01 · The short answer
Can you claim weight loss medication on your taxes?
You may be able to, if you are a US taxpayer, the medicine is prescribed to treat a diagnosed condition, and your US tax position allows medical expenses to be deducted. The IRS sets those rules and they change, so confirm the current position with a US tax professional or the IRS itself.
The principle most guidance describes is a medical-necessity test. Treatment of a disease or condition is treated very differently from spending aimed at general health, appearance or lifestyle. Weight loss medication prescribed because a clinician has diagnosed obesity, or an overweight condition with related health problems, sits on the treatment side of that line. A diet pill taken for cosmetic reasons does not.
That is also why the wording of the question matters. "Weight loss medication" is not one thing for tax purposes. A prescription-only medicine reviewed by a clinician for a diagnosed condition is a different category from an over-the-counter product bought without any assessment. If you are weighing up where to start, our guide on whether Mounjaro is tax deductible looks at the same question for one specific medicine.
02 · If you live in the UK
What this means if you are buying in the UK
If you are a UK resident buying from a UK pharmacy, the IRS rules do not apply to you unless you also file US taxes. We are not aware of a general UK income-tax deduction that works the same way for private prescription costs, but we cannot advise on this. Speak to HMRC or an accountant if you want certainty, particularly if you are self-employed, an expatriate or a dual taxpayer.
Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 to 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Every order is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and the consultation is free.1
You can start your free consultation to see whether treatment is suitable. If you are suitable, the standard price is £169.99 per month for the 2.5mg starter pen on the Mounjaro pen page. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40, and every later order is £25 off the standard price (code DOSE25).
03 · Paperwork
What paperwork actually helps, whatever your tax position
Whatever rules apply to you, good records are what any adviser will want. Keep these, in one folder, for every order:
- The prescription or dispensing record showing the medicine, strength and date.
- The order confirmation and payment receipt from the pharmacy.
- The name and GPhC registration of the pharmacy, which is 9012878 for us.
- Notes of any clinical review, including the reason the medicine was prescribed.
- Any letters or records from your own GP or specialist about the diagnosis.
The diagnosis matters as much as the receipt. A receipt proves you spent money, but the clinical reason proves what the spending was for. Our monthly reviews and follow-up assessments are recorded by the prescribing team, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than shipping automatically.
Payment is by Visa or Mastercard, Klarna or pay-monthly options, with no subscriptions, so your statements show each purchase separately. The price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees.
04 · Common mistakes
What not to assume
Do not assume that every weight-related spend qualifies. Gym memberships, diet food, supplements and general wellness products are typically treated differently from prescribed treatment, and some tax guidance warns specifically against claiming nutrition and wellness costs as medical expenses. Do not assume a deduction exists simply because someone on social media says so.
Do not assume you can claim without records either. And do not let a possible deduction drive a clinical decision. Whether treatment is right for you is for a prescriber to decide from your BMI, medical history and current medicines, not for a tax calculation.
05 · US rules versus UK pharmacy
Why a UK pharmacy cannot answer the IRS question
The IRS is the US federal tax authority, and its rules apply to US taxpayers. EverydayMeds is a GPhC-registered UK online pharmacy, registration 9012878, supplying prescription treatments in the UK. We are not tax advisers, and it would be wrong for us to tell you what you can or cannot claim. What we can do is explain the clinical side of the question clearly, because that is where most tax guidance begins.
If you file US taxes, the principle usually described in guidance is that a medical expense must be for the diagnosis, cure, treatment or prevention of disease, or for affecting a structure or function of the body in a medical sense. Guidance on what counts also tends to say that spending on general health or appearance does not qualify. We cannot tell you how that applies to a UK-dispensed prescription, whether the expense must be incurred in a particular country, or what thresholds apply to you this year. A US-qualified tax professional can.
If you are a UK resident who does not file US taxes, the IRS rules do not apply to you. Whether any UK relief exists for private prescription costs is a question for HMRC or an accountant.
Wherever you are, the practical advice is the same. Keep records, understand the clinical reason for treatment, and ask a qualified adviser before you rely on a deduction. If cost is the real concern, a clear look at the numbers usually helps more than a tax shortcut, and our guide to the average cost of weight loss medication sets out the ranges.
It is also worth knowing that tax treatment can differ between a prescribed medicine, a clinic fee and a supplement, even when all three are marketed for weight loss.
Tax guidance is updated, individual circumstances differ, and the cost of a wrong assumption lands on you at filing time, not on the website that suggested it.
06 · The medical necessity principle
Medical necessity: why a diagnosis matters
Medical necessity means the medicine is prescribed to treat a recognised condition, not for appearance. Tax guidance for medical expenses generally turns on this. It is also how UK prescribing works.
In the UK, Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable for you.11
Those thresholds closely mirror the way American commentary describes "medically necessary" weight loss treatment: a BMI at or above a clinical cut-off, or a lower BMI with a related condition. The two systems are not identical, and a UK licence does not decide a US tax outcome. But the logic is shared. Treatment follows assessment, and assessment follows a recorded clinical picture.
This also explains why a medicine bought without any assessment sits on the wrong side of the line. Our consultation is a short health questionnaire, free and without obligation, followed by review from a GPhC-registered prescriber rather than a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
What should you do with this information? If you are a US taxpayer, ask your tax professional whether your diagnosis and prescription meet the test they apply. If you are in the UK, use the criteria to check honestly whether treatment is appropriate for you. Our weight loss treatments page covers the range of prescription options a prescriber may discuss.
One further point: a diagnosis is a clinical judgement made by a clinician, not something you can declare yourself. If you think you may meet the criteria but have never had your weight or related conditions assessed, that assessment is the first step, both for your health and for any record you may later need to show an adviser.
Equally, meeting a BMI threshold does not mean treatment is automatically right for you. Your prescriber will also consider other medicines you take, your medical history and whether the medicine is suitable alongside them. Those decisions are clinical, and they come before any question of cost or tax.
07 · What Mounjaro is
What Mounjaro is and how it is prescribed
Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen, the KwikPen, in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1
That description matters for tax questions because it establishes what the product is: a licensed, prescription-only medicine, not a supplement or a wellness product. It is supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and it is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary.
Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1 This dual action distinguishes it from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide.
Treatment starts at 2.5mg and steps up through the dose range under prescriber guidance. Your prescriber decides the pace and the dose that suits you, and the patient information leaflet explains how to use the pen.13
For record-keeping, the useful facts are the brand and generic names, the strength dispensed each month, the dispensing pharmacy and the date. We supply genuine KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, with all six doses stocked and in stock as of October 2026. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance are included with every order.
Aftercare is part of the service. The prescribing team carries out ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments, and offers side-effect support. Those review notes form a clinical trail showing why the medicine was prescribed and how treatment progressed, which is useful context if an adviser asks questions later.
If you track your own progress, the free GLPTrackr companion app for iOS and Android can help you keep a log of doses and measurements alongside your pharmacy records.
08 · Evidence for treatment
What the evidence shows for tirzepatide
In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages and individual results vary. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.
At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2
As a worked example, for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. That is straight arithmetic on the trial average, not a prediction for any individual, and trial averages do not predict your own result.
It also helps set expectations about money. These results come from 72 weeks of treatment, which is a long course. Planning only for the first month or two underestimates the spend, and a possible deduction would not change that underlying cost.
It is worth being careful about what the evidence does not say. It does not say everyone loses the same amount, that treatment replaces lifestyle changes, or that results continue without ongoing treatment. Your prescriber will review progress with you at each stage and discuss whether to continue, adjust the dose or plan an exit.
Nor do trial results settle whether any particular expense is deductible. They describe what the medicine does, not how a tax authority classifies the cost. Treat the evidence as one input to the conversation with your clinician, and treat the tax question as a separate conversation with your adviser.
09 · A year of costs
What a year of treatment costs, before any tax treatment
A first year of Mounjaro costs £2,711.88 if you settle at 5mg, up to £3,599.88 at 15mg, at standard prices before discounts. That covers 52 weeks, or 13 pens. A new customer's first order is £40 less with code FIRST40, and every later order is £25 less (code DOSE25). Prices were checked 10 October 2026.
If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. The individual monthly prices are:
| Dose | Standard price per month (4-week pen) |
|---|---|
| 2.5mg | £169.99 |
| 5mg | £218.99 |
| 7.5mg | £279.99 |
| 10mg | £290.99 |
| 12.5mg | £319.99 |
| 15mg | £329.99 |
For maintenance at 7.5mg, 10mg or 12.5mg, use the monthly figure for that dose rather than a year total. If you are switching to us from another provider at 15mg, your first order is £289.99, a first-order price with the new-customer discount already included.
Across the UK pharmacies we track, Mounjaro pens ranged from £143.96 to £339.00 per month across all doses as of 10 October 2026. The gap between providers for the same dose ranged from £27 to £41. Starting 2.5mg pens ranged from £143.96 to £179.99. Comparing providers on the same dose can matter more than any tax effect.
If you are budgeting, tax relief, where it exists, is only ever a partial offset of the spend, and it arrives later, at filing time. Plan around the cash cost you can sustain. Klarna and pay-monthly options spread payments without a subscription lock-in. You can see current prices and order on the Mounjaro pen page.
For a view of cheaper routes into treatment generally, see our guide to low-cost weight loss medication, and our overview of weight loss injection monthly costs for how different treatments compare. Current discounts and codes are covered in our Mounjaro discount code guide.
Finally, keep every receipt in one place. Because each pen is a separate monthly order, a year of treatment produces about 13 receipts, and your adviser will want all of them, matched to the dose and date.
10 · NHS and private routes
NHS versus private treatment
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
This matters for the tax question in a practical way. Where treatment is provided on the NHS, you do not pay for the medicine apart from any prescription charge that applies in your part of the UK. In England that charge is £9.90 per item for those who pay. Private treatment means the cost falls on you, which is when people start asking whether any of it can be recovered.
The NHS and private routes also differ in eligibility. The NHS criteria are narrower than the licence. The licence covers adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 30 with a weight-related condition, so someone can be clinically suitable for treatment without yet qualifying for NHS supply. A prescriber will assess your circumstances and tell you which applies.
If you are in the UK and cost is your main worry, it is worth asking your GP about NHS access first, and checking local arrangements. Some employers also offer health benefits that touch on prescription costs. We cannot describe the terms of any particular scheme, so ask your employer or benefits administrator directly. Our page on weight loss medication coverage and cost explains how one US public employee plan approaches coverage, as an example of how insurer rules differ from tax rules.
Coverage and tax are separate questions. Insurance or an employer plan may pay for part of the cost, and any amount reimbursed to you is generally not something you could also claim as your own expense. Ask your adviser how reimbursed and unreimbursed amounts are treated in your situation.
Whichever route you choose, treat the clinical decision as primary. NHS or private, the medicine is the same tirzepatide, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and reviewed by a prescriber.
If you start privately and later become eligible for NHS treatment, discuss the transition with your clinical team so the dose and plan are continuous rather than restarted without a reason.
11 · Buying safely and keeping proof
Buying from a verifiable pharmacy protects your records too
Only buy weight loss medication from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register, never from social media, beauty salons or unverified websites. The MHRA has seized thousands of fake weight-loss pens in the UK and has issued alerts after falsified Mounjaro pens were identified. Fake pens have caused hospitalisations, and some contained insulin rather than tirzepatide.7 Genuine treatment always involves a prescription and a clinical consultation.
That safety point doubles as a record-keeping point. A receipt from a seller you cannot identify, for a product with no prescription behind it, proves very little to a tax adviser or authority. A receipt from a registered pharmacy, tied to a prescription and a clinical review, is the kind of documentation that supports a claim if one is possible. You can check any pharmacy against the GPhC register entry for EverydayMeds, and the register is open to the public.12
Genuine UK stock is supplied through Lilly's official distribution to licensed pharmacies, and every pen carries a batch number and expiry date that can be checked. Our Mounjaro comes through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution. Orders ship in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging, with free next-day tracked delivery by DPD, and same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm. Saturday delivery is £14.99.
Be wary of anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription, and of offers that sound too cheap. If a price looks far below what you see across the UK pharmacies we track, ask why before you pay. A low price is not worth a counterfeit pen.
Once your pen arrives, check it. The solution inside should be clear and colourless. Do not use a pen that looks cloudy or discoloured, has particles in it or is past its expiry, and if supply or packaging ever seems wrong, check the pharmacy on the GPhC register and contact it before injecting. Keep the box and batch details with your receipts. That detail links each purchase to a specific dispensed pen if you ever need to evidence it.
You can report suspected side effects or suspect products through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, and a clinical record of a reported reaction is also part of your health file.
In short, the same habits that keep you safe, buying from a registered pharmacy, keeping the prescription and keeping the pack details, are the habits that give any tax adviser something solid to work with.
12 · Cost-cutting you should avoid
Cost-cutting shortcuts that are not safe
If you are looking at tax treatment because the cost is a strain, take care not to turn to unsafe ways of saving.
Cheaper, unregulated alternatives are another trap. Low-cost supplements are available without assessment and carry no clinical oversight, and dramatic weight-loss claims made for them are not a substitute for prescribed treatment. They are also unlikely to carry the clinical documentation a tax adviser would expect.
Instead, work the budget in the open. Compare the dose you need, use the new-customer discount on a first order and the reorder discount on later ones, and spread payment through Klarna or pay-monthly options if that helps. Our look at unsustainable demand for weight loss medication explains why price pressure exists in this market.
The aim is a plan you can afford for the whole course of treatment, not a saving that compromises safety. If you cannot sustain the cost, tell your prescriber early so that stopping can be planned with diet and activity support, rather than stopping abruptly or improvising.
A tax deduction, even where available, never justifies taking a medicine in a way it was not licensed to be taken.
13 · Interactions and reviews
Reviews and medicines: what belongs in your health record
Because Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, it can affect how quickly some oral medicines are absorbed, particularly when you start treatment or increase the dose. Tell your prescriber about everything you take, especially warfarin or other narrow-margin medicines, insulin, or sulfonylureas, where doses may need reducing to avoid low blood sugar. No adjustment is needed for paracetamol.1
A complete clinical record, one that shows your diagnosis, your other medicines, your dose changes and your reviews, is what turns a series of receipts into a coherent account of treatment. Gaps in that record are what make claims hard to support. Ask for copies of anything relevant, and keep your own notes of dose changes.
Our aftercare includes ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team, and side-effect support. Repeat orders re-check suitability, with no auto-shipping, so each order reflects a current decision rather than an automatic renewal. That is a clinical safeguard first and a record-keeping benefit second.
If your circumstances change, for example you start a new medicine or your health conditions change, update your prescriber promptly. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. The medicine's patient information leaflet and the prescriber will explain what to do. Do not adjust doses or timing yourself, and do not rely on forum advice for medical decisions.
Support is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, through the account portal chat or by phone on 0333 207 0413. Orders declined at prescriber review are refunded automatically in full. Dispensed prescription medicines cannot be returned except where faulty, damaged or the wrong item, and you should contact us within 3 days in that case. Refunds take 5 to 10 working days.
Good records are a by-product of good care. Attend reviews, keep notes and keep documents together. If a tax adviser later asks what the medicine was for and how it was supervised, you will have a clear answer.
If you are ready to see whether treatment is suitable, the free consultation is a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation, and the price shown at the end is the price paid. There are three steps from there: a prescriber reviews your answers, our registered pharmacy dispenses, and a tracked next-day delivery arrives in discreet packaging.
How ordering works
How ordering works at EverydayMeds
Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.
Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes
Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.
Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day
A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.
Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery
Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.
Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.
Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.
