Tirzepatide and Glycine: What It Is and What We Know (October 2026)

Tirzepatide with glycine is a mixture of tirzepatide and the amino acid glycine, sometimes with a vitamin added, and it is not the licensed Mounjaro pen. Mounjaro is tirzepatide made by Eli Lilly and licensed in the UK for weight management and type 2 diabetes.1 The trial results behind it describe tirzepatide alone, not a blend. Current as of October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Tirzepatide with glycine is a blend of tirzepatide and an amino acid, sometimes sold with a vitamin added; it is not the licensed Mounjaro KwikPen.
  • The trial results for tirzepatide describe tirzepatide on its own, alongside diet and activity, not a mixture with glycine.
  • We supply genuine Mounjaro KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply, after a free consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.
  • If you are taking a mixture already, tell your prescriber and report any side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

What is tirzepatide with glycine?

Tirzepatide with glycine is tirzepatide combined with glycine, an amino acid, in a single preparation. It is sometimes sold with a vitamin added as well. It is not a product made by Eli Lilly, and it is not the same thing as a Mounjaro KwikPen.

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 The licensed pen contains tirzepatide and is supplied in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1

The glycine is added by whoever makes the mixture. It is not part of the manufacturer's product. We do not supply tirzepatide mixed with glycine or with any vitamin.

02 · Your decision

Should you look for tirzepatide with glycine?

For most readers, the sensible answer is no. The evidence that lets a prescriber predict what a medicine will do comes from trials of the licensed product. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, and individual results vary.

Those figures belong to tirzepatide on its own. Nobody can honestly transfer them to a blend, because the blend has not been tested in that trial.

You are probably in one of three positions:

  • You are curious. Read on.
  • You are already using a mixture. Do not stop or change anything on the strength of a web page. Speak to your prescriber or pharmacist, and report any side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.19
  • You want treatment that is regulated. Our weight loss clinic starts with a free consultation, and the Mounjaro pen starts at £169.99 for the 2.5mg strength. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40. Prices checked 11 October 2026.

03 · What glycine is claimed to do

What glycine is claimed to do alongside tirzepatide

Sellers who add glycine to tirzepatide usually say it helps protect lean muscle during weight loss. Some also say it helps with sleep, skin, or fat around the middle. These are marketing claims. None of them comes from the licensed product information.

It helps to separate three questions. Is glycine a real substance with a role in the body? Yes, it is an amino acid. Does that mean it improves the result of a weight-loss injection when mixed into the same vial? That does not follow. Has any claimed benefit been shown in the trials that licensed tirzepatide? No: the trials tested tirzepatide itself.2

A claim that sounds scientific is not the same as a claim that has been tested in the combination being sold. When a page tells you glycine "supports muscle", ask which study tested that exact mixture, in which people, and for how long. If the answer is vague, treat the claim as unproven.

04 · How tirzepatide works

How tirzepatide works without additives

Tirzepatide does its work through its own mechanism, with no help needed from an added amino acid. Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1

In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1 That is the effect behind the trial results. Nothing in this description depends on glycine.

This also answers a common question: what does glycine do with tirzepatide? If a seller says otherwise, the claim has to be backed by evidence for that specific mixture.

The medicine works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 Eating enough protein and staying active are decisions you make with your prescriber. Neither needs a blend.

05 · Risks of mixtures

The risks of buying a mixture

The main risk of a tirzepatide and glycine mixture is that you cannot be sure what is in the vial. A licensed pen is made to a defined standard and checked by regulators. A mixture sold outside that route is a different matter, and you are relying on the seller's word about content, strength and cleanliness.

The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting suspected problems.7 Several practical warning signs are worth knowing:

  • A seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription.
  • A product with no clear manufacturer, batch information or leaflet.
  • Dramatic weight-loss claims or promises of specific results.
  • A brand name used loosely for something Eli Lilly did not make.

Dosing is a second concern. The licensed pen has a defined strength ladder. A mixture may state its strength differently, which makes it hard to follow a prescriber's titration plan.

If you have used a product like this and feel unwell, seek medical advice and report it. You can report a side effect even if you are unsure the product caused it.19

06 · Cobalamin and other add-ons

Cobalamin and other add-ons

Glycine is often sold together with cobalamin, the vitamin many people know as vitamin B12. Whether the medicine needs such an addition is a separate question from whether a seller wants to add one.

If you wonder about nutrient levels, see using the vitamin and Mounjaro together. A related blend is covered in our page on tirzepatide with pyridoxine.

The shared theme is simple. A vitamin or amino acid can be bought and discussed on its own with a pharmacist. Mixing it into the injection itself is the part that removes the checks. If you think you may be short of a nutrient, ask your prescriber; do not assume an additive in the vial is the answer. The patient information leaflet for the licensed pen is the place to read about the medicine as supplied.13

07 · Muscle and body composition

Muscle, belly fat and appearance

People ask whether glycine helps with belly fat or with how your face looks during weight loss.

SURMOUNT-1 reported weight lost as a share of body weight. At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2 These are trial averages and individual results vary.

Those figures say nothing about where on the body the loss came from, and they say nothing about glycine. Worry about muscle is reasonable and worth raising with your prescriber, who can talk about diet, protein and resistance activity. A product page cannot settle it.

Research on newer ways to protect muscle during weight loss is ongoing for other medicines. Our page on bimagrumab and tirzepatide explains how to think about those studies without overstating them.

08 · Licensed supply and unbranded

Licensed supply versus compounded versions

The licensed route is a Mounjaro KwikPen made by Eli Lilly, prescribed after a consultation. The mixture route is a product assembled by someone else. These are not interchangeable, even when both contain tirzepatide.

Our pages on unbranded tirzepatide and on whether tirzepatide is patented cover both in plain language.

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions). Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.4

09 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Why add glycine to tirzepatide?
Sellers add glycine mainly as a marketing extra, saying it supports muscle or recovery during weight loss. If a claim matters to you, ask your prescriber about it.
What is the difference between tirzepatide and tirzepatide glycine?
Tirzepatide is the active medicine in the licensed Mounjaro KwikPen made by Eli Lilly. Tirzepatide glycine is a mixture assembled by someone else, with the amino acid added. The trial results and product information describe tirzepatide alone, so they cannot be assumed to apply to the blend.
How long does glycine tirzepatide take to work?
A mixture has not been tested as a combination, so no timescale can be given for it. For the licensed medicine, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet. Your prescriber can explain what to expect as your dose is stepped up.
What are the side effects of taking tirzepatide glycine?
We do not supply a mixture, so ask your prescriber or pharmacist about it. For the licensed pen, the most common side effects, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort, and they are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, pain in the upper right abdomen with fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes, or signs of a severe allergic reaction. For other new or lasting symptoms, tell your prescriber and report them through the Yellow Card scheme.
What supplements should I avoid taking with tirzepatide?
Tell your prescriber and pharmacist about every supplement you take, including amino acids and vitamins, so they can check suitability. Be especially wary of low-cost supplements making dramatic weight-loss claims, because they have no clinical oversight and dosing is not standardised.
Is there a downside to taking glycine?
Glycine on its own is a common amino acid, and we make no claims about it as a stand-alone supplement. The concern is the mixture: you cannot verify what is in a vial sold outside the licensed route. Ask a pharmacist before adding any supplement alongside a prescription medicine.
Does glycine help with belly fat?
Trial results for tirzepatide describe overall body weight, alongside diet and activity, and individual results vary. A prescriber can discuss realistic expectations and the role of nutrition and exercise.
What does glycine do for your face?
If you notice facial changes during weight loss, discuss them with your prescriber rather than relying on a supplement claim.
What are people saying about GLP-1 with glycine in reviews?
Online reviews are not evidence of safety or effect. Rely on the product information, your prescriber and regulators such as the MHRA instead.
