A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity — these are the proven partners, not a pill or powder.
  • Supplements marketed as natural alternatives or boosters are not a substitute for the licensed medicine, and their dosing is not standardised.
  • Tell your prescriber about every supplement, herbal product and medicine you take, including oral contraceptives, insulin and sulfonylureas.
  • A plateau is not a reason to double doses or add unlicensed products — review food, protein, activity, sleep and alcohol first.
  • Think in months, not days: judge progress by trend, and your prescriber reviews response after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Do you need to take anything with Mounjaro?

No — you do not need another medicine, pill or powder to make Mounjaro work. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injection licensed in the UK for weight management in adults.1 It activates two natural gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1

That last phrase is the key. The medicine makes eating less easier; it does not replace eating well. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages, individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

So the useful question is not "what pill should I add?" but "what should I do around each injection?"

02 · What to do next

The decision you are really facing

If you are already on Mounjaro, the decision is whether to add a supplement. In nearly every case the answer is to fix the basics first: food quality, protein, movement, sleep and alcohol. Our guide to whether a GLP-1 booster helps explains why add-ons rarely change the outcome.

If you have not started yet, the decision is whether a prescription medicine is right for you at all. A free online consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, who can discuss suitability and what to combine it with. You can see the Mounjaro pen, prices and consultation when you are ready, or read our weight loss clinic overview first. Every dose is in stock, and a starter pen costs £169.99 at standard price; new customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40.

03 · Food that helps

What to eat alongside Mounjaro

Eat regular meals built around protein, vegetables and fibre-rich carbohydrates, in portions that fit a reduced-calorie plan. Mounjaro is licensed for use alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so the food side is part of the treatment, not an afterthought.1

Lean protein is the priority: chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, tofu, beans and plain Greek yoghurt. When appetite is low it is easy to under-eat protein without noticing, so protect protein and activity.2 Starting a meal with the protein, then the vegetables, is a practical habit when you fill up quickly.

Fibre-rich vegetables, fruit, pulses and wholegrains keep meals filling and keep digestion moving. Healthy fats such as olive oil, avocado and nuts are fine in small amounts; they are calorie-dense, so portions matter. Choose what you will actually eat and enjoy, because a plan you can sustain beats a perfect one you drop.

Protein powders and shakes are food products rather than medicines. They can help if you struggle to eat enough on days when appetite is very low, but they are no better than a normal meal that delivers the same nourishment. Check labels for added sugar, and do not let drinks replace meals unless your prescriber or a dietitian suggests it.

Many people also ask about fluids. Staying well hydrated is sensible, and our page on drinking water on Mounjaro covers it in more detail.

04 · Movement and sleep

Movement, sleep and alcohol

Increased physical activity is the other half of the licensed approach, so regular movement is the most evidence-aligned thing you can add.1 You do not need a gym. Walking daily, cycling, swimming or home exercise all count, and strength work is a good companion to a lower calorie intake because it keeps you using your muscles.

Build up gradually. Early weeks on a new dose can bring tiredness and nausea after each injection, so choose gentler sessions on those days and push a little more when you feel well.2

Sleep and alcohol are the quiet variables. Sleep and alcohol are among the basics to check: alcohol adds calories and, on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach, can hit harder than usual.2 Neither needs a dramatic overhaul. Regular bedtimes and fewer drinks are usually enough to notice a difference.

If you want to understand how the medicine itself acts on appetite before planning around it, see how Mounjaro helps you lose weight.

05 · Supplements: what to know

Supplements and "natural Mounjaro" products

No supplement has been shown to add to what Mounjaro does, and none is a substitute for it. Products sold as "nature's Ozempic", berberine blends or GLP-1 boosters are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight, and their dosing is not standardised. They are not licensed medicines, and they have not been through the testing that supports tirzepatide.

It is worth separating three groups:

  • Basic nutrition support. A multivitamin or a protein shake, if your diet is restricted, is generally low-risk. Mention it to your prescriber anyway.
  • Digestive aids. Fibre supplements are sometimes used for constipation. Because Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, discuss any digestive product with your prescriber or pharmacist before starting.1
  • Weight-loss supplements and boosters. These make dramatic weight-loss claims that the evidence does not support. Our page on whether appetite suppressants help you lose weight explains why: "natural GLP-1" supplements are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence.

There is no neat list of supplements to avoid, because the safest rule is to check each product with your prescriber or pharmacist.

If you notice a new symptom after starting any product, tell your prescriber, and report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19

06 · Medicines to flag

Other medicines to mention to your prescriber

Always tell your prescriber about every medicine you take, because tirzepatide can interact with some of them. The best-known example is the oral contraceptive pill: Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed.17 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1

If you use insulin or a sulfonylurea for diabetes, doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar. That is a conversation to have with your prescriber or diabetes team, not something to adjust alone.1

Medicines for nausea or heartburn are sometimes asked about too. Check with your prescriber or pharmacist before starting medicines for nausea or heartburn. Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle, but persistent symptoms deserve a prescriber's review.2

Mounjaro must not be combined with other GLP-1 medicines, unlicensed "research" peptides or compounded copies.

07 · When weight loss stalls

What stops weight loss on Mounjaro

Plateaus of a few weeks are normal and expected as the body adapts to a lower weight.2 Weight loss on Mounjaro is not linear, so a flat fortnight is not a failure.

Within the licence, the responses are practical:

  • Review food intake honestly. Portions drift back up as appetite settles, and drinks and snacks are easy to overlook.
  • Protect protein and activity. Keep protein at each meal and keep moving.
  • Check the basics. Sleep and alcohol both matter.
  • Ask about the dose. Discuss with your prescriber whether a dose step-up is appropriate if you are not yet at maximum.

A plateau is not a reason to double doses or add unlicensed products.2 Missed injections, stopping treatment or very low intake can also affect progress, and your prescriber can help you tell which applies.

If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.2

08 · Speeding it up safely

How to speed up weight loss on Mounjaro

There is no safe way to hurry the process, because weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest; most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month.2 Trials measured results at 72 weeks, so think in months, not days, and judge progress by trend rather than individual weigh-ins.

At around three months, most people are still on the lower rungs of the dose ladder, so a sensible expectation on a standard titration is mid single digits as a percentage of body weight, with wide individual variation. Slower early progress does not predict failure, because the dose you respond to may still be ahead of you.2

What helps in practice is consistency: injecting on schedule, eating protein-rich meals, moving most days and tracking honestly. A free companion app such as GLPTrackr can help you log doses and trends.

Early loss includes water weight, so the first readings on the scale can mislead in either direction. Some people notice appetite change and early loss in week one, others feel little until a higher dose, and both are normal.2

09 · Health beyond the scales

Benefits beyond weight

Weight is not the only thing to track. In trials, weight loss on tirzepatide came with average improvements in waist size, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood-sugar measures, and most participants with prediabetes returned to normal blood-sugar levels.2 These are trial-average secondary outcomes, not promises.

That is why prescribers talk about weight management as health management rather than appearance. Noting how your clothes fit, your energy, your sleep and your routine health readings gives you encouragement on weeks when the scales do not move. The wider science is explained in does GLP-1 help lose weight and how GLP-1 medicines make you lose weight.

10 · Getting prescriber support

Getting the right support

Regular clinical review is a useful support alongside Mounjaro. Your prescriber can adjust the dose, check side effects, review your other medicines and tell you when progress is on track. Our service includes a free online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, ongoing monthly clinical reviews, and side-effect support. Repeat orders re-check suitability, with no auto-shipping.

Mounjaro is also available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first. Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.45

Whichever route you take, use a registered pharmacy. We are GPhC-registered (9012878) and supply genuine KwikPens via official LillyDirect supply. Be wary of anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary.

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What can I take with Mounjaro to help lose weight?
You do not need to take anything extra. Mounjaro is licensed to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, so protein-rich meals, regular movement, sleep and honest tracking are the partners that matter. Supplements are optional, and your prescriber should know about any you use.
What supplements should you not take with Mounjaro?
There is no single banned list, so check each product with your prescriber or pharmacist. Be cautious with anything claiming to act on appetite, blood sugar or digestion, and avoid stimulant products, detox teas and boosters that make dramatic weight-loss claims. Their dosing is not standardised and they lack the evidence behind licensed medicines.
How to speed up weight loss on Mounjaro?
There is no safe shortcut. Progress is gradual by design and builds month by month, mostly from 5mg onward. Inject on schedule, eat enough protein, stay active, protect your sleep and limit alcohol. If you have not yet reached the maximum dose, ask your prescriber whether a step-up is appropriate.
What stops weight loss on Mounjaro?
Plateaus of a few weeks are normal as the body adapts. Common causes are portions drifting up, low protein, less activity, poor sleep, alcohol or being on a dose that is not yet high enough. Review those basics, then discuss a dose step-up with your prescriber. Never double doses or add unlicensed products.
What pills make you lose weight rapidly?
No over-the-counter pill is a safe, proven route to rapid weight loss, and products making dramatic claims should be treated with caution. Licensed options are prescription-only and need a clinical assessment. Even then, weight loss is gradual and works alongside diet and activity. Speak to a prescriber about what is suitable for you.
What is the best supplement for rapid weight loss?
No supplement is a substitute for prescribed treatment, and none is recommended for rapid weight loss. Low-cost products sold this way have no clinical oversight; they are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence. If you are considering one while on Mounjaro, speak to your prescriber or pharmacist first.
How long does it take to lose several stone on Mounjaro?
It depends on your starting weight, dose and habits, so no honest timescale applies to everyone. Trials measured results at 72 weeks, and early weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase. Think in months, judge progress by trend, and ask your prescriber to review your response regularly.
Can I take protein shakes or fibre with Mounjaro?
Protein shakes are a food product and can help if low appetite makes it hard to eat enough protein. Fibre supplements are sometimes used for constipation, but because Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, check with your prescriber or pharmacist before starting. Mention everything you take at your reviews.
