular fluids. Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, and large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly, so smaller, slower meals work better. The aim is a sustainable calorie deficit, not a perfect food list.
How do I take a GLP-1 liquid or tablet?
Licensed GLP-1 tablets have strict instructions. Wegovy tablets must be taken on an empty stomach after fasting for at least 8 hours, swallowed whole with a sip of water (up to half a glass, about 120ml), and you then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other tablets. Foundayo can be taken at any time of day, with or without food and without water restrictions; the tablet is swallowed whole. Follow your prescriber's and the leaflet's instructions.
What do I wish I knew before starting GLP-1?
Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, so protein, fluids and resistance exercise matter. Appetite falls as the dose rises, which can make eating enough protein harder. Never combine GLP-1 medicines, and use a regulated prescriber so your suitability and other medicines are checked first.
