A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is made by Eli Lilly and supplied to UK pharmacies through Lilly's official distribution.
  • In SURMOUNT-1, average weight loss at 72 weeks was 15% on 5mg and 20.9% on 15mg; individual results vary.
  • If you want treatment rather than shares, a first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99).
  • Fake weight-loss pens are a real risk; only buy from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register.
In this guide

01 · Straight answer

What we can and cannot say about weight loss drug stocks

Share prices depend on earnings, regulation, competition and sentiment, none of which we can forecast. Any article that names a sure winner is offering an opinion, not a fact.

What we can do is explain the medicines that companies in this area sell. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injection made by Eli Lilly.1 It is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. If you are researching the sector, understanding the product, its supply chain and its pricing gives you far better context than a ticker symbol. We have also written about GLP-1 drug stocks and weight loss medication stocks from the same medicines-first angle.

None of this is a reason to buy or sell any share. Past performance of any company tells you nothing certain about the future, and you should speak to a regulated financial adviser before investing.

02 · Treatment

If you want the treatment rather than the shares

A Mounjaro pen lasts four weeks, and the Mounjaro pen starts at £169.99 per month for the 2.5mg dose. A new customer saves £40 on their first order at any dose with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25). Your first 2.5mg pen therefore costs £129.99 with the code. Switching to us at 15mg? Your first order is £289.99.

Across the UK pharmacies we track, the cheapest and dearest Mounjaro pens at any dose are £143.96 and £339.00 per month (checked 12 October 2026). The gap between providers for the same dose ranges from £27 to £41, so comparing is worthwhile.

03 · Planning

What a year of treatment costs

Treatment is a series of four-week pens, so it helps to see the whole year. These figures are standard prices; a new customer's first order is £40 less and every later order is £25 less.

StagePensStandard cost
First year, settling at 5mg13£2,711.88
First year, settling at 15mg13£3,599.88
Monthly at 7.5mg1£279.99
Monthly at 10mg1£290.99
Monthly at 12.5mg1£319.99

A first year costs £2,711.88 if you settle at 5mg, up to £3,599.88 at 15mg. Our consultation is free, the price shown is the price paid, and there are no subscriptions. You can pay by Visa, Mastercard or Klarna, and pay-monthly options are available.

04 · Ordering

How ordering works

Ordering takes three steps. First, complete the free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Second, a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it; payment is taken when you place the order, and if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Third, our registered pharmacy dispenses the pen, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm and free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99.

Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order. Our prescribing team runs ongoing monthly reviews and repeat orders re-check suitability, with no auto-shipping. You can also browse all weight loss treatments to see the wider range.

05 · What the product is

What Mounjaro is and who makes it

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly.1 In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen, called a KwikPen, in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.

Other companies make other medicines in the category, and the Wegovy pen, for example, is a semaglutide product.

A pen is designed around four weekly doses.

Eli Lilly's role goes beyond manufacture. Genuine UK stock is supplied through Lilly's official distribution to licensed pharmacies, and every pen carries a batch number and expiry date that can be checked.13 Our own supply is official LillyDirect supply, meaning Mounjaro direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, with all six doses stocked from 2.5mg to 15mg.

If you are reading this because you have seen headlines about weight loss medicines, the practical point is that this is a prescription-only category. You cannot simply buy a pen. It is supplied only after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, who assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines.1

Treatment is intended to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. It is not a substitute for those habits, and individual results vary. That framing matters for investors and patients alike: demand for a medicine is shaped by how it is used in real clinical practice, not just by headline trial numbers.

Finally, the product is the same wherever it is legitimately sourced: the same active ingredient, in the same six pen strengths, under the same licence. What differs between providers is price, service and aftercare, which is why we focus on those when we compare.

06 · How it works

How tirzepatide works

Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1.1 Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.

This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide, sold as Wegovy and Ozempic. We would not use the word powerful, because individual response varies and the right medicine depends on your health and goals. A fair statement is that tirzepatide works on two receptors where semaglutide works on one, and a prescriber can discuss which suits you.

Investors often hear the phrase GLP-1 as shorthand for a whole industry. Clinically, it is a hormone pathway, and the medicines that act on it differ in how they are dosed, how often they are injected and how they are tolerated. Some are weekly pens, such as Mounjaro and Wegovy. Liraglutide, sold as Saxenda and in other products, is a daily injection supplied at 6mg per millilitre.

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4 to 5 weeks to clear the system.1 There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears. This is useful to know if you ever pause treatment, because effects do not stop on the day of the last injection.

Because the medicine slows stomach emptying, it can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 Anyone who takes insulin or a sulfonylurea should also let the prescriber know, as doses of those medicines may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar.

None of this makes the medicine suitable for everyone. It is prescribed after assessment, and the prescriber decides whether it fits your history. If you notice any new symptom while on treatment, discuss it with your prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19

For readers interested in what happens in the first weeks, our one-month before and after guide sets out realistic expectations without overstating results.

07 · The trial evidence

What the SURMOUNT-1 trial found

In SURMOUNT-1, a trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, and individual results vary.

As a worked example, for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. That is simple arithmetic on the trial average and does not predict your own result. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.

The same trial reported how many people reached particular thresholds. At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2

Why does this matter for investors? Because efficacy data is one of the things markets watch, and it is easy to misread. A headline percentage is an average across a trial population, not a forecast for any individual.

Only SURMOUNT-5 supports a direct comparison of tirzepatide with semaglutide, because that trial compared them directly.15 Other semaglutide results, such as those from STEP 1, come from different trials with different populations, so reading them side by side is unreliable.9

For a patient, the useful takeaway is more modest than any headline. Higher doses were associated with larger average weight loss in this trial, but dose is chosen by your prescriber based on how you tolerate treatment and how you respond.

If you are weighing this up for yourself rather than as an investment, the most reliable next step is a conversation with a prescriber who can look at your BMI, health conditions and medicines. Our free consultation is designed for that purpose, and it carries no obligation.

08 · NHS versus private

NHS access versus private prescribing

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years.4 NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40 and above with four or more qualifying conditions.6 Full rollout is expected to take years.

That phasing is a major reason many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

The licence itself is wider than the NHS criteria. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.1 It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable for you. That assessment is the same principle whether treatment is NHS or private: the medicine is prescription-only, and the decision rests with a clinician.

For private treatment, the route is a free online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Once treatment starts, our team provides monthly reviews, dose titration, follow-up assessments and side-effect support.

Wegovy sits differently on the NHS: access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services, so ask your GP. The NHS prescription charge in England is £9.90 for items that attract one, but this is a separate matter from the private price of a pen, which we show live on our product page.

The honest summary is that the NHS is expanding access in stages, and private prescribing offers an option now for people who meet the licence. Neither route is a shortcut around assessment, and both depend on a clinician agreeing that treatment is appropriate for you.

09 · The UK price rise

The UK list-price increase explained

Eli Lilly announced a UK list-price increase for Mounjaro on 14 August 2025, effective 1 September 2025.

This is the kind of event that moves share-price conversation, but for patients it changed monthly costs. Pharmacy sell prices vary because of confidential discounts, so the list price is a reference point rather than what any one pharmacy charges. Our own prices are shown live on the product page, and you can see the starting figure of £169.99 per month for the 2.5mg pen.

Why do prices differ so much between providers? List price is only one input. Providers set their own margins, and confidential discounts differ. Across the UK pharmacies we track, the smallest and largest gaps between providers for the same dose run from £27 to £41. The cheapest and dearest starting pens (2.5mg) are £143.96 and £179.99. Boots' lowest and highest Mounjaro dose prices are £179.00 and £339.00. These index figures were checked 12 October 2026.

Our pricing is described plainly. The standard price of each pen is shown by dose: £169.99 at 2.5mg, £218.99 at 5mg, £279.99 at 7.5mg, £290.99 at 10mg, £319.99 at 12.5mg and £329.99 at 15mg, each per month. Weekly equivalents are £42.50, £54.75, £70.00, £72.75, £80.00 and £82.50 per week.

A new customer saves £40 on their first order with code FIRST40, and every later order is £25 off the standard price (code DOSE25). The consultation is free and the price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees.

For comparison with another medicine, the first-order price of the Wegovy starting pen is £99.99.

10 · Fakes and genuine supply

Counterfeit pens and how to buy safely

The MHRA has seized thousands of fake weight-loss pens in the UK and has issued alerts after falsified Mounjaro pens were identified.7 Fake pens have caused hospitalisations, and some contained insulin rather than tirzepatide. This is the downside of a booming market, and it matters more to your health than any share price.

Only buy from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register, never from social media, beauty salons or unverified websites.12 Genuine treatment always involves a prescription and a clinical consultation. Anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription is a warning sign. Our GPhC registration number is 9012878.

Genuine UK stock is supplied through Lilly's official distribution to licensed pharmacies, and every pen carries a batch number and expiry date that can be checked.13 A genuine pen arrives cold-chain packaged, and the solution inside is clear and colourless.

Do not use a pen that has been frozen, looks cloudy or discoloured, has particles in it, is past its expiry, or has been above 30°C. An in-use pen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away. If supply or packaging ever seems wrong, check the pharmacy on the GPhC register and contact the pharmacy before injecting. For unopened pens, store them in the fridge until first use and they keep until the printed expiry date; for any other out-of-fridge question, check the patient information leaflet and ask the pharmacy.

Our supply is official LillyDirect supply, with genuine KwikPens delivered free next day in discreet, temperature-controlled DPD packaging. Support is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, through the account portal chat or on 0333 207 0413.

If a pen is faulty, damaged or the wrong item, contact us within 3 days. Dispensed prescription medicines cannot otherwise be returned. Refunds take 5 to 10 working days, and declined consultations are refunded automatically in full.

The rule of thumb is simple: a price that looks too good, a seller who skips the consultation, or packaging that feels wrong are all reasons to stop. A legitimate saving comes from comparing registered pharmacies, not from unverified sellers.

11 · Unsafe shortcuts

Managing the cost of treatment safely

What are safer ways to manage cost? Start by comparing providers, since the gap between them for the same dose can be material. Use the new-customer discount on your first order and the automatic reorder discount afterwards. Choose pay-monthly options or Klarna if spreading payment helps, noting that there are no subscriptions and no auto-shipping.

If you are uncertain about timing, contact the prescribing team. Our aftercare includes ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and side-effect support, so you do not have to work these decisions out alone.

In short, the only way to use the medicine is the way it is licensed: one weekly dose, four doses per pen, under prescriber guidance.

12 · Cheaper alternatives

Alternatives, supplements and the poor man's Ozempic

The phrase poor man's Ozempic is marketing, not a medical term. It is usually applied to low-cost supplements such as berberine, sometimes called nature's Ozempic. These are available cheaply without assessment and come with no clinical oversight, and their dosing is not standardised.

Over-the-counter weight loss pills are a question we answer with caution. Products sold without a prescription are not assessed by a prescriber for your health conditions or medicines. If a seller makes dramatic weight-loss claims, treat that as a reason for scepticism.

What is a cheaper alternative to Ozempic? Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes only, and a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply it for weight loss; the licensed weight-management options are Mounjaro and Wegovy, and a prescriber decides what suits you. Wegovy is a once-weekly semaglutide pen with pens of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg, stepping up after at least 4 weeks and reaching the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17.18 Liraglutide, sold as Saxenda and in other products, is a daily injection at 6mg per millilitre.

Whether any of these is cheaper for you depends on dose and provider, so compare current prices rather than assuming. A new customer's first Wegovy starting pen is £99.99, and a new customer's first 2.5mg Mounjaro pen is £129.99 with code FIRST40.

Older medicines also feature in the history of the category. Our pages on the fen-fen weight loss drug and the Belviq weight loss drug explain why safety scrutiny matters, and it is a useful reminder that investor enthusiasm and patient safety are different things.

If you are following the share-price story, our related guides to GLP-1 stocks to buy today and GLP1 stocks take the same medicines-first approach, and neither offers financial advice.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Which weight loss drug stocks are the most promising?
Share prices depend on earnings, regulation and competition, which nobody can forecast reliably. If you are thinking of investing, speak to a regulated financial adviser. What we can explain is the medicine itself, such as Mounjaro, which Eli Lilly makes, and how UK supply and prices work.
What are the best weight loss drug stocks to buy right now?
We do not recommend any shares and cannot tell you what to buy now. Investment decisions depend on your finances, risk tolerance and goals, and you should take regulated advice. Our expertise is clinical and pharmacy-based: we can explain how Mounjaro works, who is licensed to use it and how to buy it safely from a verified UK pharmacy.
Which pharma companies make weight loss drugs?
Eli Lilly makes Mounjaro, the once-weekly tirzepatide pen, and genuine UK stock is supplied through Lilly's official distribution to licensed pharmacies. Other companies make other medicines in the category, including semaglutide products such as Wegovy and liraglutide products such as Saxenda. Our own Mounjaro supply comes through official LillyDirect supply.
Can I buy Ozempic shares?
Ozempic is a medicine brand, not a company, so you cannot buy shares in it directly. Shares are issued by the companies that make medicines, and any decision to invest should follow regulated financial advice. We cannot guide that decision. If you are interested in the medicine rather than the shares, semaglutide, sold as Wegovy and Ozempic, works on one gut-hormone receptor, while Mounjaro's tirzepatide activates two: GIP and GLP-1.
What is more powerful than Ozempic?
We would not use the word powerful, because individual response varies. Tirzepatide works on two receptors, GIP and GLP-1, where semaglutide works on one. A prescriber can advise which medicine suits your health and goals.
What is known as the poor man's Ozempic?
The label is applied to low-cost supplements such as berberine, sometimes marketed as nature's Ozempic. It is a marketing phrase, not a medical one. These products are available cheaply without assessment, have no clinical oversight and their dosing is not standardised. If you want a licensed option, a prescriber can assess you after a consultation.
What is a cheaper alternative to Ozempic?
Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes only, and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label. The licensed weight-management options are Mounjaro and Wegovy, and a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply Ozempic for weight loss. Mounjaro starts at £169.99 per month for the 2.5mg pen, and a new customer's first 2.5mg pen is £129.99 with code FIRST40.
What is the number one over-the-counter weight loss pill?
We do not name one. Products sold without a prescription are not assessed by a prescriber against your health conditions or medicines, and supplements marketed with dramatic weight-loss claims deserve scepticism. Licensed weight-management medicines such as Mounjaro are prescription-only and supplied after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Our consultation is free and carries no obligation, so you can find out whether treatment is suitable for you.
