Is Mounjaro Good for PCOS? What UK Women Should Know (October 2026)

Mounjaro can help many women with PCOS, but it is not licensed specifically for PCOS: it is licensed for weight management, and weight loss is a first-line recommendation that can improve insulin resistance, cycles and symptoms.1 It treats the weight-related drivers, not PCOS itself. Eligibility follows the standard BMI criteria, so it suits women who meet them.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro is not licensed for PCOS; it is licensed for weight management and type 2 diabetes, and many women with PCOS meet the weight criteria.
  • It works indirectly: weight loss can improve insulin resistance, cycles and symptoms, but it is not a cure for PCOS.
  • Eligibility uses the standard BMI criteria, so a PCOS diagnosis alone does not qualify you.
  • Tell your prescriber about PCOS and any fertility plans, because improving weight can restore ovulation.
  • Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity, with protein and strength work to protect muscle.

01 · The core answer

Is Mounjaro good for PCOS?

Mounjaro is a reasonable option for women with PCOS who also meet the weight-management criteria, but it is not a PCOS drug. It is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 Its benefit in PCOS comes from the weight loss it supports, which is already a first-line recommendation for the condition.1

That distinction matters. Mounjaro does not treat every feature of PCOS, and a PCOS diagnosis alone does not make you eligible. We have written more on this in our guide on whether Mounjaro helps PCOS.

QuestionHonest answer
Is it licensed for PCOS?No. It is licensed for weight management and type 2 diabetes.
Can it help PCOS symptoms?Indirectly, through weight loss, which can improve insulin resistance, cycles and symptoms.
Does it cure PCOS?No. It does not remove the underlying condition.
Who is it suitable for?Adults who meet the standard BMI criteria, assessed by a prescriber.
Does it replace diet and exercise? No. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased activity.

02 · Your next step

Is this relevant to me, and what next?

It is relevant if you have PCOS and your BMI is 30 or above, or between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Mention your PCOS and any fertility plans in your consultation, because improving weight can restore ovulation.1

If you are ready to check suitability, a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews every consultation, and it is free. Start with the Mounjaro pen and consultation, or see our wider weight loss clinic if you are still comparing options.

03 · Why weight matters in PCOS

Why weight matters in PCOS

Weight loss is a first-line recommendation in PCOS because it can improve insulin resistance, cycles and symptoms.1 That is the whole reason a weight-management medicine can be relevant. It does not target hormones such as androgens directly.

Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1

The insulin-response effect is why PCOS is often mentioned in the same breath.

04 · What the trial evidence shows

What the trial evidence shows

The main weight-loss evidence comes from adults in general, not women with PCOS specifically. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 Trial averages do not predict your own result, so be wary of anyone who promises specific results.

05 · Fertility, cycles and contraception

Fertility, cycles and contraception

Improving weight can restore ovulation, which is good news for cycles but has a practical consequence.1 If your periods have been irregular, do not assume you are protected from pregnancy.

Mounjaro can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives because stomach emptying slows.7 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 Discuss contraception with your prescriber before you start. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Our guide on whether Mounjaro is safe with PCOS covers safety questions in more depth.

06 · Diet, protein and exercise

Diet, protein and exercise alongside treatment

Mounjaro is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so the aim is a sustainable deficit, not a perfect food list.1 No food is banned. Prioritise protein at each meal, vegetables and fibre, and regular fluids. Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, and large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly, so smaller, slower meals work better.

Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, and protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance. The levers are adequate protein at every meal and resistance exercise, which matters more, not less, as the dose rises and appetite falls.1

Increased physical activity is part of the licence, not an optional extra. Regular moderate activity such as brisk walking plus resistance work is the evidence-backed pattern, and it also protects against regain if you later stop treatment.1

07 · Side effects and hydration

Side effects and staying hydrated

Side effects are the same for women with PCOS as for anyone else, and we cover them in our guide to the good and bad side effects of treatment. Most are digestive, and the most common are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort. One practical point is hydration. Reduced appetite means less fluid from food, and vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly, which is the main route to the rare kidney problems reported with this class.1

Keep water within reach, and treat inability to keep fluids down as a contact-your-clinical-team issue. You can report any suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.19

Supplements sold as natural GLP-1 boosters are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment.1

08 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

09 · NHS access

NHS access to Mounjaro

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years.6 NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).4

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Does Mounjaro treat PCOS?
Not directly. Mounjaro is not licensed specifically for PCOS. It is licensed for weight management and type 2 diabetes. Many women with PCOS meet the weight criteria, and weight loss can improve insulin resistance, cycles and symptoms, so it may help indirectly. It does not cure the condition.
Is tirzepatide good for women with PCOS?
Tirzepatide can be a useful tool for women with PCOS who also meet the standard BMI criteria for weight management. Its benefit comes through weight loss and improved insulin response, not through any PCOS-specific licence. Your prescriber will assess suitability, so mention PCOS and any fertility plans in your consultation.
What are the side effects of Mounjaro?
Common effects involve the digestive system, and many people notice them most when starting or raising the dose. Vomiting or diarrhoea can cause dehydration, so keep fluids up and contact your clinical team if you cannot keep them down. The most common, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort; you can report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
Which is better for PCOS, Mounjaro or Ozempic?
Neither is licensed for PCOS. Mounjaro activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which distinguishes it from single-action semaglutide medicines such as Wegovy and Ozempic. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes. It is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply Ozempic for weight loss. Which suits you depends on your eligibility, history and prescriber's advice. Compare licensed options in a consultation rather than choosing on PCOS claims alone.
Is it worth taking metformin for PCOS?
That is a decision for you and your GP, because metformin is a separate prescription medicine. Mounjaro and other treatments are not a straight swap for it. Raise insulin resistance concerns with your GP, who can look at your full history and options.
Is it possible to reverse PCOS?
Mounjaro does not cure PCOS. Weight loss can improve insulin resistance, cycles and symptoms, and may restore ovulation, which is why many women see real improvement. Ongoing management, including lifestyle and any medical treatment your GP advises, still matters.
Do I need to be overweight to get Mounjaro for PCOS?
Yes. Eligibility is assessed on the standard BMI criteria, and a PCOS diagnosis alone does not qualify you. The licensed thresholds are a BMI of 30 or above, or between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews each consultation to decide if treatment is suitable.
Should I tell my prescriber about fertility plans?
Yes. Mention PCOS and any fertility plans in your consultation, because improving weight can restore ovulation. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. Switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. Mounjaro must not be used in pregnancy, and should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive.
