Prescription Medications With Weight Loss Side Effects (October 2026)

Several prescription medicines can lower weight as a side effect, but only a few are licensed for weight management, such as Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide). Unintended weight loss from any other medicine should be raised with your prescriber rather than treated as a benefit.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Unplanned weight loss on any medicine is a reason to speak to your prescriber, not a treatment plan.
  • Mounjaro and Wegovy are licensed for weight management; seizure and other medicines are prescribed for other conditions.
  • Never stop or change a prescribed medicine, such as a seizure medicine, without medical advice.
  • Mounjaro's most common side effects are digestive and usually ease as your body adjusts.
  • Licensed treatment needs a prescriber to assess your BMI, history and current medicines.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

Which medicines have weight loss side effects?

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It works by activating GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which helps regulate appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties.1

For other medicines, including seizure medicines, ask your prescriber about their effect on weight. Never stop an anti-seizure medicine on your own. See our guides to drugs with a weight loss side effect and safe medications for weight loss.

02 · Tolerability

Which weight loss medication has the fewest side effects?

No licensed option is free of side effects, and your prescriber decides what suits you. For Mounjaro, most side effects are digestive: nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort affect more than 1 in 10 people.1 They are most likely when starting or increasing a dose, and usually ease within days to a few weeks.1

03 · Who should avoid it

Who should avoid weight loss medication?

Mounjaro is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 30 with at least one weight-related condition, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity.1 A prescriber assesses your BMI, history and current medicines first.1

If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, watch for low blood sugar, because those medicines may need adjusting.13 Mounjaro should not be used if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, or during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. Switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. Tell your prescriber about any history of depression.

04 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects to act on

Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, upper right abdominal pain with fever or yellowing skin or eyes, or swelling of the face or throat with difficulty breathing. Report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19

If you have persistent vomiting or cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away.

05 · Protecting muscle

Protecting muscle and nutrition

Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue. Include protein at every meal and do resistance exercise two or more times a week.1 Hair shedding was reported by 4.9% of people on tirzepatide in trials, against 1.0% on placebo.1 See also GLP-1 side effects.

06 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

How ordering works

How ordering works at EverydayMeds

Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.

  1. EverydayMeds online consultation on a mobile phone

    Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes

Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.

  2. A clinician ready to review an online consultation

Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day

A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.

  3. An EverydayMeds delivery box

    Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What medications have weight loss side effects?
Several prescription medicines can affect weight, so ask your prescriber about any you take. Mounjaro and Wegovy are licensed for weight management, where weight loss is the aim. If a different medicine seems to be causing unplanned weight loss, speak to your prescriber before changing anything.
Do seizure medications cause weight loss?
Ask the clinician who prescribes your medicine about its effect on weight. Never stop or change a seizure medicine to lose weight, as that can be dangerous. If you notice unplanned weight change, tell the clinician who prescribes it so they can review your treatment.
Which weight loss medication has the fewest side effects?
No licensed option avoids side effects, and your prescriber decides what suits you. With Mounjaro, digestive effects are the most common and usually ease within days to a few weeks.
Who should avoid weight loss medications because of side effects?
Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it must not be used during pregnancy; stop it at least one month before trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation.
What can I do if I'm struggling to lose weight?
Speak to a prescriber or GP about your options. If you meet the criteria, licensed treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.
Is 2 stone a noticeable weight loss?
For many people it is, but it depends on your starting weight. In SURMOUNT-1, people on 5mg lost an average of 15% of body weight over 72 weeks. For someone starting at 100 kg, that is about 15 kg. Individual results vary.
