  • Anti-sickness medicines are a decision for your prescriber or pharmacist, so check before taking any remedy alongside Mounjaro.
  • If you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team promptly because dehydration needs attention.
  • A prescriber can hold your current dose for longer before stepping up if a new dose is hard to tolerate.
In this guide

01 · Start here

What to take for nausea from Mounjaro: what helps first

The first-line answer is food and fluid habits, not a tablet. Eat smaller meals slowly, stop at the first feeling of fullness, favour plain lower-fat foods while adjusting, stay well hydrated, and avoid lying down straight after eating.1

Practical ways to apply that: sip water through the day rather than gulping it with meals, choose dry or plain foods such as toast, rice, potato or plain chicken, and leave rich, fried or very sweet food for later. Eating more slowly matters because Mounjaro makes you feel full sooner.

You will find more ideas in our guides on helping nausea from Mounjaro and relieving Mounjaro nausea.

02 · Next step

Do you need medicine or a dose change?

If food changes are not enough, the next decision is for your prescriber or pharmacist. Anti-sickness medicines exist, but the right choice depends on your health, your other medicines and your symptoms. Your prescriber can tell you what suits you and what does not.

A dose adjustment is another option. If a new dose is hard to tolerate, prescribers can hold the current dose longer before stepping up — speak to your clinical team rather than pushing through severe symptoms.1 If you take Mounjaro through us, our team provides side-effect support and monthly reviews.

03 · Why it happens

Why is Mounjaro making me feel so sick?

Nausea happens because Mounjaro slows how quickly the stomach empties. Tirzepatide activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which help regulate appetite and slow stomach emptying.1 Food stays in the stomach longer, so large or rich meals can leave you feeling sick.

It is also the most common side effect. The most common — affecting more than 1 in 10 people — are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort.1 Feeling sick does not mean something is wrong with you or that you are reacting unusually.

In the weight-management trials, nausea was more frequent on tirzepatide than on placebo. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea were more common while the dose was being increased and became less frequent over time.1 Trial averages do not predict your own experience, and many people have little or none.

04 · How long it lasts

How long will nausea last on Mounjaro?

For most people it settles within days to a few weeks. Side effects are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose, and for most people they ease within days to a few weeks as the body adjusts.1

The usual pattern is that symptoms appear in the first days after starting or increasing a dose, peak early, and settle as your body adapts.1 This is one reason Mounjaro uses a gradual dose ladder. Expect the same pattern to repeat for a short while after each step up, usually milder as you go.

If it is not settling, tell your clinical team. They can slow down your titration rather than leaving you to cope. Our guides on easing Mounjaro nausea and treating Mounjaro nausea cover day-to-day coping.

05 · Remedies and tablets

Pepto Bismol, anti-sickness tablets and home remedies

Check with a pharmacist before taking any over-the-counter product alongside Mounjaro. That includes bismuth remedies such as Pepto Bismol, antacids, herbal products and supplements. A pharmacist can check them against your other medicines and your health history.

Prescription anti-sickness medicines may be an option, but they are not something to borrow from a friend or buy from an unregulated seller. Mounjaro can slow how the stomach empties, so what suits one person may not suit another. Ask your prescriber, who knows your full picture.

Simple comfort measures cost nothing and carry little risk: fresh air, sipping fluids, eating little and often, and sitting upright after meals. Avoid lying down straight after eating.

If you notice a new symptom, tell your prescriber. You can also report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19

06 · When to get help

When nausea needs medical attention

Get help if you cannot keep fluids down. If nausea or vomiting is persistent or you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs prompt attention.1

Some symptoms are more serious than ordinary nausea. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.1

Taking insulin or a sulfonylurea as well? Watch for low blood sugar, such as shakiness, sweating or confusion, because your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

07 · Eating to avoid it

What to eat on Mounjaro to avoid nausea

Plain, lower-fat food in small portions is the safest choice while your body adjusts.1 Think soups, eggs, yoghurt, toast, rice, fish and plain chicken rather than takeaways or creamy sauces.

Keep protein in your meals and stay hydrated, as eating less overall can leave you tired and constipated as well. A balanced diet matters because Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1

Stop eating at the first sign of fullness, even if there is food left. The wider picture on combating symptoms is in our guide to combating Mounjaro nausea. If you are weighing up stopping, read whether you can withdraw from Mounjaro.
