A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro is not licensed for dementia or Alzheimer's disease; it is licensed for weight management and type 2 diabetes.
  • Dementia is not a listed side effect of Mounjaro in the SmPC or patient leaflet.
  • Studies linking GLP-1 medicines with brain health are early and do not show that Mounjaro protects the brain.
  • Report any new symptom to your prescriber and through the Yellow Card scheme.
  • Memory or thinking changes always deserve a GP conversation, whatever medicines you take.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Does Mounjaro cause dementia?

No, dementia is not a listed side effect of Mounjaro in the UK patient leaflet. If you notice new confusion, memory lapses or personality change, speak to your prescriber or GP and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19

Reduced eating can leave some people tired or lightheaded, which can feel like poor concentration. That is worth raising with a clinician rather than ignoring.

02 · The other question

Could Mounjaro protect the brain?

This is unproven. Some health-record studies have linked GLP-1 type medicines with a lower dementia risk in people with diabetes or obesity, but such studies show association, not cause. Mounjaro has no licence for this, and you should not take it for this purpose. Related reading: whether Mounjaro helps with dementia and weight loss jabs and dementia.

03 · How Mounjaro works

How does Mounjaro affect the brain and body?

Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.

Appetite is regulated partly through the brain, but that does not mean the medicine treats brain disease.

04 · What Mounjaro is licensed for

What Mounjaro is licensed for

Mounjaro is a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly, licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled KwikPen in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages; individual results vary. That trial measured weight, not dementia.

05 · Dementia risk and weight

What helps reduce dementia risk?

Dementia has many causes, and no single food, drink, vitamin or medicine prevents it. General brain-health advice from the NHS covers staying active, not smoking, moderating alcohol, and managing blood pressure, diabetes and weight. Claims about a miracle vitamin or super fruit should be treated with caution. If you are worried about your own memory or a relative's, a GP assessment is the right first step.

06 · NHS access

NHS access to Mounjaro

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions). Dementia is not a criterion for treatment.

07 · Other side effect questions

Where a symptom is not a listed side effect, discuss it with your prescriber and report it via Yellow Card.

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

08 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Does Mounjaro cause dementia?
Dementia is not a listed side effect of Mounjaro in the SmPC or patient leaflet. If you notice new memory or thinking problems, tell your prescriber or GP and report them through the Yellow Card scheme.
Can Mounjaro prevent or treat dementia?
No. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes, not for dementia or Alzheimer's disease. Some studies link GLP-1 type medicines with brain health, but these show association only and do not prove protection.
How does Mounjaro affect the brain?
Tirzepatide activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which help regulate appetite, slow stomach emptying and improve insulin response. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals. Its licence covers weight and diabetes, not any treatment of brain disease.
Is tirzepatide linked to dementia in studies?
Research is early. Some health-record studies suggest an association between GLP-1 type medicines and lower dementia risk, but they cannot prove cause. No licensed use for dementia exists.
What should I do if I feel confused on Mounjaro?
Speak to your prescriber or GP. If you also have severe, persistent stomach pain, fainting or swelling of the face or throat, get medical help straight away. Eating much less can cause tiredness or lightheadedness, but new confusion or memory change needs proper assessment. You can also report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
Can you prevent dementia with food or vitamins?
No single food, drink, vitamin or super fruit is proven to prevent dementia. General advice is to stay active, avoid smoking, moderate alcohol and manage blood pressure, diabetes and weight. Speak to your GP about personal risk.
