01 · The short answer
Which appetite suppressants can you get in the UK?
The licensed options are weight-management medicines that work on gut hormones, and a prescriber decides what suits you. In the UK, the licensed weight-management injections are Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg). Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are newer licensed tablet options. All are prescription-only, and none can be bought off a shelf.1
Mounjaro is a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. It is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors at once.1 Together these help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.13
| Type of product | How it works | Evidence and oversight |
|---|---|---|
| Mounjaro (tirzepatide) | Weekly injection activating GIP and GLP-1 receptors | Licensed; large trials; prescriber-reviewed |
| Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg) | Weekly injection activating the GLP-1 receptor | Licensed; large trials; prescriber-reviewed |
| Wegovy tablets, Foundayo | Daily oral gut-hormone medicines | Licensed, prescription-only; separate trial programmes |
| Orlistat | Blocks some dietary fat absorption | Licensed; smaller average losses |
| Berberine and "natural Ozempic" products | Marketing claims only | Not medicines for this use; no comparable trial evidence; low-cost supplement, no clinical oversight |
| Research peptides and compounded copies | Unregulated | No UK licence for this use, no safety data, no regulated supply chain |
Orlistat is a different kind of product: it does not suppress appetite at all. It blocks some dietary fat absorption and produces smaller average losses.18 Other licensed options include Saxenda (liraglutide), a daily injection supplied at a concentration of 6mg/ml.
02 · Your next step
Is a strong appetite suppressant right for you?
A prescription medicine is worth considering if you are an adult who meets the licensed weight-management criteria and has struggled to manage constant hunger or "food noise" with diet alone. These medicines are used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.1
If you are curious about the route, our guide to a prescription appetite suppressant explains the consultation. If you are comparing pharmacies, see how an appetite suppressant pharmacy should operate before you hand over any health details.
When you are ready, the Mounjaro pen starts with a free online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99), and every later order is £25 off the standard price (code DOSE25). Our wider weight loss clinic page covers the full service.
03 · How prescription suppressants work
How prescription appetite suppressants work
Prescription gut-hormone medicines work by copying natural signals that tell the brain you have eaten. They do not stimulate the body in the way old-style diet pills did. Instead, they turn down hunger and slow digestion, so you feel satisfied sooner.
Tirzepatide activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.13 This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic).1
Mounjaro comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1 Treatment starts at 2.5mg and is stepped up gradually.
Strength does not mean speed. A higher dose is not a stronger version you should reach for sooner; stepping up is paced by tolerance and your prescriber's judgement.
04 · What the trials show
What the trial evidence shows
Controlled trials give the most reliable measure of how well a medicine works. Trial averages do not predict your own result, and individual results vary.
In the first large head-to-head trial (SURMOUNT-5), adults on tirzepatide lost on average 20.2% of body weight over 72 weeks versus 13.7% on semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy).15 Both are effective, licensed treatments; which suits you depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice, not the headline number alone.15
As a worked example only: for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.2% is about 20 kg. That is simple arithmetic on a trial average, not a forecast for you.
In the STEP 1 trial, adults on semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy) lost on average 14.9% of body weight over 68 weeks, compared with 2.4% on placebo.9 That is a separate trial, so its figures should not be set beside the SURMOUNT-5 numbers as if they were head to head.
No supplement has a trial record like this. That gap, rather than any marketing label, is the real difference between licensed medicines and supplements.
The same trials report side effects. In STEP 1, gastrointestinal side effects were reported by 74.2% of people on semaglutide 2.4mg, compared with 47.9% on placebo. 7.0% stopped treatment because of side effects, compared with 3.1% on placebo.9 Appetite effects come with real tolerability trade-offs, which is why a prescriber reviews you first.
05 · Natural and over-the-counter options
Natural and over-the-counter appetite suppressants
Natural and over-the-counter products have no robust trial evidence behind them.
"Natural GLP-1" supplements, such as berberine, are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence.18 They are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight, and their dosing is not standardised. Products sold as "nature's Ozempic" or the "poor man's Ozempic" borrow a famous name without the evidence.
Some simple habits can help with fullness at the table, though they are not substitutes for treatment: protein and fibre at meals, regular meal timing, enough sleep, and drinking water. These are general lifestyle points, not claims that any food mimics a prescription medicine.
Traditional and herbal ideas get a lot of attention too. Our pages on an Ayurveda appetite suppressant and on L-phenylalanine and appetite look at specific claims in more detail. If your problem is the reverse, see our explainer on the opposite of an appetite suppressant.
Orlistat is a licensed tablet, but it works on fat absorption rather than hunger, and it produces smaller average losses.18
06 · Tablets and Mounjaro
Is there a tablet equivalent to Mounjaro?
There is no tablet form of Mounjaro; tirzepatide is injection-only in the UK.1 Two GLP-1 weight-loss tablets are now licensed in the UK: Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide, made by Novo Nordisk), approved by the MHRA in June 2026, and Foundayo (orforglipron, made by Eli Lilly), approved in August 2026.2021
They are different medicines from Mounjaro, with their own dosing, eligibility checks and trial results, and both are prescription-only. Their trial results should not be read against Mounjaro's as if they were head to head.
If you currently use another gut-hormone medicine, do not combine it with Mounjaro. There is no licensed direct conversion between semaglutide and tirzepatide. Switching is done under prescriber supervision: typically the previous medicine is stopped, a washout interval observed, and Mounjaro started at a dose your prescriber judges appropriate, often the 2.5mg starting dose, sometimes adjusted based on your history. Never run two GLP-1 medicines together.
07 · Scams and stacking
The warning signs of an unsafe "extra strong" product
Mounjaro must not be combined with other GLP-1 medicines, unlicensed "research" peptides (such as retatrutide, which has no UK licence), or compounded copies. These combinations have no safety data and no regulated supply chain. If something promises faster results outside a licensed pathway, that is the warning sign.
Practical red flags include a seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription, dramatic weight-loss claims, vague "proprietary blends", and social-media sellers with no pharmacy registration. A genuine UK pharmacy appears on the GPhC register. Ours is GPhC 9012878, and you can check it on the GPhC register.
Our Mounjaro comes through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, as genuine KwikPens. If you suspect a counterfeit or have a side effect, report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.7
08 · Safety for women
Safety points for women considering an appetite suppressant
Several points apply specifically to women, and a prescriber will ask about them in your consultation. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.
Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. This applies to the pill only — implants, coils and injections are unaffected.7
Current prescribing information indicates minimal transfer of tirzepatide into breast milk; discuss breastfeeding with your prescriber so the decision reflects your circumstances.
Mounjaro is not licensed specifically for PCOS, but many women with PCOS meet the licensed weight-management criteria, and weight loss itself is a first-line recommendation that can improve insulin resistance, cycles and symptoms. Mention PCOS and any fertility plans in your consultation, because improving weight can restore ovulation.
09 · NHS and private routes
Getting a strong appetite suppressant: NHS or private?
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
Privately, the process is short. First, you complete a free online consultation, a brief health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Second, a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it; payment is taken when you place the order, and if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Third, our registered pharmacy dispenses and dispatches, with same-day dispatch when you order by 3pm, and free next-day tracked delivery in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging.
Ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and side-effect support are included, and repeat orders re-check suitability with no auto-shipping. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order. You can pay by Visa or Mastercard, Klarna or pay-monthly options, and there is no subscription. All six doses are in stock.
Costs differ by dose. A first year (13 pens) costs £2,711.88 at standard prices if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg; a new customer's first order is £40 less and every later order £25 less. Across the UK pharmacies we track, Mounjaro pens ranged from £143.96 to £339.00 per month as of 10 October 2026.
10 · Storage and stopping
Storing Mounjaro and what happens if you stop
Unopened pens are kept in the fridge at 2–8°C until first use and keep until the printed expiry date. Once in use, a KwikPen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away. Do not use a pen that has been above 30°C or has been frozen. For anything beyond that, check the patient information leaflet or ask the pharmacy.13
Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 Stopping should always be planned with your prescriber. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average.
Treatment is not a quick fix. Because it is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, the habits you build while appetite is quieter matter once the medicine is reduced or stopped.
11 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1 Mood: regulators have looked at whether GLP-1 medicines are linked to low mood or suicidal thoughts, and the EMA concluded in 2024 that the evidence does not support a causal link.
If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. Tell your prescriber about any change in your mood while taking Mounjaro.
