A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, and burping, reflux and indigestion are listed side effects that often show up around the start or a dose increase.
  • Rotten-egg-tasting burps are not named in the leaflet, so treat them as part of the digestive picture and tell your prescriber if they persist.
  • Most digestive side effects ease within days to a few weeks as your body adjusts to the dose.
  • Severe, persistent stomach pain, upper right abdominal pain with fever, or yellow skin or eyes needs medical help straight away.
  • Do not stop or change your dose on your own: speak to your prescriber or pharmacist first.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

What sulfur burps on Mounjaro usually mean

Sulfur burps on Mounjaro usually point to a digestive system that is adjusting to the medicine. Tirzepatide acts on two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties.1

The Mounjaro leaflet lists burping, indigestion and reflux as common effects, affecting up to 1 in 10 people. Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort are more common still, affecting more than 1 in 10.13 A burp that tastes or smells of sulfur is not named separately, so think of it as part of that digestive group of effects.

These effects are most likely when you start treatment or move up a dose, and for most people they ease within days to a few weeks.13 If yours are not easing, or they come with other symptoms, that is a reason to talk to someone rather than wait it out.

02 · Your next step

What to do next if you have sulfur burps

Start by noting when the burps happen: how long after your injection, how soon after meals, and whether they began after a dose increase. This diary is useful to your prescriber and costs nothing. Our guides on how to help sulfur burps and how to avoid them go into the practical side in more detail.

A pharmacist or your prescriber can also talk through the options. If you are an existing EverydayMeds customer, our prescribing team offers side-effect support and ongoing monthly reviews, and you can reach us Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, on 0333 207 0413 or at support@everydaymeds.co.uk.

If you are considering treatment and worry about digestive effects, you can start a free online consultation. It is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, who will assess your medical history and current medicines before deciding whether Mounjaro suits you.

03 · Ordering

Getting Mounjaro from a regulated pharmacy

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, so it should only ever be supplied after a consultation reviewed by a prescriber. Anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription is a warning sign. EverydayMeds is a GPhC-registered pharmacy (9012878) and supplies genuine KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply. You can read about the strengths available on the Mounjaro pen page.

Ordering works in three steps:

  • Complete a free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no obligation.
  • A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
  • Our registered pharmacy dispenses it, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm and free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging.

Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order, and repeat orders re-check suitability. Nothing is shipped automatically.

04 · Slow stomach emptying and burps

Why does Mounjaro cause burping?

Mounjaro causes burping mainly because it is designed to slow how quickly the stomach empties. This is part of how it helps you feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.1 The same effect is the reason many people notice fullness, nausea or reflux in the early weeks.

Burping is listed as a common effect in the patient leaflet, alongside indigestion and reflux.13 If food and gas stay in the stomach longer, they have to go somewhere, and burping is one way the body releases them.

What matters in practice is the pattern. Burps that begin soon after a first dose or an increase and then fade fit the usual picture of an adjusting digestive system. Burps that keep getting worse, or arrive with pain or vomiting, deserve a conversation with a professional. Our related guides on eggy burps on Mounjaro and sulphur burps cover the same symptom from slightly different angles.

05 · Warning signs to act on

Do sulfur burps mean I'm sick?

Sulfur burps on their own do not mean you are seriously ill. They are an unpleasant digestive symptom, and digestive effects are the most common side effects of Mounjaro.13 What matters is whether they come with anything else.

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for:

  • severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis);
  • pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems);
  • signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.

If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar, such as shakiness, sweating or confusion. Your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.113

Severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back could be pancreatitis, so stop using Mounjaro and get medical help straight away. If you have that pain, do not wait to see whether the burps settle: get medical help straight away.

06 · Reflux, GERD and indigestion

Does GERD or reflux cause sulfur burps?

Reflux and indigestion can sit alongside burping, and both are listed as common effects of Mounjaro.13 If you already had acid reflux or GERD before treatment, a medicine that slows stomach emptying may make you more aware of it. Which of these is behind your burps is something a clinician can help you work out, because the symptoms overlap.

Signs that reflux is part of the picture include a burning feeling behind the breastbone, a sour taste, or symptoms that worsen when you lie down. If that sounds familiar, our guide to heartburn on Mounjaro is a useful companion read. EverydayMeds is a full UK online pharmacy that also treats acid reflux, and a pharmacist can advise on over-the-counter options. Check with a pharmacist before combining any new product with Mounjaro.

Tell your prescriber about any existing reflux or stomach condition. They need your full medical history and current medicines to judge whether Mounjaro, and which dose, is suitable.1

07 · Burps with diarrhoea

Can Mounjaro cause sulfur burps and diarrhoea together?

Yes, both can occur on Mounjaro, because diarrhoea is one of the most common side effects, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, and burping is a listed common one.13 Seeing them together is not unusual in the first weeks or after a dose increase, when side effects are most likely.

Nausea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort are in the same most-common group. So a day with burps, loose stools and a queasy stomach fits the known pattern of digestive effects. For most people these ease within days to a few weeks.13

If diarrhoea or vomiting is severe or lasts, or you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away. If it comes with severe, persistent stomach pain, get medical help straight away. If you take the contraceptive pill, remember Mounjaro can reduce how well it is absorbed. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method such as condoms, for 4 weeks after starting and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1

08 · Dose increases and timing

Do sulfur burps get worse after a dose increase?

They can, because side effects are most likely when you start treatment or step up a dose.13 Mounjaro comes in six strengths, 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg, and your prescriber moves you between them depending on how you respond, with at least 4 weeks on each dose.1

That means the weeks after a step are the most likely time for burps to appear or intensify. If you have noticed a clear link between a dose change and your symptoms, tell your prescriber. They can decide whether to stay on your current dose for longer before any increase. Please do not change your dose or skip injections on your own, and never take extra doses to compensate.

Following the pen's instructions and keeping to your weekly injection day also helps your prescriber judge what is going on. Store pens in the fridge at 2 to 8°C and never freeze them. Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away. Keep the cap on to protect it from light, and never use a pen that has been frozen.

09 · What helps and what doesn't

What is the fastest way to ease sulfur burps?

There is no proven instant fix for sulfur burps on Mounjaro, and any page promising one is overselling. The most reliable route is time, because digestive side effects usually ease within days to a few weeks as your body adjusts.13 In the meantime, a few steps are sensible.

  • Keep a simple diary of burps, meals and injection days, so patterns stand out.
  • Tell your prescriber if burps are frequent, worsening or affecting your eating.
  • Ask a pharmacist before buying any remedy, supplement or herbal product, as these are not standardised and may not suit you with Mounjaro.
  • Keep taking your medicine as prescribed unless a prescriber tells you otherwise.

Should I eat if I have sulfur burps?

Ask your prescriber how to handle meals if your burps put you off eating. Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.1 If you are struggling to eat or drink at all, do not simply push through; get advice.

What drink gets rid of sulfur burps, and what cancels out sulphur?

No drink has been shown to get rid of them, and nothing reliably cancels out sulphur in the body. Beware of products sold with dramatic claims. For anything you are tempted to try, check with a pharmacist first. Our complete sulfur burps guide for UK patients and the related page on why sulfur burps happen have further reading.

10 · Reporting and review

When to speak to your prescriber and how to report side effects

Speak to your prescriber or pharmacist if your burps last beyond the first few weeks, worsen, or come with other symptoms. The leaflet advises talking to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse about any side effect, including ones not listed.13

You can also report suspected side effects yourself through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 Reports help regulators monitor medicines after they are licensed.

Other odd symptoms can appear in the first weeks too, such as headaches. Our guide to headaches on Mounjaro covers that. As a reminder, Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Why am I getting sulfur burps on Mounjaro?
Mounjaro slows how quickly your stomach empties, and burping, indigestion and reflux are listed side effects. Sulfur-tasting burps are not named separately in the leaflet, so they are best treated as part of that digestive picture. Most digestive effects ease within days to a few weeks. If yours persist or worsen, speak to your prescriber or pharmacist.
Does GERD cause sulfur burps?
Reflux and GERD can accompany burping, and reflux is a listed common effect of Mounjaro. If you already had reflux, slower stomach emptying may make you notice it more. A clinician can help work out which is responsible. Tell your prescriber about any existing reflux, and ask a pharmacist before using any remedy alongside Mounjaro.
Can GLP-1 cause sulfur burps and diarrhoea?
Mounjaro can cause both. Diarrhoea affects more than 1 in 10 people, and burping is a listed common effect. These digestive effects are most likely when starting or increasing a dose and usually ease within days to a few weeks. If you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away.
Are sulfur burps related to pancreatitis?
Sulfur burps are not listed as a sign of pancreatitis. The warning sign is severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting: if you have that, stop using Mounjaro and get medical help straight away. Also get medical help straight away for upper right abdominal pain with fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes, or signs of a severe allergic reaction.
Do sulfur burps mean I'm sick?
On their own, no. They are an unpleasant digestive symptom, and digestive effects are the most common side effects of Mounjaro. What matters is whether they come with severe stomach pain, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or allergic symptoms such as facial swelling, which need medical help straight away. Otherwise, mention persistent burps to your prescriber.
What is the fastest way to cure sulfur burps?
There is no proven instant cure. For most people digestive side effects ease within days to a few weeks as the body adjusts. Keep a symptom diary, tell your prescriber if burps persist, and ask a pharmacist before trying any remedy or supplement. Do not stop or change your dose without speaking to your prescriber first.
Should I eat if I have sulfur burps?
Ask your prescriber how to manage meals if burps affect your appetite. Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. If nausea, vomiting or burps leave you unable to eat or drink properly, do not just push through. Contact your prescriber or pharmacist for advice tailored to you.
What drink gets rid of sulfur burps?
No drink has been shown to get rid of sulfur burps on Mounjaro, and nothing reliably cancels out sulphur. Be cautious of products sold with dramatic claims. Supplement and herbal product dosing is not standardised, so check with a pharmacist before trying anything alongside your medicine. Your prescriber can discuss options if the burps continue.
