A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Prescription weight loss drugs in the UK are medicines supplied only after a prescriber has assessed your BMI, health history and current medicines.
-
Mounjaro is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 30 with a weight-related condition.
-
NHS access to Mounjaro is being phased in over several years, so many eligible people choose regulated private treatment.
-
Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
-
Results build over months alongside diet and activity; trial averages do not predict your own result.
In this guide
01 · How it works
How a weight loss drug prescription works
A weight loss drug prescription starts with an assessment, not a purchase. Prescription-only weight loss medicines can only be supplied once a prescriber has checked that the treatment is suitable and safe for you.
For Mounjaro (tirzepatide), the licence covers adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Qualifying conditions include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1
A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it suits you.11 At EverydayMeds that review is done by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. You can start with our free online consultation.
02 · Cost
What a private prescription costs
The medicine is the main cost, because the consultation is free and the price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees. Each Mounjaro pen holds four weekly doses, so the price is per month.
Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99). A new customer gets £40 off their first order at any dose, including people switching to us at a higher dose. If you switch at 15mg, your first order is £289.99. Every later order is £25 off the standard price (code DOSE25).
Standard monthly prices rise with the dose: £218.99 for 5mg, £279.99 for 7.5mg, £290.99 for 10mg, £319.99 for 12.5mg and £329.99 for 15mg. All six strengths are in stock.
| Planning window | Pens | Standard-price total |
|---|---|---|
| First year if you settle at 5mg | 13 | £2,711.88 |
| First year if you settle at 15mg | 13 | £3,599.88 |
These totals are at standard prices before discounts. A new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less.
03 · NHS vs private
NHS or private: the honest picture
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40 or above with four or more qualifying conditions.46
Full rollout is expected to take years. That is why many people who meet the licensed criteria but not yet the NHS stage choose regulated private treatment. If you may qualify for NHS care, ask your GP. Private treatment is a legitimate alternative, not a shortcut around clinical checks.
04 · Ordering
How ordering works
Ordering takes three stages, and each one involves a person checking your suitability.
- Free online consultation: a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation.
- Prescriber review: a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers. If the order is unsuitable it is refunded automatically.
- Dispensing and delivery: our registered pharmacy dispenses it, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm and free next-day tracked delivery in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99.
Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order. Ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and follow-up assessments are handled by our prescribing team. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and there is no auto-shipping. You can pay by Visa, Mastercard or Klarna, with pay-monthly options and no subscriptions.
05 · Prescription options compared
Prescription weight loss drugs compared
Several prescription medicines are used for weight management in the UK, and they differ in how they are taken.
| Medicine | How it is taken | What is known |
|---|---|---|
| Mounjaro (tirzepatide) | Once-weekly pen injection | Six strengths from 2.5mg to 15mg; activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors1 |
| Wegovy (semaglutide) injection | Once-weekly injection | Steps through 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg and 1.7mg to a 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 1718 |
| Wegovy tablets (semaglutide) | Once-daily oral tablet | Taken on an empty stomach after fasting for at least 8 hours, swallowed whole with a sip of water (up to half a glass, about 120ml), then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other tablets |
| Foundayo (orforglipron) | Oral tablet | Once-daily tablet made by Eli Lilly; can be taken at any time of day, with or without food, swallowed whole |
| Liraglutide (Saxenda, Erly) | Daily injection | Supplied at 6mg per millilitre |
| Orlistat | Oral capsule | Figures vary — your prescriber can advise |
SURMOUNT-5 is the first large head-to-head trial of tirzepatide and semaglutide for weight loss.15 You can browse every option on our weight loss treatments page.
Wegovy's NHS access runs through specialist weight-management services, so ask your GP. A prescriber chooses between these medicines based on your health, preferences and tolerance.
06 · Who makes Mounjaro
Weight loss drug manufacturers and makers
Mounjaro is made by Eli Lilly, and we supply it through official LillyDirect supply direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution. Every pen is a genuine KwikPen, and all six doses from 2.5mg to 15mg are stocked.1
If you read about a drug in development, treat the news as news, not as a treatment you can obtain. A medicine can only be prescribed for weight loss in the UK once it is licensed here.
Medicines still in development are not available through any legitimate UK pharmacy. Anyone offering to supply one without a consultation or prescription is a warning sign, not an opportunity.
07 · Questions about other drugs
Retatrutide, unlicensed sellers and older drugs
Be very wary of any seller offering a weight loss product without a consultation or prescription.
Retatrutide: this is a medicine in development with no UK licence, and we do not supply it. If a website offers it for sale, treat that as a counterfeit or unlicensed risk.
Older drugs: products from earlier decades have their own histories. We have separate guides on the fen-fen weight loss drug, the Belviq weight loss drug, the Meridia weight loss drug and the Adipex weight loss drug. They are background reading, not options we offer.
If you ever suspect a counterfeit product, report it through the MHRA. Side effects from any medicine can be reported through the Yellow Card scheme.719
08 · What results to expect
What results to expect on Mounjaro
In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks. People using lifestyle changes alone lost 3.1%.2 These are trial averages, individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.
At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20%.2 As a worked example, for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. Trial averages do not predict your own result.
Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest. Most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month. Think in months, not days, and judge progress by trend rather than individual weigh-ins.1
Your prescriber reviews your response. If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, they will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.
09 · Dose ladder
The dose ladder and first weeks
Everyone starts Mounjaro on 2.5mg once a week. This starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not about weight loss itself. After at least 4 weeks the dose increases to 5mg. It can then step up by 2.5mg at a minimum of 4-week intervals (7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg) to a maximum of 15mg weekly, depending on response and tolerance.1
Many people settle at 5mg, 10mg or 15mg. Higher is not automatically better, and your prescriber guides the pace.
Early experiences differ widely. Some people notice appetite change and early loss in week one, while others feel little until a higher dose, and both are normal. Early loss includes water weight. Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle.13 Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.
10 · Using the pen safely
Using the pen and storing it
Mounjaro is injected under the skin once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food. Licensed sites are the stomach area (at least 5cm from the belly button), the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm if someone else injects. Rotate the site each dose. Each KwikPen contains four weekly doses.13
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time. If more than 4 days have passed, skip it and take the next on your normal day. Never take two doses within 3 days of each other. You can change your injection day as long as at least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since your last dose.1
Keep pens in a fridge at 2–8°C and never freeze them. Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge not above 30°C for up to 30 days, then it should be discarded. Keep the cap on to protect it from light. Unopened pens stay in the fridge and keep until the printed expiry date.13
You can fly with Mounjaro. Carry pens in hand luggage, ideally in a cool bag with the prescription label or a copy of your prescription.13 Check destination rules before you travel.
11 · Buying safely
Buying a prescription weight loss drug safely
Buy only from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register. EverydayMeds is GPhC-registered (9012878), and you can check the entry on the GPhC register.
Be cautious of any seller offering to supply a prescription weight loss drug without a consultation or prescription. The MHRA issues counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting suspected side effects and fake products.7 Dramatic weight-loss claims, unusually low prices and no clinical questions are all warning signs.
There is also a difference between a prescription and a loophole. Our guide to GLP-1 without a doctor's prescription explains why skipping the assessment is risky. For a closer look at the product itself, see Mounjaro as a weight loss drug online in the UK.
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.
