A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro is recent compared with older diabetes and weight medicines, but it is a licensed, prescription-only treatment with published trial evidence.
  • Tirzepatide acts on both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which sets it apart from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide.
  • NHS access is being phased in over several years, starting with the highest-need groups.
  • Newer medicines in development are not available to prescribe today.
  • A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews every private consultation before any Mounjaro is supplied.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

Is Mounjaro actually new, and does it matter?

Mounjaro is newer than many established weight and diabetes medicines, but it is no longer a trial-stage drug. It is a licensed prescription medicine with a summary of product characteristics, a patient information leaflet and national guidance.113

Being newer matters in two practical ways. First, its long-term track record is shorter than that of medicines used for decades, so ongoing prescriber reviews matter. Second, NHS supply is still being built up, which is why many adults look at private treatment. Neither point means the medicine is unproven or unlicensed.

NICE has published separate guidance for obesity and for diabetes.8

02 · In context

How Mounjaro compares with other GLP-1 medicines

Mounjaro differs from older injections mainly in what it targets and how often you inject. The table summarises the medicines people most often ask about.

MedicineActive ingredientActionInjection schedule
MounjaroTirzepatideActivates both GIP and GLP-1 receptorsOnce weekly
WegovySemaglutideSingle-action GLP-1 medicineOnce weekly
Saxenda and similar productsLiraglutide (6mg/ml)GLP-1 medicineDaily

That dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide.1 You can read more in our guide to the new drug better than Mounjaro question.

03 · Your next step

What should you do with this information?

If you are considering treatment, newness isn't a reason to wait. Decide based on your eligibility, your health history and your prescriber's advice. The weight loss clinic explains how a consultation works, and the Mounjaro pen page shows live pricing, with the starting pen at £169.99 per month at standard price (prices checked 11 October 2026).

04 · What tirzepatide is

What tirzepatide is

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1

Because it is prescription-only, it is supplied after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and it is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.13 Our own pharmacy is registered with the GPhC (9012878), and Mounjaro supplied through us comes by official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution.

The same medicine is sold under the same brand for both licensed uses, so you may see it described as a diabetes drug or a weight-loss drug depending on the source. Our guide to the new diabetes drug for weight loss story explains why that happens.

05 · How it works

How Mounjaro works

Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1

In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1 How you feel varies from person to person, and anything new or worrying should go to your prescriber.

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system — there is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1

06 · What the evidence shows

What the trial evidence shows

The main weight-management trial of tirzepatide is SURMOUNT-1. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 Trial averages do not predict your own result.

So the claim that Mounjaro is "too new to trust" doesn't hold up: it has randomised trial data, regulator licensing and NICE guidance behind it. A newer medicine has a shorter real-world track record, which is a reason for regular reviews.

07 · NHS access

Is Mounjaro available on the NHS?

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years.6 NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).4

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.6 Your GP can tell you where you sit in the local rollout. Our page on the new drug for weight loss on the NHS goes into the practical detail.

08 · Newer drugs on the horizon

Is there a new drug to replace Mounjaro?

No medicine has replaced Mounjaro. Other treatments exist alongside it, and more are in development, but a medicine still in development can't be prescribed or supplied. Any claim that something is already "better" deserves scrutiny, because head-to-head evidence is limited.

Among available options, Wegovy (semaglutide) is a once-weekly injection with its own product information.18 GLP-1 tablets such as Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are separate medicines with their own SmPCs, and no trial has compared Mounjaro directly with either tablet.2021 For prices of the injections, see the Wegovy pen page.

For wider context, read our overviews of the new GLP-1 drug landscape, the latest new weight loss drug news and what will replace Mounjaro. If you have heard about reformulated products, see Mounjaro new version and the page on each new weight loss drug injection.

09 · Safety and long-term use

Safety, who should avoid it and long-term use

Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems.13 Be completely open about your medical history and your medicines. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.

One interaction worth knowing is that the medicine can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives because stomach emptying slows.7 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 If you take insulin or sulfonylureas, doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar.1

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. Because the medicine is relatively recent, we encourage ongoing reviews, and you can report any suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.19

Diet is simpler than the internet suggests: treatment is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.13 Ask your prescriber for tailored food advice.

10 · Getting it privately

How private treatment works

Our process starts with a free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.

Approved orders are dispensed by our registered pharmacy, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm and free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging. Ongoing monthly reviews are included, and repeat orders re-check suitability. All six doses are in stock.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Is Mounjaro a new drug?
Mounjaro is a relatively recent medicine, but it is licensed and fully established as a prescription treatment, not an experimental one. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes, and NICE has published guidance on both uses. Its long-term record is shorter than older medicines, so regular prescriber reviews are important.
Is tirzepatide a new drug?
Tirzepatide is the active ingredient in Mounjaro and is relatively new compared with older diabetes and weight medicines. It is the first treatment of its kind to activate both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. That mechanism is what separates it from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide, rather than the age of the molecule alone.
What is the new drug better than Mounjaro?
No medicine is established as better than Mounjaro for everyone. The first large head-to-head trial (SURMOUNT-5) compared tirzepatide with semaglutide, and which suits you depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice. Medicines still in development can't be prescribed. Your prescriber will advise which option suits your health and tolerance.
Is Mounjaro available on the NHS?
Yes, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first. Ask your GP where you fit locally, or consider regulated private treatment.
What are the long-term effects of Mounjaro?
Common side effects are mostly digestive, and serious side effects are uncommon; tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom. Because the medicine is relatively recent, ongoing monitoring matters. Your prescriber should review you regularly, and you can report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
Who should not take Mounjaro?
You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. You need to disclose your conditions, medicines and any pregnancy plans. If the prescriber decides it isn't suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
How long do people typically take Mounjaro?
There is no standard length that applies to everyone. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and your prescriber reviews progress and dose regularly. Tirzepatide takes roughly four to five weeks to clear after a final dose, so stopping is a decision to make with your prescriber.
