A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a licensed, once-weekly injection that activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, to support appetite control.
  • In the pivotal obesity trial, average weight loss rose with dose over 72 weeks. Trial averages do not predict your own result.
  • A full range of pen strengths lets your prescriber step the dose up gradually and settle on what suits you.
  • Access is available on the NHS in phases, or privately after a free online consultation with a GPhC-registered prescriber.
  • The pros come with limits: it works alongside diet and activity, side effects occur, and the medicine is not suitable for everyone.

01 · The verdict

Is Mounjaro worth considering? The pros in plain terms

Mounjaro is worth discussing with a prescriber if you have a medical reason to lose weight and have struggled to do so with diet and activity alone. Its advantages are real and well documented, but they apply to people who use it as intended: alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly.1 In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1

The pros fall into five groups. The first is how it works, with a dual-action mechanism that is unusual in this class. The second is the size of average weight loss seen in the main trial. The third is practical: a single weekly injection and a pen designed for self-use. The fourth is flexibility, because the dose can be stepped up gradually and adjusted. The fifth is access, through the NHS in phases or through regulated private care.

03 · Your next step

What to decide next

The question for most readers is not whether Mounjaro has advantages, but whether those advantages outweigh the limits for you personally. If you are unsure, our guide to the pros and cons of weight loss injections sets the whole class side by side.

If you are ready to go further, our weight loss clinic explains the full pathway. The consultation is free and reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, who will decide whether treatment is suitable. If you proceed, the Mounjaro pen starting dose is £169.99 per month at the standard price, and your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40. Every later order is £25 off the standard price. All doses are in stock.

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

Take your time with the decision. A good prescriber will be as willing to explain why treatment is not right as to approve it, and there is no obligation attached to a consultation.

04 · What it is

What Mounjaro is and why that counts as a pro

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly.1 In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1

The first genuine pro is the simplest: this is a licensed medicine with a clear evidence base and written product information. That distinguishes it from the many unregulated products marketed with dramatic weight-loss claims. A licensed medicine has a defined dose, a defined use, a patient information leaflet and a route for reporting side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19

The second pro is the format. A pre-filled pen means you do not draw up a dose from a vial. The pen is designed for self-injection, and needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance are included with every order from us. For people who dislike the idea of injecting, the practical reality is often gentler than expected, although you should follow the instructions in the pen's leaflet rather than relying on anyone's description of the technique.13

The third pro is the weekly rhythm. Because the medicine is taken once weekly, many people find it easier to fit into life than a daily routine. You choose a day, build a habit, and track it. Our free companion app, GLPTrackr, is available on iOS and Android if you want somewhere to record injections and progress.

What it is not

It is worth being clear about the limits of the label. Mounjaro is not a supplement, and it is not a shortcut that works regardless of what you eat. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something other than the licensed product.

It is also not an over-the-counter purchase. Because it is prescription-only, you need a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber before it can be supplied. That is a safeguard, and arguably a pro in itself: your medical history, current medicines and goals are reviewed before you receive a pen, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than shipping automatically.

The short version is that a similar name or a social media claim does not make a product the same medicine.

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

05 · Dual-action mechanism

The dual-action mechanism: its biggest scientific pro

Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1.1 Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In short, Mounjaro works with hormone pathways your gut already uses to signal fullness.

In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1 Many people who have tried to cut calories for years describe the constant pull of hunger as the main obstacle. A medicine that lowers that background pressure makes a reduced-calorie diet more achievable. It does not remove choice, and it does not do the work for you.

Why two receptors rather than one

This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action medicines such as semaglutide, which is sold as Wegovy and Ozempic.1 Individual response varies. What can be said is that the mechanism is genuinely different, and that is a legitimate reason to ask your prescriber which medicine suits you.

Three effects, one medicine

The mechanism covers three useful effects at once. Appetite regulation helps you feel satisfied. Slower stomach emptying means food stays with you for longer, which is part of why you feel full sooner. Improved insulin response is relevant to the medicine's licensed role in type 2 diabetes. For someone whose weight and blood sugar are linked, that overlap can be relevant, but only a clinician who knows your history can say how it applies to you.

Slower stomach emptying has another side that belongs in an honest account. The same effect that helps you feel full can also cause digestive side effects, particularly while the dose is rising. Details are in the patient information leaflet, and you should read it before starting.13 Report anything unexpected to your prescriber and through the Yellow Card scheme.19

What the mechanism does not explain

A mechanism describes how a medicine acts, not what will happen to you. If you notice a new symptom, tell your prescriber.

Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

06 · Trial weight loss

How much weight can you lose on Mounjaro? The trial evidence

The pivotal evidence behind the weight-loss pro comes from a large randomised trial. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 An average hides a spread: some people lose more than the headline, some less, and the trial figures describe a group, not a promise to you.

How to read the numbers fairly

The comparison that matters is between tirzepatide and lifestyle changes alone, since both groups received the same diet and exercise support. The gap between them is the effect attributable to the medicine.

The trial also reported how many people reached particular milestones. At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight.2 Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2

The dose pattern

The pattern across the doses is that average loss rose as the dose rose. That is a pro for people who need more from treatment, because the ladder gives room to move. It is also a reminder that the higher figures belong to higher doses, and not everyone needs or tolerates the top strength. Your prescriber will decide, with you, where to settle.

What the figures do not tell you

Real-world results depend on diet, activity, adherence, other medicines and your own biology. The figures also say nothing about how quickly any individual will lose weight.

Trial results for other medicines are not directly comparable with these. Different studies recruit different people and run for different lengths, so placing one trial's numbers beside another's can mislead. If you are choosing between medicines, ask your prescriber about the evidence for each, or read our comparison of weight loss injection pros and cons.

Individual results vary.

07 · Flexible dosing

Weekly dosing and a flexible dose ladder

Mounjaro's practical pros are the weekly schedule and the range of strengths. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1 Because the strengths are separate pens, your prescriber can raise the dose in measured steps and stop climbing when you reach a level that works for you.

Starting low is a feature

Treatment begins at the lowest strength. The starting pen exists so your body can adjust to the medicine before the dose rises. If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices; a new customer's first order is £40 less with code FIRST40, and every later order is £25 less.

This stepwise approach is a pro because it gives you and your prescriber several decision points. If a dose is working and well tolerated, you may not need to climb further. If it is not, there is room to go up. Neither outcome is a failure; it is how titration is designed to work.

Weekly rather than daily

Some alternatives in this broader field are daily injections. Liraglutide, for example, is a daily injection, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy. For people who prefer to think about their medicine once a week, that difference matters. For others, a daily rhythm is fine. The point is that preference is a legitimate factor, and weekly dosing is one of the reasons people choose Mounjaro.

Looking after the pen

Another practical advantage is that the in-use pen lasts a defined time out of the fridge. Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away. Unopened pens should be kept in the fridge at 2–8°C until first use, and they keep until the printed expiry date. Our deliveries use temperature-controlled packaging, and the pen's leaflet gives the full storage and injection instructions.13

Reviews as part of the package

Dose changes should not be a solo decision. Our service includes ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team, and side-effect support. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and there is no auto-shipping, so you stay in control of when each pen is sent.

If you want to understand what happens when treatment ends, the half-life of tirzepatide is about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system.1 There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.

Individual results vary.

08 · NHS and private access

Access: NHS in phases, or regulated private care

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years.6 NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.6

Why availability counts as a pro

Having two routes is a real advantage. The NHS pathway is the right place to start if you are in a group being prioritised now, and your GP can tell you where local services stand. The private pathway exists for people who are not yet reached by the rollout, or who prefer not to wait, and it runs through a registered pharmacy with a prescriber's review.

You can verify any UK online pharmacy yourself. We are GPhC-registered under number 9012878, and the public register lets you check that a pharmacy is genuine.12 That is worth doing wherever you buy, because counterfeit medicines are a documented risk, and the MHRA publishes alerts about them.7 Be wary of anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription.

What private supply gives you

We supply Mounjaro through official LillyDirect supply, sourced directly from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, as genuine KwikPens. All six strengths are stocked, and availability is shown live: all doses are currently in stock. The consultation is free, with no charge and no obligation. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.

Once approved, the pen is dispensed by our registered pharmacy, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm. Delivery is free, next-day and tracked with DPD in temperature-controlled, discreet packaging; Saturday delivery is £14.99.

The cost, stated plainly

Private treatment costs money, and that is a genuine limit. The standard price of the 2.5mg starting pen is £169.99 per month, and the 5mg pen is £218.99. A new customer's first order is £40 off at any dose with code FIRST40, and every later order is £25 off (code DOSE25). A first year costs £2,711.88 at standard prices if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg, before discounts. Payment options include Visa, Mastercard, Klarna and pay-monthly plans, with no subscriptions. Prices were checked 11 October 2026.

If you want to explore bundles before buying, our guide to Mounjaro bundles and their pros and cons sets out what to watch for.

Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

09 · Support and oversight

Medical oversight and support as a pro

One of the least discussed pros of Mounjaro is not the medicine itself but the clinical structure around it. Because it is prescription-only, it is supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. That review is the opposite of a scoring script: a clinician looks at your answers and decides whether treatment is appropriate.

Review before and during treatment

Before treatment, the free consultation is a short health questionnaire. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. During treatment, our aftercare includes ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team. Repeat orders re-check suitability. This matters because circumstances change: a new medicine, a new diagnosis or a pregnancy plan can alter whether continuing is sensible.

It is also worth knowing how to raise concerns. The patient information leaflet lists side effects and what to do about them, and you should read it before your first injection.13 If you experience a side effect, tell your prescriber, and you can report it yourself through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19

Practical support

Our support team is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, through the chat in your account portal, or by phone on 0333 207 0413. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order. If you want a way to log injections and progress, GLPTrackr is a free companion app for iOS and Android.

Why oversight beats going it alone

People sometimes consider unregulated routes because they look cheaper or quicker. The trade-off is that nobody checks whether the product is suitable for you or what it actually is.

Topics people ask about

Some readers want to know how Mounjaro interacts with specific parts of life. Other guides cover what to know about edibles.

If a symptom is not on the leaflet's list of side effects, it is not a listed side effect. Discuss new symptoms with your prescriber and report them via Yellow Card.

Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

10 · Honest cons

The other side: limits to weigh against the pros

None of these limits cancel the advantages, but each belongs in your decision.

It is not a standalone fix

These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 If you hope the injection alone will transform your weight, you are likely to be disappointed. The pro is that it makes the diet and activity changes more achievable; the limit is that those changes still have to happen.

Side effects are real

Slower stomach emptying and changed appetite signalling help many people, but they can also cause unwelcome effects, especially while the dose rises. If effects are troublesome, talk to your prescriber rather than changing the dose yourself.

It is not suitable for everyone

Some people will not be approved after review. That is the system working as intended. Your prescriber will take account of your health, other medicines and plans, which is also why you should tell them everything relevant. You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. If you are breastfeeding, discuss it with your prescriber.

Cost and commitment

Private treatment is an ongoing monthly expense. The standard price of the 2.5mg pen is £169.99, and a larger dose costs more: the 10mg pen is £290.99 and the 15mg pen is £329.99 at standard prices. Across the UK pharmacies we track, the cheapest and dearest Mounjaro pens across all doses range from £143.96 to £339.00, checked 11 October 2026. Those are standard prices before any discount, and you should compare like with like.

What happens if you stop

Tirzepatide clears the system in roughly four to five weeks after a final dose.1 Mounjaro manages weight; it does not cure the biology behind it. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average. Stopping should always be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load.

Weighing it up

A fair summary: if you have a medical reason to lose weight, you have struggled with diet and activity alone, you are comfortable with a weekly injection and you can afford ongoing treatment, the pros are substantial. If any of those do not apply, the balance shifts. A free conversation with a prescriber, without obligation, is a good way to test it. Our weight loss clinic page explains how it works.

Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

11 · Compared with alternatives

Mounjaro compared with other options, fairly

The pros of Mounjaro look different depending on what you compare it with.

Versus semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic)

Semaglutide is a single-action medicine, whereas tirzepatide activates two receptors, GIP and GLP-1.1 Wegovy is also a once-weekly injection, with a dose ladder of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg; the dose steps up after 4 weeks on each of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg and 1.7mg, so the 2.4mg maintenance dose starts from week 17. Both are licensed, effective treatments, and the better choice for an individual depends on suitability, tolerance, availability and cost. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes; it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label. The licensed weight-management options are Mounjaro and Wegovy. You can view the Wegovy pen if you want to compare, and our Wegovy first-order price is £99.99 for the first pen.

Versus daily injections

Liraglutide, supplied as Saxenda and in products such as Erly at a concentration of 6mg per millilitre, is a daily injection. The practical contrast with once-weekly Mounjaro is the injection frequency.

Versus supplements and so-called natural alternatives

Low-cost supplements are available cheaply without assessment, with no clinical oversight and with dosing that is not standardised. Marketing for them often makes dramatic weight-loss claims. They are not licensed weight-management medicines and are not equivalent to Mounjaro. If a product is described as a natural version of a prescription medicine, treat that as a marketing phrase, not a medical equivalence. See our guide to dupe products.

Versus diet and exercise alone

This is the comparison the main trial itself makes. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 The medicine did not replace lifestyle changes in that trial; both groups received them. The advantage was in what the medicine added.

Choosing between them

Ask four questions. Is the medicine licensed for what I need? Does my prescriber consider it suitable for me? Can I sustain the routine, whether weekly or daily? Can I sustain the cost? If Mounjaro answers yes to all four, its pros are worth acting on. If not, another option, or the NHS pathway, may fit better. Our broader piece on the pros and cons of weight loss injections goes into each in more detail.

Individual results vary.

12 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What are the pros of Mounjaro?
The main pros are once-weekly dosing, a dual-action mechanism that activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors, and substantial average weight loss in the pivotal trial over 72 weeks. It is also a licensed medicine with a choice of strengths, so the dose can be adjusted. It works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity, and individual results vary, so a prescriber should decide whether it suits you.
What does Mounjaro do to your body?
Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet. Side effects are possible, and the patient information leaflet lists them, so read it before starting treatment.
How much weight can you lose on Mounjaro?
In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages, individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.
What are the benefits of Ozempic compared with Mounjaro?
Ozempic contains semaglutide, a single-action medicine, whereas Mounjaro's tirzepatide activates two receptors, GIP and GLP-1. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes only; it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label. The licensed weight-management options are Mounjaro and Wegovy, and a prescriber can advise which suits you.
Is Mounjaro available on the NHS?
Yes, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first. Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. Your GP can tell you where local services stand.
What are the downsides of Mounjaro?
The honest limits are that it is not a standalone fix, because it works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Side effects can occur, particularly as the dose rises; most are digestive. Serious side effects are uncommon: severe, persistent stomach pain, pain in the upper right abdomen with fever or yellowing of skin or eyes, or signs of a severe allergic reaction need immediate medical help. It is prescription-only and not suitable for everyone, and private treatment is an ongoing cost. Discuss any concerns with your prescriber, and report side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
How long does Mounjaro stay in your system?
Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears. If you are thinking about stopping, speak to your prescriber first so you can plan diet and activity habits for afterwards, because the medicine's effect on appetite fades as it clears.
Do I still need to diet if I take Mounjaro?
Yes. Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet, but the medicine does not remove the need for it. Trial results were achieved with diet and exercise support, and individual results vary, so treat it as a tool that makes lifestyle changes easier.
How do I get Mounjaro from EverydayMeds?
Start with a free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Approved orders are dispensed by our registered pharmacy, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm, and free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging.
