Can a Weight Loss Pill Maintain Results After Injections? (October 2026)

Foundayo (orforglipron) is a once-daily tablet now licensed in the UK for weight management, but its licence does not state that it keeps your results after you stop injections. Your prescriber can advise on your own case. Position as of October 2026.

Pill after injection: the short version

Headlines claim a new pill keeps most of your weight loss after injections. The honest position is that the tablets are licensed, the switching evidence is early, and the decision belongs with a prescriber.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Foundayo (orforglipron) is a licensed once-daily GLP-1 tablet in the UK, made by Eli Lilly, the maker of Mounjaro.
  • Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide) are also licensed, with a strict empty-stomach routine each morning.
  • Headlines about 'maintaining results' come from switching research, not from the licence wording or the main trial results.
  • There is no tablet form of Mounjaro, and no trial has compared Mounjaro directly with either tablet.
  • Never stop or swap treatment on your own. A prescriber checks which option suits your health and routine.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

What the 'pill maintains results' headlines actually mean

The headlines describe research in which people who had lost weight on injections moved to a daily orforglipron tablet. Orforglipron is sold in the UK as Foundayo. The idea is appealing because weight tends to return after stopping treatment, and a tablet might be easier to continue than a weekly jab.

That is a research finding, not a licensed indication. The UK licence covers weight management in adults, and the approved trial results come from ATTAIN-1, where people started on the tablet rather than switching to it. Treat them as unconfirmed for your situation.

02 · Your decision

Is a switch relevant to you?

It may be, if you find injections hard to continue, or if your prescriber thinks a tablet fits your routine better. It is less relevant if your current treatment works and you tolerate it well. Stopping any weight-loss medicine without a plan is the situation these headlines are really about.

03 · Foundayo explained

Foundayo (orforglipron): what is known

Foundayo contains orforglipron, a once-daily GLP-1 tablet made by Eli Lilly, the maker of Mounjaro. Unlike Wegovy tablets it can be taken at any time of day, with or without food and without water restrictions; the tablet is swallowed whole.21 It is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to under 30 with at least one weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.21

In the ATTAIN-1 trial of 3,127 adults without type 2 diabetes, people taking the highest dose of orforglipron for 72 weeks lost on average 12.4% of their body weight, compared with 0.9% on placebo; the two lower doses gave 7.8% and 9.3%.23 Individual results vary. The most common side effects are digestive: nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, vomiting, indigestion and stomach pain.23 Our Foundayo UK guide and the Foundayo product page cover availability.

04 · Wegovy tablets explained

Wegovy tablets: the other licensed pill

Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection, taken as one tablet once a day.20 People on the 2.4mg weekly Wegovy injection can move to the 25mg tablet, starting one week after their last injection.20 That is a licensed switching route, though it moves between semaglutide products rather than promising maintained results.

In the OASIS 4 trial, adults taking semaglutide 25mg tablets for 64 weeks lost on average 13.6% of their body weight, compared with 2.2% on placebo.22 See the Wegovy pill page for current prices.

05 · Pills versus Mounjaro

Tablets compared with the Mounjaro injection

There is no tablet form of Mounjaro; tirzepatide is injection-only in the UK.1 No trial has compared Mounjaro directly with either tablet, so results from separate trials, with different people, durations and doses, should not be set against each other as if they were head to head. SURMOUNT-5 is the trial that compared tirzepatide directly with injected semaglutide.15

The practical differences matter as much as the averages. Wegovy tablets need a strict empty-stomach routine every morning, Foundayo has no food or water rules, and Mounjaro needs one injection a week. A prescriber will check which option is suitable for your health, your other medicines and your routine.

06 · If you stop injections

What happens when you stop an injection

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 Mounjaro manages weight; it does not cure the biology behind it. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average. Stopping should always be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load. Any change of treatment should be agreed with a prescriber before the last dose, not improvised afterwards.

Your prescriber decides when to switch and which dose to start on. Our guides on switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy and new weight loss drug pills explain the wider options. Tablets are also not the only newcomer: see our page on the new weight loss injection pipeline.

07 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1 Mounjaro can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed because it slows stomach emptying: switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What is the newest weight loss pill called?
The newest licensed weight loss tablets in the UK are Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide, made by Novo Nordisk) and Foundayo (orforglipron, made by Eli Lilly). Both are prescription-only once-daily tablets, with their own dosing, eligibility checks and trial results. Neither is a tablet version of Mounjaro.
Is there a tablet equivalent to Mounjaro?
No. There is no tablet form of Mounjaro, because tirzepatide is injection-only in the UK. Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are different medicines with their own trial results, and no trial has compared Mounjaro directly with either, so they should not be treated as equivalents.
Does a pill really keep your weight off after injections?
The tablets' approved trial results come from people starting treatment, not switching. Ask a prescriber whether a change suits you, and never stop injections on your own.
What new weight loss drugs are coming in 2026?
In the UK, the tablets Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are now licensed. Other medicines in development are unlicensed in the UK.
What is known as the 'poor man's Ozempic'?
The phrase is usually applied to berberine, a low-cost supplement. Supplements such as berberine are not medicines, are not regulated for weight loss and have no comparable trial evidence. Licensed options are prescription-only and assessed by a prescriber.
What is the most successful weight loss pill?
No single pill can be called most successful, because the licensed tablets were tested in different trials with different people, durations and doses. Orlistat, a tablet that blocks some dietary fat absorption, produces smaller average losses. A prescriber can match an option to your health and routine.
