Is It Normal to Plateau on Mounjaro? (October 2026)

Yes, it is normal to plateau on Mounjaro. Weight loss on tirzepatide is not linear, and stalls of a few weeks are expected as your body adapts to a lower weight.1 A true plateau is a flat trend over several weeks, not a single odd weigh-in. Most plateaus are managed within the licence: review intake, protect protein and activity, and talk to your prescriber about dose.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Plateaus of a few weeks are normal and expected on Mounjaro, because weight loss is not a straight line.
  • Judge progress by the trend over weeks, not by individual weigh-ins, which swing with water and digestion.
  • Check the basics first: portion drift, protein, activity, sleep and alcohol.
  • If you are not yet at your highest tolerated dose, ask your prescriber whether a step-up is appropriate.
  • Never double doses or add unlicensed products to break a plateau.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

Is it normal to plateau on Mounjaro or tirzepatide?

Yes. Weight loss on Mounjaro is not linear, and plateaus of a few weeks are normal and expected as the body adapts to a lower weight.1 Tirzepatide is the active ingredient in Mounjaro, so the answer is identical for Mounjaro and tirzepatide.

Plateaus are part of how treatment works, not a sign it has failed. Our explainer on how a plateau works goes deeper into the mechanics, and the complete UK plateau guide covers the wider picture.

02 · Your next step

Is this a plateau, and what should you do next?

First decide whether you have a plateau at all. Early loss includes water weight, so the trend over weeks matters more than any single weigh-in.1 If your weight has been flat across several weeks of consistent weighing, treat it as a real stall.

What you seeMost likely meaningSensible response
Weight up or down for a day or twoNormal fluctuation (water, digestion, salt, hormones)Ignore it and keep logging
Flat for a couple of weeks after fast early lossEarly adjustment as the body adaptsStay consistent and check the basics
Flat trend over several weeksA true plateauHonest food review, then talk to your prescriber
Little change after a long spell on your highest tolerated dosePossible limited responseFormal review with your prescriber

The review point matters. Your prescriber reviews your response: if you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.1

If you are already a customer, your monthly review is the right place to raise a stall. If you are still comparing options, our weight loss clinic explains how a free consultation with a GPhC-registered prescriber works, and the Mounjaro pen page shows live prices for every strength.

03 · Why plateaus happen

Why did I stop losing weight on Mounjaro?

The most common reason is that your body has adapted to a lower weight. A smaller body needs less energy, so the gap between what you eat and what you burn narrows even if your habits have not changed.1

Mounjaro works by activating two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1. Together they help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties, so most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.1 That supports a reduced-calorie diet. It does not replace one. If portions creep back up, the effect on the scale shrinks.

Other common reasons include:

  • Portion drift: meals slowly get bigger as the novelty of reduced appetite fades.
  • Less movement: people often move less as they feel tired or settled into a routine.
  • Sleep and alcohol: poor sleep and regular drinking can both quietly undo progress.
  • Dose timing: you may still be on a lower rung of the ladder, with the dose that suits you ahead of you.

None of these means you are doing it wrong. They are the ordinary reasons a curve flattens.

04 · How long plateaus last

How long does a Mounjaro plateau last?

Plateaus of a few weeks are normal.1 The length depends on your dose, your habits and your starting point. Many stalls resolve as the basics are tightened or a dose step-up takes effect.

What counts as a plateau rather than noise? Look at the trend across several weeks of weigh-ins taken under the same conditions, such as the same day, same time and same scales. A flat line across that period is a plateau. A wobble of a day or two is not.

Remember how the trials measured results. Trial averages were assessed at 72 weeks, so think in months rather than days, and judge progress by trend rather than individual weigh-ins.1 In SURMOUNT-1, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages and individual results vary. Those averages were reached with stalls and spurts along the way, not a straight line.

05 · Breaking a plateau safely

How do you break a weight loss plateau on Mounjaro?

Work through the licensed, practical responses in order. We cover them in more depth in our guide on how to break a Mounjaro plateau.

  • Review food intake honestly. Portions drift back up, so track meals for a short spell.1
  • Protect protein and activity. Keep both consistent rather than cutting food harder.
  • Check the basics. Sleep and alcohol are the usual hidden culprits.
  • Talk to your prescriber about dose. If you are not yet at maximum, ask whether a step-up is appropriate.

A plateau is not a reason to double doses or add unlicensed products.1 There is no clever way to "shock" your body out of a stall. Extreme restriction or extra doses add risk without a safe benefit, and dramatic quick fixes are the territory of marketing rather than medicine.

If your stall is at a particular strength, these pages go through that specific situation: a plateau at 7.5mg, a plateau at 10mg and a plateau at 15mg.

06 · Cheat days and slow loss

Can a cheat day break a plateau, and is slow loss a problem?

A cheat day is not a recognised way to restart weight loss on Mounjaro. The medicine works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 One off-plan meal will not ruin your progress, but planning regular ones works against the appetite effect you are paying for.

Slow loss is not automatically a problem either. Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest, with most measurable progress building from 5mg onward, month by month.1 Slower early progress does not predict failure, because the dose you respond to may still be ahead of you.1 Our guide to normal weight loss on Mounjaro shows what a reasonable pace looks like.

07 · Look beyond the scales

What else should you track during a plateau?

The scale is only one measure. In trials, weight loss on tirzepatide came with average improvements in waist size, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood-sugar measures.2 These are trial-average secondary outcomes, not promises, but they are why prescribers talk about weight management as health management.

During a stall, track how your clothes fit, your waist measurement, your energy and your appetite. A flat scale with a shrinking waist is still progress. A free tracking tool such as the GLPTrackr companion app can help you see the trend rather than the daily noise.

Stalls also sit inside a longer story. Our week-by-week plateau guide shows where in the timeline they typically appear, and the page on whether you can hit a plateau on Mounjaro covers the reasons from another angle.

08 · When to speak to a prescriber

When should you speak to your prescriber?

Speak to your prescriber when your trend has been flat across several weeks despite honest tracking, or when you are unsure whether to step up a dose. Do not change your dose on your own.

Also get in touch if a stall comes with new symptoms. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. Report any suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.19 Our prescribing team provides ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and follow-up assessments, and repeat orders re-check suitability. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine supplied after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and it is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

Mounjaro is also available on the NHS, with access being phased in over several years, so your GP is another route to a review.4

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Is it normal to plateau on Mounjaro?
Yes. Weight loss on Mounjaro is not linear, and plateaus of a few weeks are normal and expected as the body adapts to a lower weight. A single flat weigh-in is not a plateau. Judge progress by the trend across several weeks, and raise a longer stall with your prescriber.
Is it normal to plateau on tirzepatide?
Yes. Tirzepatide is the active ingredient in Mounjaro, so the same applies. Stalls of a few weeks are normal as the body adapts to a lower weight. Review your food intake, protect protein and activity, check sleep and alcohol, and ask your prescriber about dose if you are not yet at maximum.
How long does a Mounjaro plateau last?
Plateaus of a few weeks are described as normal. The length depends on your dose, habits and starting point. If your trend stays flat despite consistent habits, discuss it with your prescriber rather than waiting indefinitely or changing your dose yourself.
Why did I stop losing weight on Mounjaro?
Common reasons are that your body has adapted to a lower weight, portions have drifted back up, activity has dropped, or sleep and alcohol are getting in the way. You may also still be on a lower dose than the one that suits you. Your prescriber can help work out which applies.
How do you shock your body out of a plateau?
You do not need to, and you should not try. Safe, licensed steps are an honest food review, consistent protein and activity, checking sleep and alcohol, and asking your prescriber about a dose step-up. A plateau is not a reason to double doses or add unlicensed products.
How many weeks is considered a weight loss plateau?
Plateaus of a few weeks are normal on Mounjaro. A plateau is a flat trend over several weeks of consistent weigh-ins, not a day or two of fluctuation. Weigh on the same day, at the same time and on the same scales to make the trend clear.
Can a cheat day break a weight loss plateau?
Cheat days are not a recognised way to restart loss on Mounjaro. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased activity. An occasional off-plan meal will not undo your progress, but regular ones work against the appetite effect of the medicine.
Is slow weight loss on Mounjaro a problem?
Not by itself. Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design, and early weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase with modest losses. Most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month. Slower early progress does not predict failure, so judge progress by trend.
