What Is the Most Successful Weight Loss Drug? (October 2026)
No single weight loss drug is most successful for everyone; the licensed UK weight-management options include the once-weekly injections tirzepatide (Mounjaro) and semaglutide (Wegovy), both prescription-only. Mounjaro activates two gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-11. Results vary from person to person, and no single drug is best for everyone. This is the position as of October 2026.

A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) and semaglutide (Wegovy) are licensed weight loss injections in the UK; the right one depends on you and your prescriber.
-
Mounjaro activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which is what separates it from semaglutide.
-
Trial results from different studies should never be set side by side as if they were a head-to-head test.
-
Diet pills and supplements sold online do not have the evidence or oversight of licensed medicines.
-
Every licensed option needs a prescriber's review and works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.

01 · The core answer
Which weight loss drug is most successful?
Tirzepatide and semaglutide are two licensed weight loss treatments in the UK, and no licensed medicine is best for everyone. Both are weekly injections. Both are prescription-only, and both are used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity1. Neither is a stand-alone fix.
Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes1. Wegovy is the weight-management brand of semaglutide. Its pens run through a ladder of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg, stepping up after at least four weeks until the 2.4mg maintenance dose is reached from week 17.
Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-11. That dual action is what distinguishes it from single-action medicines such as semaglutide.
02 · Reading the claims
How to read "most successful" claims
Be cautious with any headline that ranks medicines by a single number. Each trial recruits different people, runs for a different length of time and measures results slightly differently. Putting one trial's average beside another's gives a tidy table but a misleading answer. Only a study that gives both medicines to comparable people at the same time can compare them directly.
Averages also hide the spread. Some people lose a great deal, some lose modestly, and a small minority respond poorly to a given medicine. Trial averages do not predict your own result. For a deeper look at the evidence behind one of the licensed options, see how successful Mounjaro is.
03 · What to do next
Which question are you really asking?
Most readers are deciding one of three things. The first is whether they qualify for a licensed medicine at all. The second is whether to wait for NHS access or go privately. The third is which medicine to start with.
For eligibility, the NICE position is that tirzepatide is recommended for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition4. On the NHS, access is being phased in over several years, with the primary-care rollout beginning in June 2025 and the highest-need groups first6. Many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
If you are leaning towards tirzepatide, the Mounjaro pen starts at the 2.5mg dose. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99). Every later order is £25 off the standard price. If you want to understand the wider options first, our weight loss clinic page gives the overview. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews every consultation, and the consultation itself is free.
If you are not sure the medicine is right for you, that is a reasonable place to be. The consultation exists to answer exactly that question, and unsuitable orders are refunded automatically.
04 · What Mounjaro is
What Mounjaro is
Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes1. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen, called a KwikPen, in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg1.
The six strengths exist because treatment is built up gradually. You start at the lowest dose, and your prescriber reviews how you are getting on before any increase. Some people settle on a lower dose and stay there. Others move further up the range. There is no prize for reaching the highest strength, and a lower dose that you tolerate and can keep taking is a perfectly good outcome.
Because Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, it is supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary, and this page is information rather than a substitute for medical advice1.
Where does that leave the "success" question? Mounjaro is one licensed option, and it is only useful if it suits the person taking it. Someone who cannot tolerate it, or who does not qualify for it, gets no benefit from its reputation. That is why a proper assessment matters more than a league table.
Our supply comes directly through official LillyDirect channels, which means genuine KwikPens from Eli Lilly's UK distribution. All six doses are in stock. We mention this because counterfeit and unregulated products are a real risk anywhere weight loss medicines are in demand, and buying from a registered pharmacy is the simplest protection. Our registration is GPhC 9012878, and you can check it on the public register12.
05 · How it works
How tirzepatide works compared with single-action medicines
Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin1. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.
This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic)1. Semaglutide acts on one of those two pathways. Tirzepatide acts on both. What any individual experiences varies.
They change how hungry you feel and how quickly you feel full, which makes it easier to eat less without constant struggle. The diet and activity changes are still the work you do.
The slower stomach emptying is worth understanding. It is part of why you feel full for longer after a meal. It is also part of why some people notice digestive side effects, particularly when starting or after a dose increase. The most common side effects, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort13. If you notice a new symptom you are unsure about, speak to your prescriber, and you can report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme19.
Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system — there is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears1. In plain terms, the medicine does not switch off the moment you stop. It fades over four to five weeks.
Wegovy and Mounjaro are both weekly injections. Liraglutide, supplied as Saxenda and in products such as Erly at a concentration of 6mg per millilitre, is a daily injection, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy. For many people, the dosing rhythm alone is a deciding factor.
06 · Semaglutide and Wegovy
Semaglutide and Wegovy: another licensed option
Wegovy is the brand of semaglutide licensed for weight management. It is a once-weekly injection, and it uses a dose ladder of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg. The steps up happen after at least four weeks, and the 2.4mg maintenance dose is reached from week 17. The 2.4mg dose is the licensed maintenance dose for weight management18.
Wegovy and Ozempic both contain semaglutide, which causes frequent confusion. The usual way to tell them apart is by the licence: Wegovy is the brand licensed for weight management, while Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes. A prescriber would normally choose the product that matches your reason for treatment, and you should not take a medicine intended for another condition without that advice.
For anyone asking which is better, Wegovy or Ozempic, the honest answer is that they are the same active ingredient used for different licensed purposes. For weight management the licensed product is Wegovy.
So how does Wegovy compare with Mounjaro? Both are effective, licensed, weekly injections with a gradual dose ladder. The distinguishing mechanical feature is that Mounjaro acts on two receptors where semaglutide acts on one1. That does not automatically mean a better experience. Which suits you depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice.
Where people differ in practice is tolerability, availability at the time of order, and personal preference. These are decisions to make with a prescriber rather than from a ranking. We would suggest checking availability when you are ready to order, because it varies.
Numbers from separate trials cannot simply be placed side by side. Each trial population, duration and design differs. When you read a website that does that, treat the conclusion with caution.
Wegovy also comes in a tablet form. See the current Wegovy tablet information on the product page rather than relying on a comparison with the injection. A tablet and an injection are different routes, and trial results should not be treated as head to head.
If you are researching switching between the two injections, a prescriber needs to guide the dose you restart on. Do not self-convert between products, because the dose ladders are not interchangeable.
07 · Tablets and newer drugs
Weight loss tablets and newer drugs
Tablet options now exist alongside the injections, including Wegovy tablets, which contain oral semaglutide, and Foundayo, which contains orforglipron2021. Both are prescription medicines and both are used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
They were studied in different populations under different designs. If a tablet appeals to you because you dislike injections, that is a legitimate reason to discuss it with a prescriber. Please check the current Wegovy tablet details on the product page.
What about the new drug "better than Mounjaro"? You will see this claim often. Medicines still in development are not licensed in the UK, so they cannot be prescribed here, and any claim that one is better rests on early or partial evidence. Until a medicine has a UK licence and a full product information sheet, "better" is a prediction rather than a fact. If you came across a seller offering such a product, treat that as a warning sign. Anyone offering to supply a medicine without a consultation or prescription is not operating legitimately.
For what is known about a Moderna weight loss drug, see our page on the Moderna weight loss drug.
On the question of a new weight loss pill coming out soon, the sensible answer is that licensing decisions happen on their own schedule, and nobody can promise a date. What you can do today is speak to a prescriber about the licensed options already available, and revisit the question if something new is approved.
The key principle is simple. A licensed medicine has a product information sheet, a regulator behind it and a defined way to report side effects. A medicine that is merely in the news has none of those things for UK patients yet.
08 · Older drugs and pills
Older weight loss drugs, diet pills and supplements
Do diet pills work? The honest framing is that licensed prescription medicines have been through regulatory review, while the diet pills and supplements sold freely online have not been tested to the same standard. Supplements are low-cost, available cheaply without assessment, and carry no clinical oversight. Their dosing is not standardised, and dramatic weight-loss claims on their packaging should be treated with scepticism.
The phrase "poor man's Ozempic" usually refers to berberine, which some sellers promote as a natural alternative. Calling it "nature's Ozempic" is marketing rather than evidence. It is not a licensed weight-loss treatment, it does not work in the way the prescription medicines do, and it should not be treated as a substitute for them. If you are considering a supplement alongside any medicine, mention it to your prescriber or pharmacist.
History also matters here. Several earlier weight loss drugs had their day and then left the market. If you are curious about them, our guides explain what became of them: fen-phen, Belviq and Meridia. The lesson from that history is that a drug being popular is not the same as a drug being safe, which is why regulation and prescriber oversight exist.
In the UK, the MHRA runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting suspected side effects and publishes alerts on counterfeit medicines7. Weight loss injections are a known target for counterfeiters because demand is high. Buying from a pharmacy listed on the GPhC register is the most reliable protection. You can verify ours on the public register using registration number 901287812.
Warning signs of an unsafe seller include offering to supply without a consultation or prescription, pressure to buy quickly, unusually low prices that cannot be explained, and products that arrive without proper packaging or patient information. If any of these apply, walk away.
Orlistat and other older prescription options exist, and your prescriber can discuss them. The practical point is that your prescriber can talk you through every licensed route and help you choose, rather than leaving you to rank them yourself.
09 · NHS or private
NHS or private: how access works
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years6. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions4. Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
For Wegovy, NHS access runs through specialist weight-management services, so ask your GP.
There are two practical questions here. The first is whether you fall inside the NHS groups being prioritised. Your GP can tell you. The second is whether you are willing to wait. If you are not prioritised yet, or the wait does not suit you, a private consultation is an alternative. It is still a prescriber-led process, with the same standards of suitability review.
The NHS and your prescriber will focus on a sustainable pace and on your overall health. Rapid, fixed-deadline targets are not something a responsible service will promise.
Private treatment does not mean skipping oversight. At EverydayMeds, the free online consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. After that, ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and follow-up assessments are carried out by the prescribing team, with side-effect support available.
Repeat orders re-check suitability, and there is no auto-shipping, so nothing arrives that you have not chosen. You can pay by Visa or Mastercard, Klarna or pay-monthly options, and there are no subscriptions.
If the NHS route is open to you and you would prefer it, that is a perfectly sensible choice, and our page on the weight loss clinic explains the wider context. If you would rather start sooner, the private route exists for that reason.
10 · Costs over a year
What Mounjaro costs over a year
Cost is part of whether a treatment is realistic, so it belongs in any honest answer. Across the UK pharmacies we track, Mounjaro pens at standard prices range from £143.96 to £339.00 per month, as checked on 10 October 2026. The gap between providers for the same dose can be as small as £27 or as large as £41.
Our own prices are shown live. The Mounjaro pen at the 2.5mg starting dose has a standard price of £169.99, and if you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices.
At standard prices, a first year (13 pens) costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg; a new customer's first order is £40 less and every later order £25 less. If you settle at another dose, the monthly pen prices are £279.99 at 7.5mg, £290.99 at 10mg and £319.99 at 12.5mg. The standard prices at 2.5mg, 5mg and 15mg are £169.99, £218.99 and £329.99. Prices were checked 10 October 2026.
It is worth saying plainly that Mounjaro's UK list price changed in the past. Eli Lilly raised the UK list price in September 2025, and pharmacy sell prices vary because of confidential discounts10. That is why we show live prices rather than fixed ones.
A fair way to think about cost is to compare like with like. A treatment you stop early because it is unaffordable has done little for you. Plan for the length of time you expect to stay on it, including the maintenance dose, and consider that your prescriber will review whether continuing is still appropriate.
For tablets, please see the current Wegovy tablet prices on the product page. Delivery is free and next-day on tracked, temperature-controlled packaging, and Saturday delivery is £14.99. Orders placed by 3pm are dispatched the same day.
11 · Ordering and aftercare
How to start, and what aftercare looks like
If you have decided to explore treatment, the process is short. First, you complete a free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Second, a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Third, our registered pharmacy dispenses the order. Fourth, delivery arrives next day, tracked via DPD, in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging.
Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order. That matters because the practical side of a weekly injection is often what worries first-time users most. Follow the instructions that come with the pen, and ask the prescribing team if anything is unclear.
Storage is straightforward. Keep unopened pens in the fridge between 2–8°C until first use, and they keep until the printed expiry date. Once in use, a KwikPen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away. Do not use a pen that has been above 30°C or frozen. For anything else about storage, read the patient information leaflet and ask the pharmacy13.
What happens after the first pen is as important as the first order. Ongoing monthly reviews are included, and your prescriber decides when to increase the dose, hold it or stop. You will not be pushed to a higher strength than you need. Repeat orders re-check suitability each time, so the medicine continues to match your circumstances.
You can also track your progress using GLPTrackr, our free companion app for iOS and Android. It is a record-keeping tool, and it makes review conversations with the prescribing team easier.
Our support team is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, through the account portal chat, or by phone on 0333 207 0413.
Mounjaro is supplied only after consultation and prescriber review, and it is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary1. If you are ready to begin, the Mounjaro pen page shows current prices and starts the consultation. If you are still weighing things up, that is fine too. Understanding the options first is a sensible way to begin.
12 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
How ordering works
How ordering works at EverydayMeds
Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.
Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes
Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.
Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day
A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.
Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery
Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.
Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.
Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.
