Mounjaro and Similar Products: What Is Actually Comparable (October 2026)

The products most similar to Mounjaro are other prescription GLP-1 medicines: Wegovy (semaglutide) and daily liraglutide, but none of them has the same dual GIP and GLP-1 action as tirzepatide.1 Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes only, so for weight loss the comparison is really Mounjaro versus Wegovy. Supplements marketed as natural alternatives are not comparable. Mounjaro pens are in stock across all six doses. Prices checked 10 October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide) activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1. Semaglutide products activate only GLP-1.
  • Wegovy is once weekly. Liraglutide, including Saxenda, is a daily injection at 6mg/ml.
  • There is no tablet version of Mounjaro, but separate GLP-1 tablets such as Wegovy tablets and Foundayo exist.
  • Berberine, teas and similar supplements are not equivalent to licensed GLP-1 medicines.
  • A GPhC-registered prescriber decides which licensed option suits you, so ask rather than self-switch.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

What is comparable to Mounjaro?

Only prescription GLP-1 medicines are genuinely comparable. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable made by Eli Lilly.1 Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1.1 That dual action is what distinguishes it from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic). Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes only; it is not a UK weight-loss medicine.1

ProductTypeHow it is taken
Mounjaro (tirzepatide)Dual GIP and GLP-1Once-weekly pen, 2.5mg to 15mg
Wegovy (semaglutide)Single-action GLP-1Once-weekly pen, 0.25mg up to 2.4mg
Liraglutide (Saxenda, Erly)Single-action GLP-1Daily injection, 6mg/ml
Berberine and other supplementsNot a GLP-1 medicineDosing is not standardised

02 · Your decision

Which one should you look at?

Start with your reason for looking. If you are weighing up Mounjaro against Wegovy, a prescriber can review which fits you better. Our weight loss clinic starts with a free consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.

If you are already leaning towards tirzepatide, the Mounjaro pen starts at £169.99 for the 2.5mg starter, and your first order is £40 less with code FIRST40. For a wider view, see our guide to medications similar to Mounjaro.

03 · Licensed alternatives

Licensed alternatives to Mounjaro

Wegovy is the closest licensed alternative for weight management. It is semaglutide, a single-action GLP-1 medicine, taken once weekly. The pens run 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg, stepping up after 4 weeks on each of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg and 1.7mg, so the 2.4mg maintenance dose starts from week 17.18 You can see the Wegovy pen on our site.

Liraglutide, sold as Saxenda and in products such as Erly, is supplied at 6mg per millilitre. It is a daily injection, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy. Our guide to Mounjaro similar drugs goes through the differences in more detail.

Mounjaro itself is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1

04 · Tablets and safety

Tablet versions and which is safer

There is no tablet version of Mounjaro, which comes as a pre-filled KwikPen.1 Separate oral GLP-1 medicines exist, including Wegovy tablets and Foundayo, each with its own product information.2021 They are different medicines, so do not assume their results match Mounjaro's. Check current Wegovy tablet prices on the product page.

No medicine is safe for everyone, so there is no single safest GLP-1. Mounjaro and Wegovy are both licensed, and each has its own side-effect profile in its product information. A prescriber weighs your health history, other medicines and goals. Report any new symptom through the Yellow Card scheme.19 Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.

05 · Natural alternatives

Natural and supplement alternatives

No supplement, tea or food reproduces what a GLP-1 medicine does. Products nicknamed "nature's Ozempic" or the "poor man's Ozempic", such as berberine, are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight. Their dosing is not standardised, and they have not been shown to match the licensed medicines. Dramatic weight-loss claims on these products should be treated with caution.

Food and lifestyle can support appetite control, and that matters because Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 That is support, not a substitute. Read more on GLP-1 similar supplements and whether berberine is similar to GLP-1.

06 · NHS access

NHS access

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46 Many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. Our Mounjaro products page covers the options.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What drug is comparable to Mounjaro?
Wegovy (semaglutide) is the closest licensed comparison for weight management, and liraglutide is an older daily option. Neither has Mounjaro's dual GIP and GLP-1 action. Which suits you depends on your health history, so a prescriber should decide. See our guide to similar Mounjaro options.
Which is safer, Mounjaro or Wegovy?
Neither is safer for everyone. Both are licensed prescription medicines with their own side-effect information in the product leaflets. Suitability depends on your medical history and other medicines, which is why a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews each person. Report any new symptoms through the Yellow Card scheme.
Is there a tablet version of Mounjaro?
No. Mounjaro comes as a once-weekly pre-filled KwikPen. Separate GLP-1 tablets, such as Wegovy tablets and Foundayo, are different medicines with their own licensing.
What is known as the poor man's Ozempic?
The nickname is usually applied to berberine, a low-cost supplement. It is not a GLP-1 medicine and has no clinical oversight. Its dosing is not standardised, and it is not an established equivalent of Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro.
Is there a natural supplement that works like GLP-1?
No supplement has been shown to work like a prescription GLP-1 medicine. Supplements are available cheaply without assessment, but they do not act on the GIP and GLP-1 receptors the way tirzepatide does. See our page on what is similar to GLP-1.
Can tea or food increase GLP-1 naturally?
No tea has been established to raise GLP-1 enough to replace medication. A balanced reduced-calorie diet and regular activity support appetite control, and they are part of treatment alongside Mounjaro. They are not a like-for-like alternative to a licensed GLP-1 medicine.
What is the safest GLP-1 to take?
There is no single safest GLP-1. The right choice depends on your health, your other medicines and your goals. Licensed options include Mounjaro, Wegovy and liraglutide. Start with a free consultation so a GPhC-registered prescriber can review which suits you.
