How to Stop Taking Mounjaro for Weight Loss (October 2026)
You can stop Mounjaro whenever you and your prescriber decide it is right, and the medicine then clears your system over four to five weeks. The safest way to stop is a planned exit with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits already in place. Weight tends to return without treatment, so the plan matters more than the date. Current as of October 2026.

In this guide
01 · The short answer
Can you stop taking Mounjaro for weight loss?
Yes, you can stop Mounjaro for weight loss at any time, because it is a weekly injection you choose to continue or not. There is no contract and no lock-in. We do not ship automatically either: repeat orders re-check suitability each time, so stopping is simply a matter of not placing the next order.
The real question is how to stop well. Mounjaro manages weight; it does not cure the biology behind it. Stopping should always be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load.14 If you have not yet talked it through, our guide on whether you can just stop taking Mounjaro covers the same ground from the other direction.
02 · Timing
When to stop taking Mounjaro for weight loss
The right time to stop is a decision with your prescriber, usually at a review point or when your circumstances change. There is no single correct date. These are the situations people most often face.
| Situation | What it usually means | Sensible next step |
|---|---|---|
| Little progress at review | Your prescriber checks response on the highest tolerated dose. | Book the review and decide together |
| You have reached your goal | Treatment manages weight rather than curing it, so a plan for the next phase is needed | Ask about a lower licensed weekly dose or a planned exit |
| Side effects are hard to live with | Your prescriber can hold a dose longer or step down within the licence1 | Contact the prescribing team before skipping doses |
| Cost is the pressure | Stretching pens is unlicensed, makes levels rise and fall unpredictably and has no trial evidence for keeping weight off; a lower licensed weekly dose is a regulated option | Talk to your clinical team rather than self-adjusting |
| Planning pregnancy or a medical procedure | Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive; if you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Before an operation or procedure under sedation or general anaesthetic, tell the surgical team you take Mounjaro | Speak to your prescriber or GP before you act |
If you have already paused for a short time and wonder what that does, see stopping Mounjaro for a week.
03 · What to do next
Your next step
If you are currently a customer, reply to your monthly review or contact our team and say you are considering stopping. Our prescribing team can talk through your dose, how long you have been on treatment and what support you want. If you are still deciding whether treatment is right for you, our weight loss clinic explains how a free consultation works, and the Mounjaro pen page shows current doses and prices, with the standard 2.5mg pen at £169.99 per month. New customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40.
04 · What happens when you stop
What happens when you stop taking Mounjaro
Weight tends to come back once treatment ends. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average.14
That does not mean regain is inevitable for you. Trial averages do not predict your own result. It does mean that you should treat stopping as a project, not an afterthought.
Feeling fuller sooner and less hungry between meals is what the dual gut-hormone action provides while you are on treatment, so when that fades, the habits you built matter more.1 For a fuller picture of the weeks and months afterwards, read what happens when you stop taking Mounjaro in the UK.
05 · How long it stays in your system
How long Mounjaro stays in your system
Mounjaro takes about four to five weeks to clear after your final dose. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system — there is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1
This is why the effect does not switch off on the day of the last injection. Appetite change usually fades gradually over those weeks instead of vanishing.
If a seller promises a quick way to clear the medicine, treat it as a warning sign: there is no way to speed this up.
06 · Planning a step-down
Planning a step-down with your prescriber
The licensed dose ladder runs from 2.5mg up to a maximum of 15mg weekly, with steps of 2.5mg at a minimum of every four weeks on the way up. Many people settle at a maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg, and your prescriber guides the right pace.1
A practical plan usually covers these points:
- Your reason for stopping. Goal reached, side effects, cost or life changes lead to different plans.
- Your current dose and how you tolerate it. Your prescriber may suggest a lower dose before a full stop.
- Your food and activity routine. Have it running well before the final injection, not after.
- How you will monitor. Judge by trend over weeks rather than a single weigh-in.
- When you will check in. Agree a review so a regain trend is caught early.
Our monthly reviews, dose-titration support and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team are there for exactly this kind of decision. If you are still comparing options across weight-loss medicines, our guide to how to stop taking GLP-1 medicines and whether you can stop taking GLP-1 cover the shared principles.
07 · Habits that protect results
Habits that protect your weight loss afterwards
The habits you build while on Mounjaro are what carry you once it stops. Mounjaro is licensed for use alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.1 That makes your time on treatment a rehearsal for life after it.
On movement, increased physical activity is part of the licence, not an optional extra. Nothing special is required: the evidence-backed pattern is regular moderate activity, such as brisk walking, plus resistance work for muscle. Start where you are and build; on injection days with early side effects, lighter movement still counts. Exercise also protects against regain if you later stop treatment.
On food, use your months on treatment to learn what a sensible, reduced-calorie routine looks like for you, including portion sizes, protein at meals and how you respond to hunger. When appetite returns after stopping, those routines are what you lean on. If you drink alcohol, see drinking alcohol on Mounjaro.
Finally, weigh yourself in a consistent way and watch the trend, not the daily number. Agree with your prescriber when to ask for help if your weight trends upwards.
08 · Why not to stretch doses
Why stretching doses is not a safe way to stop
Mounjaro is licensed as a once-weekly medicine; its blood levels are designed around a 7-day cycle.
Talk to your clinical team rather than self-adjusting.
09 · Stopping because of side effects
Stopping because of side effects
Most early side effects settle, and stopping is a choice to make with your prescriber rather than alone. Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle.13
A minority of people do stop for this reason. In SURMOUNT-1, 4.3% of people on 5mg, 7.1% on 10mg and 6.2% on 15mg stopped treatment because of side effects, compared with 2.6% on placebo.2
Before you stop, tell your prescriber what you are experiencing. If you notice a new symptom that worries you, report it through the Yellow Card scheme as well as discussing it with your prescriber.19
10 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
11 · NHS and private routes
NHS and private routes if you stop and later want to restart
If you stop and later want treatment again, you will need a fresh conversation with a prescriber about your situation. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46
Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. For any restart, ask your prescriber how to resume safely rather than going back to a previous dose on your own.
How ordering works
How ordering works at EverydayMeds
Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.
Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes
Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.
Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day
A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.
Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery
Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.
Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.
Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.
