Why Does GLP-1 Cause Sulfur Burps? (October 2026)

Burping is listed as a common side effect in the UK Mounjaro patient leaflet (up to 1 in 10 people), and GLP-1 medicines slow how quickly the stomach empties.1 Persistent or severe symptoms need a prescriber's review. Information current as of October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • GLP-1 and GIP/GLP-1 medicines slow stomach emptying, and digestive effects such as burping are common.
  • Sulfur burps are unpleasant but are not, on their own, a sign the medicine is working better or that something is seriously wrong.
  • Smaller meals, eating slowly and stopping at the first feeling of fullness are sensible first steps.
  • Severe or persistent stomach pain needs medical help straight away. For persistent vomiting or being unable to keep fluids down, get medical help straight away.
  • Report new or troubling symptoms to your prescriber and through the Yellow Card scheme.
In this guide

01 · The mechanism

Why GLP-1 medicines are linked to sulfur burps

The most likely reason is slower stomach emptying. Tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro, activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties.1 Semaglutide and other GLP-1 medicines act on the GLP-1 receptor in a similar way.

When food leaves the stomach more slowly, it spends longer being digested.

Burping and wind are on the full list of side effects in the patient information leaflet.13 If you want a closer look at the Mounjaro experience, our guide to why Mounjaro causes sulfur burps goes deeper.

02 · Your next step

Is this relevant to me, and what should I do?

It is relevant if you have started a GLP-1 or GIP/GLP-1 medicine, or raised your dose, and notice eggy burps, bloating or a heavy, full feeling after meals. Many people notice digestive changes around dose changes, so note when yours began.

Your next step is practical. If you are already with us, our team offers side-effect support alongside ongoing monthly reviews.

03 · Foods and habits

Foods and eating habits that may make it worse

Very fatty, fried or very sugary food can make you feel worse, and large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly.

Because your stomach empties more slowly on treatment,1 large meals can sit heavily. Smaller portions, eating slowly and stopping when you feel full are gentler on the gut. Avoid lying down straight after eating.

Do not cut out whole food groups without advice, as your body still needs a balanced diet alongside reduced calories. We cover the trigger list in more detail in what foods cause sulfur burps on Mounjaro.

04 · Relief options

How to get rid of sulfur burps

There is no instant cure, but a few steady changes often take the edge off. Try these first:

  • Eat smaller, more frequent meals rather than a few large ones.
  • Eat slowly and chew well, which also reduces swallowed air.
  • Choose plainer, lower-fat meals on injection day and the day after.
  • Stay well hydrated with still water, and go easy on fizzy drinks.
  • Take gentle exercise such as a walk after meals.

For over-the-counter products such as antacids, alginates or acid-reducing tablets, ask a pharmacist or your prescriber first. They can check they suit you and your other medicines. We do not recommend taking something just because it worked for someone else.

If symptoms continue, read the leaflet's guidance and tell your prescriber.13 You can also report side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19 Our step-by-step page on how to help sulfur burps on Mounjaro lists more ideas.

05 · When to seek help

Do sulfur burps mean I am sick or have pancreatitis?

On their own, sulfur burps do not mean you are ill. They are usually a digestive symptom linked to how slowly food moves through. They do not diagnose pancreatitis, and they do not show the medicine is working better.

Some symptoms are different. Severe, persistent stomach pain, especially if it spreads to your back, needs medical help straight away. If you are repeatedly vomiting or cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team, as dehydration needs medical help straight away. Get medical help straight away if you feel seriously unwell. The patient information leaflet explains which symptoms to act on.13

Eggy burps combined with loose stools are a common pairing, which we discuss in can Mounjaro cause diarrhoea and sulfur burps. Tell your prescriber if both persist.

06 · SIBO and appetite

Can GLP-1 medicines affect appetite?

On anorexia, these medicines reduce appetite on purpose, because most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.1 But if you find yourself fearful of food, skipping meals you need, or becoming preoccupied with weight in a way that feels unhealthy, speak to your prescriber or GP promptly. Treatment is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet, not instead of eating well.

07 · Is it working?

Do sulfur burps mean the medicine is working?

No. Burps tell you nothing reliable about weight loss. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, people on tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages, and individual results vary.2

Side effects and results are separate things. Some people have little digestive upset and still do well, while others have more symptoms. Judge progress with your prescriber at your regular reviews, not by how your stomach feels.

08 · How long it lasts

How long do sulfur burps last?

Side effects are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose, and for most people they ease within days to a few weeks as the body adjusts. That is a general pattern, and your own experience may differ.

If you stop the medicine, tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system.1 There is no way to speed this up. Do not stop or change your dose on your own because of burping; speak to your prescriber first, who can review whether staying at your current dose is right.

For more on this specific question, see sulfur burps on GLP-1 treatment and our complete UK guide to Mounjaro sulfur burps. People often ask whether it is common; our page on whether Mounjaro gives you sulfur burps and the one on why you get sulfur burps on Mounjaro cover that.

09 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
How do I get rid of sulphur burps from GLP-1?
There is no instant fix. Eat smaller meals slowly, stop at the first feeling of fullness, favour plain lower-fat foods and avoid fizzy drinks. Stay hydrated and walk after eating. If it persists, tell your prescriber at your review, and ask a pharmacist before taking any over-the-counter remedy.
Do sulphur burps mean Ozempic is working?
No. Burping is a digestive symptom and says nothing reliable about weight loss. Results vary between people and are judged over the course of treatment alongside diet and activity. Review progress with your prescriber rather than reading meaning into how your stomach feels. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes. It is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply Ozempic for weight loss.
How can I avoid sulfur burps while on Mounjaro?
You may not avoid them entirely, but you can reduce them. Keep meals small, eat slowly and avoid lying down straight after eating. Slower stomach emptying is part of how the medicine works, so some digestive effects are expected. Discuss persistent symptoms with your prescriber.
Do sulphur burps mean I am sick?
Not by themselves. Get medical help straight away if you also have severe or persistent stomach pain. If you are vomiting repeatedly or cannot keep fluids down, get medical help straight away. Tell your prescriber about new symptoms, and report them through the Yellow Card scheme.
Do sulfur burps mean pancreatitis?
Sulfur burps alone do not indicate pancreatitis. The warning signs are different: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without being sick, could be pancreatitis, so stop using Mounjaro and get medical help straight away.
Does Gaviscon or omeprazole help with sulfur burps?
Some people find reflux remedies useful for heartburn, but ask a pharmacist or your prescriber before using any, so they can check suitability alongside your treatment and other medicines.
What is best to eat if I have sulfur burps?
Plain, lower-fat, smaller meals are usually easier on a slowed stomach. Keep your diet balanced and do not cut out food groups without advice.
