Mounjaro is licensed for both weight management in adults and type 2 diabetes in the UK. It is the same medicine, tirzepatide, taken once weekly by injection. Which use applies to you depends on your health, your diagnosis and what your prescriber assesses, not on the pen itself.1

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It is one medicine with two licensed uses.
  • You do not need diabetes to be considered for Mounjaro for weight management, but treatment is always prescriber-led and used alongside diet and activity.
  • If you have diabetes, tell your prescriber and your usual diabetes team so monitoring and any medicine changes stay joined up.
  • Weight-loss trial figures are averages. Individual results vary, and trial results do not predict your own.
  • The pen strengths are the same whichever reason you are treated for: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.

01 · The core answer

Is Mounjaro for diabetes or weight loss?

Mounjaro is for both, because it holds a licence for each use. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1

That means the question is less about the drug and more about you. Someone with diabetes may be prescribed it mainly to improve blood sugar control, with weight loss as a welcome second effect. Someone without diabetes may be considered for it for weight management. Either way, it is a prescription-only medicine used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and your prescriber decides whether it is right for you.1

Our Mounjaro diabetes guide goes deeper on the diabetes licence, and our Mounjaro weight loss guide covers the weight management side.

02 · Your decision

Which use is relevant to you?

If you have a diagnosis of diabetes, your diabetes team is your first conversation. Mounjaro improves blood sugar control and supports weight loss in diabetes, but treatment and monitoring are coordinated differently, so tell your prescriber and your usual diabetes team so care stays joined up.1

If you do not have diabetes and are researching weight management, the licence still covers you as an adult, subject to a prescriber's assessment. That judgement belongs to a clinician who has seen your history, your medicines and your goals.

If you are unsure which group you are in, you are probably in the group who should speak to a clinician first. A free online consultation with us is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script. If the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. When you are ready, you can see the Mounjaro pen prices and consultation. The standard price of the 2.5mg starter pen is £169.99 per month, and a new customer's first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40.

03 · How it works

How one medicine helps both conditions

Mounjaro works on appetite, digestion and insulin response together, which is why it suits both uses. Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1.1 Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.

In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet. That is the weight management benefit. The improved insulin response is the diabetes benefit. They are not separate drugs bolted together; they are connected effects of the same dual action.

This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic). That is a statement about mechanism only. It is not a claim about who will lose more weight, which depends on the individual and the treatment plan. For the full explanation, see how Mounjaro works in diabetes.

04 · Weight loss evidence

What the weight loss trial found

The main weight management trial reported substantial average losses. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

These are trial averages. Individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 A trial average describes a group, so it does not predict your own result.

The trial also reported how many people reached particular thresholds. At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2

05 · If you have diabetes

Taking Mounjaro when you have diabetes

If you have type 2 diabetes, Mounjaro improves blood sugar control (HbA1c) and supports weight loss.1 The practical point is that your other diabetes medicines may need attention. Doses of insulin or sulfonylureas may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar, and that adjustment should be decided with your prescriber and diabetes team, never on your own.

Do not stop or change any diabetes medicine because you have started something new. Tell the prescriber about everything you take, including tablets, injections and supplements, so the plan is built around your full picture.

Our existing guides cover this in more detail: the Mounjaro diabetes week by week guide follows treatment as it progresses, the Mounjaro for diabetes dosage page explains how strengths are used, and the Mounjaro diabetes side effects safety guide covers what to watch for. Our blog also looks at diabetes medication and weight loss more broadly.

06 · Without diabetes

Mounjaro for weight loss without diabetes

Yes, Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults, so a diabetes diagnosis is not what makes it appropriate.1

Treatment is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. The medicine makes it easier to eat less by helping you feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals; it does not replace changing how you eat or move.1

Whether you are suitable depends on a prescriber's review of your health, your medicines and your history. If you want practical ideas for supporting the medicine, read how to maximize Mounjaro weight loss, and if you are curious about the product itself, see what's in Mounjaro for weight loss.

07 · NHS or private

NHS access versus private treatment

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

If you have diabetes, your NHS diabetes team remains your route to NHS-prescribed treatment for that condition. Private treatment is a separate option, and it should not leave your usual team in the dark. Whichever route you take, tell your GP and diabetes team what you are taking.

Our weight loss clinic is a GPhC-registered UK online pharmacy (registration 9012878). Mounjaro is supplied through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, and every order is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.

08 · Safety basics

Safety points to know before you start

Read the patient information leaflet before your first dose, and keep it. It lists the side effects, who should not use the medicine and what to do if something is wrong.13 Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation. Mounjaro should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. If you notice a symptom that is new to you, discuss it with your prescriber, and you can report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19

Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1

Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away. Do not use a pen that has been above 30°C or has been frozen. Unopened pens are stored in the fridge at 2–8°C until first use and keep until the printed expiry date.13 Only buy from a registered pharmacy; you can check ours on the GPhC register, and never accept an offer to supply without a consultation or prescription.

09 · Next steps

What to do next

Decide which situation you are in, then take the matching step. If you have diabetes, speak to your diabetes team first and bring up Mounjaro. If you are researching weight management, work out whether you are comfortable combining a once-weekly injection with changes to how you eat and move.

When you are ready, a free online consultation takes a short health questionnaire. It is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. If approved, your order is dispensed by our registered pharmacy and sent in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging with free next-day tracked delivery. Same-day dispatch applies when ordered by 3pm.

Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance are included with every order, and ongoing monthly reviews are part of the service. The free GLPTrackr app can help you log doses and how you feel. All six strengths are currently in stock, with prices last checked 10 October 2026.

10 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Is Mounjaro for weight loss or diabetes?
Mounjaro is licensed for both, so neither is the "real" use. It improves blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and supports weight loss, and it is also licensed for weight management in adults. Which suits you depends on your diagnosis and goals, and a prescriber should make that call after reviewing your health.
Is Mounjaro good for weight loss if you don't have diabetes?
Yes, it is licensed for weight management in adults, with or without diabetes. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks. Individual results vary, and a prescriber must assess suitability.
Which weight loss drug is best for diabetics?
No licensed medicine is best for everyone with diabetes. The right choice depends on your health, other medicines, kidney and heart history, and goals. Mounjaro is licensed for type 2 diabetes and improves blood sugar control while supporting weight loss, but your diabetes team and prescriber should compare options with you.
Do you lose more weight on Mounjaro than Ozempic?
Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes only; it is not a UK weight-loss medicine. For weight loss the comparison is Mounjaro versus Wegovy. In the first large head-to-head trial (SURMOUNT-5), adults on tirzepatide lost on average 20.2% of body weight over 72 weeks versus 13.7% on semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy). Which suits you depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice.
Is it harder for a diabetic to lose weight on Mounjaro?
Mounjaro supports weight loss in diabetes, and treatment works alongside diet and activity. Your diabetes team can help set realistic expectations, especially if you take insulin or sulfonylureas.
What drugs should not be taken with Mounjaro?
Tell your prescriber about everything you take, especially warfarin or other narrow-margin medicines, insulin, or sulfonylureas (where doses may need reducing to avoid low blood sugar). Mounjaro can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed, so switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method such as condoms, for 4 weeks after starting and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. Never stop a medicine yourself; ask your prescriber or pharmacist to check your full list.
What should I avoid while taking Mounjaro?
Avoid treating it as a replacement for diet and activity, since it is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Avoid changing other medicines without advice, and avoid buying from sellers offering supply without a consultation or prescription. Read the patient information leaflet for the full list of cautions.
How long does it take for Mounjaro to work?
Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, but timing varies. The trial figures were measured over 72 weeks, so treat results as gradual. Your prescriber reviews progress and adjusts the strength over time as part of ongoing monthly reviews.
What foods ease Mounjaro side effects?
Eating smaller meals slowly, stopping at the first feeling of fullness, favouring plain lower-fat foods while adjusting, staying well hydrated and avoiding lying down straight after eating help most people. If nausea or vomiting is persistent or you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team, as dehydration needs medical help straight away. If a symptom is troublesome or new, speak to your prescriber, and you can report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
