Weight Loss Drugs and Mental Health: What UK Patients Should Know (October 2026)

Regulators have looked at whether GLP-1 medicines are linked to low mood or suicidal thoughts. The EMA's safety committee concluded in 2024 that the evidence does not support a causal link, and the MHRA keeps this under continuous review. Any big change in weight, appetite and routine can affect how you feel.17 Tell your prescriber about any history of depression, and seek help promptly if your mood drops or you have distressing thoughts during treatment. If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. Tell your prescriber about any change in your mood while taking Mounjaro.

01 · Core answer

Do weight loss drugs affect mental health?

The EMA's safety committee reviewed the evidence and concluded in 2024 that it does not support a causal link between GLP-1 medicines and low mood or suicidal thoughts; the MHRA keeps this under continuous review. If you want the detail for tirzepatide, see our guides on Mounjaro and mental health and whether Mounjaro affects mental health.

02 · What regulators reviewed

What regulators reviewed

The EMA's safety committee reviewed the evidence on GLP-1 medicines and suicidal thoughts and concluded in 2024 that it does not support a causal link.17 If your mood drops or you have distressing thoughts during treatment, seek help promptly and tell your prescriber. You can also report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19 Our page on Mounjaro mental health side effects goes further.

03 · Why mood can shift

Why mood can shift on treatment

Several things can change at once: eating patterns, body shape, social comments and daily routine. Our guides on whether Mounjaro helps mental health and brain health and weight loss injections explore this area.

04 · Stopping treatment

What happens when you stop?

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system.1 Stopping should always be planned with your prescriber.

05 · Other medicines

Mental health medicines and weight

If you take any, tell your prescriber, and do not change them yourself. See what mental health medications cause weight loss.

06 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1 If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger.

How ordering works

How ordering works at EverydayMeds

Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.

  1. EverydayMeds online consultation on a mobile phone

    Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes

Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.

  2. A clinician ready to review an online consultation

Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day

A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.

  3. An EverydayMeds delivery box

    Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.
