Vitamin B12 Injections and Weight Loss: What the Evidence Says (October 2026)
Vitamin B12 injections do not cause weight loss on their own. They treat a diagnosed B12 deficiency, and we are not aware of reliable evidence that they burn fat or speed up metabolism in people whose levels are already normal. If deficiency has left you exhausted, correcting it may help you feel able to be active again, but that is an energy effect, not a fat-loss effect. Current as of October 2026.

The short version
B12 is an essential vitamin, and an injection is a sensible treatment when a clinician has confirmed you are short of it. Weight loss is a separate goal that needs a separate, evidence-based plan.

A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
B12 injections treat deficiency. They are not a licensed weight-loss treatment and do not melt fat.
-
If you are low in B12, treatment may restore energy, which can make healthy habits easier to keep up.
-
Dramatic weight-loss claims attached to B12 shots are marketing, not medicine.
-
Licensed options exist for adults who meet the criteria, assessed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.
In this guide
01 · The core answer
Do B12 injections help with weight loss?
No, not directly. Vitamin B12 is needed for normal body function, and a genuine deficiency can cause tiredness and low mood. Treating that deficiency can bring your energy back. It does not remove body fat, and it does not act on appetite the way a licensed weight-management medicine does.
This is why so many people ask whether B12 injections work for weight loss and then find mixed stories. The shot may help a tired person move more. The weight change, if any, comes from eating less or moving more, not from the vitamin. Our guide on whether B12 shots are a good idea goes into the marketing claims in more detail.
| Option | What it is for | Weight-loss role | Oversight |
|---|---|---|---|
| B12 injection for diagnosed deficiency | Correcting low B12 levels | Indirect at most, through restored energy | Prescribed after assessment by a clinician |
| B12 shots sold as fat burners | Marketed for metabolism and slimming | No reliable evidence of a fat-loss effect | Varies widely; often none |
| Over-the-counter supplements | General nutrition | Not a weight-loss treatment | Low-cost supplement, no clinical oversight |
| Mounjaro (tirzepatide) | Licensed for weight management in adults1 | Acts on appetite and stomach emptying1 | Online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber |
02 · Your next step
What should you do next?
Start by asking whether you have a reason to be low in B12. Persistent tiredness is worth raising with a GP or pharmacist, who can decide whether a blood test makes sense. Do not self-treat tiredness with injections bought from a seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription.
If your real goal is losing weight, look at treatments with a licence for it. Our weight loss clinic explains how assessment works, and the guide to Mounjaro and weight loss sets out what a licensed medicine does differently. Ready to compare doses and costs? The Mounjaro pen page shows live prices, and all doses are in stock. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99).
03 · Why people feel good after a shot
Why you might feel good after a B12 shot
If you were genuinely deficient, feeling better is plausible, because the vitamin you were missing is being replaced. Energy, concentration and mood are the areas people usually notice first, and the improvement tends to build over the following weeks rather than appearing in an instant.
If your levels were already normal, a lift in how you feel is harder to explain. Attention to your health, a fresh routine and positive expectation can all change how you feel. That is not the same as a metabolic effect.
Better sleep is the same story. If your sleep is poor, discuss it with a clinician rather than assuming a shot will fix it.
04 · Downsides and side effects
Is there a downside to B12 injections?
The main downsides are practical. An injection can leave a sore spot, and any needle carries a small chance of a local reaction. The bigger risk is indirect: relying on a shot for slimming means you may delay proper assessment of tiredness or put off treatment that has a real evidence base.
Always read the patient information leaflet for the exact product you are given, and tell the prescriber about allergies and other medicines. If you notice a new symptom after any injection, speak to a healthcare professional and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19
Pay attention to where a product comes from. Sellers who will supply injectables without a consultation or prescription are a safety concern in themselves, whatever the vitamin involved.
05 · How often and how quickly
How often should you get a B12 injection?
The schedule depends entirely on why it is prescribed, and it is set by the clinician treating you. Treatment for a deficiency often starts more intensively and then settles into a longer routine, depending on the cause and your test results.
Be wary of any programme promising a fixed daily or weekly slimming routine. Our page on daily B12 injection claims looks at why those schedules are not clinically based.
How quickly it works also varies. A person with a true deficiency may notice energy improving within the first few weeks. Someone with normal levels should not expect any change in weight, belly fat or appetite.
06 · Where the weight-loss myth comes from
Where the weight-loss myth comes from
The idea grew from clinics selling B12 as a metabolism booster, often bundled with other products. A person who is dieting, tired and being supported by a clinic may well lose weight, and the injection gets the credit. The reduced eating is doing the work.
Other add-ons make the picture murkier. Some programmes pair B12 with hormone-based diets, which we cover in our page on HCG and B12 combinations. Others use vague terms like vitamin boosters, and our guide to other vitamin B injections shows the same lack of evidence.
As for reviews: personal accounts online are not evidence that a product works, because nobody can separate the injection from diet, activity and expectation. For our wider overview, see the B12 injections and slimming guide.
07 · What licensed treatment does differently
What licensed treatment does differently
Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine licensed in the UK for weight management in adults.1 It activates the GIP and GLP-1 gut-hormone receptors, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1
That is a defined mechanism with trial evidence behind it, which B12 for slimming does not have. It also has real side effects. Most are digestive, and they are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose.1 Fatigue is a recognised common side effect, most noticeable in the first weeks and after dose increases.13
It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary. Treatment is supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. If you take the contraceptive pill, Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well it is absorbed. Switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method such as condoms, for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive.
08 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
09 · NHS and private routes
NHS and private routes to weight treatment
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the rollout began with the highest-need groups first.46
Many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. If you go that route, the consultation is free, and our prescribers review it.
Whichever route you take, an injection that treats a vitamin shortage and one that treats obesity are different tools. Match the tool to the problem.
How ordering works
How ordering works at EverydayMeds
Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.
Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes
Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.
Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day
A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.
Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery
Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.
Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.
Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.
