How to Avoid Sulphur Burps on Mounjaro (October 2026)

The most practical way to avoid sulphur burps on Mounjaro is to eat smaller, slower meals and cut back on very fatty, fried or sugary food, because the medicine slows how quickly your stomach empties.1 Keep fluids up, go easy on alcohol and strong coffee, and tell your prescriber if the burps persist. No food is banned.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, so large or heavy meals tend to sit longer and can make burping worse.
  • Smaller, slower meals are the most reliable change; no food is banned, but very fatty, fried or sugary food often feels worse.
  • Keep drinking water, and go easy on alcohol and strong coffee on an empty stomach.
  • Get medical help straight away if you have severe or persistent stomach pain, with or without vomiting. If you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away.

01 · The core answer

What actually helps you avoid sulphur burps

Start with portion size and pace, because that is the lever you control every day. Tirzepatide helps regulate appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties, so large portions sit heavily and smaller, slower meals work better.1

  • Shrink the plate. Serve a smaller portion, then wait before deciding whether you want more.
  • Slow down. Put the fork down between mouthfuls and stop when you feel comfortably full, not stuffed.
  • Ease off heavy food. Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary meals.1
  • Keep protein and vegetables in the mix. They support treatment, so aim to include a protein source at every meal.
  • Track what happens. Note meals, timing and burps for a couple of weeks and look for patterns.

For the wider picture, see our guides on sulphur burps on Mounjaro and what causes them.

02 · What to do next

Is this relevant to you, and what next?

If burps appear mainly after big or rich meals, changing your eating pattern is the right first step. If they continue despite sensible changes, or you are worried about a new symptom, speak to the prescribing team rather than pushing through. Our monthly reviews include side-effect support, and our weight loss clinic page explains how treatment is supervised.

03 · Meal size and pace

Meal size and pace: the foundation

Smaller, slower meals work better on Mounjaro. Tirzepatide activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties.1 Most people feel fuller sooner, so a plate that felt normal before treatment can now be too much.

Practical habits that make a difference:

  • Serve yourself less than you think you need, then go back only if you are genuinely hungry.
  • Chew thoroughly and take pauses during the meal.
  • Stop at comfortable fullness. Eating past that point is when most people notice heaviness and burping.
  • Avoid lying down straight after eating.
Our guide to reducing sulphur burps goes through these steps in more detail.

04 · What to eat

What to eat to avoid sulphur burps

No food is banned on Mounjaro, including foods people often worry about, but some choices make treatment easier.1 Aim to prioritise protein at each meal, vegetables and fibre, and regular fluids. Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, so those are sensible things to reduce first.

Beyond that, food experience differs from person to person. Here is a simple way to see what suits you:

  • Keep your usual healthy meals for a few days and note any burps.
  • Change one thing at a time, such as a smaller portion or a lighter evening meal.
  • If a particular food keeps coming up, try a smaller amount or a different time of day before cutting it out.
  • Do not drop protein altogether. Protecting muscle matters more, not less, as appetite falls.1

Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so the aim is a sustainable pattern, not a perfect food list. If nausea is also an issue, see what to eat to avoid nausea.

05 · Drinks and fluids

Drinks: water, alcohol and coffee

Water is the best default drink, and drinking enough matters more on Mounjaro than usual because reduced appetite means less fluid from food.1 Keep water within reach through the day. If you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away.

There is no direct interaction between Mounjaro and alcohol, but drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual.1 If alcohol seems to coincide with your burps, cutting back is a reasonable experiment. Moderation is the sensible rule.

Coffee and tea are fine, with no interaction with caffeine. However, strong coffee on an empty, slower-emptying stomach can aggravate nausea or reflux for some people, so try having it with food. "Coffee rules" circulating on social media have no clinical basis.

06 · Remedies and medicines

Antacids, Gaviscon and other remedies

A pharmacist can check what is suitable alongside your other medicines.

Be cautious with online advice that promises dramatic fixes, including supplements marketed for digestion. Low-cost supplements come with no clinical oversight and dosing is not standardised. Ask your prescriber or pharmacist first.

Never alter your Mounjaro dose yourself to manage side effects.

07 · Timing and dose changes

Timing, dose steps and how long it lasts

Burps often feel worse around dose increases, when side effects are most likely, and experience varies widely. Everyone starts on 2.5mg, and the dose can step up after at least four weeks, depending on how you respond and tolerate it.1 Higher is not automatically better, and your prescriber will guide the pace.

Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle.1 Many people choose a weekend morning to inject so early side effects fall on days off. There is no best time of day; what matters is the same day each week.

If you are on a specific strength, see burps on 5mg or our week-by-week guide. For the thinking behind the symptom, read why it happens and why you may have it.

08 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

09 · When to get advice

When to speak to a prescriber

Speak to your prescriber if burps are persistent, are getting worse, or come with other symptoms that worry you. For severe or persistent stomach pain, get medical help straight away. If you are vomiting or cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away.

On their own, sulphur burps do not mean you are unwell. Equally, you should not self-diagnose from the internet. Discuss new symptoms with the prescriber, and you can report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19 Our how-to guide on dealing with sulphur burps has more practical day-to-day tips.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What neutralizes sulphur burps?
There is no approved product that neutralises sulphur burps on Mounjaro. The most dependable approach is eating smaller, slower meals, easing off very fatty, fried or sugary food, and staying hydrated. For anything you want to take, ask a pharmacist or your prescriber first so it suits your other medicines.
How long do Mounjaro sulphur burps last?
It varies from person to person and often relates to meal size and dose changes. Many early effects settle as the body adjusts. If burps are persistent or worsening, speak to your prescriber, who can review your dose pace and eating habits with you.
How can I quickly stop sulphur burps?
There is no proven instant fix. Slow down, stop eating at comfortable fullness, avoid lying down straight after food, and sip water. Over the following days, work on smaller portions and keep a food diary to spot triggers. If it does not improve, ask your prescriber or pharmacist for advice.
Should I still eat if I have sulphur burps?
Yes, keep eating, but choose smaller, lighter portions and include protein at each meal. Skipping meals is not a good response, as protecting muscle matters while appetite is low. If you cannot keep food or fluids down, contact your clinical team rather than pushing through.
Does Gaviscon help sulphur burps?
Ask a pharmacist whether it is suitable for you and how it fits with your other medicines. Changing meal size and pace remains the most reliable first step, and your prescriber can advise if symptoms continue.
Do sulphur burps mean I'm sick?
On their own, they do not mean you are unwell. They are unpleasant rather than a diagnosis. Get medical help straight away if you have severe or persistent stomach pain, with or without vomiting. If you cannot keep fluids down, get medical help straight away. You can also report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
What drink gets rid of sulfur burps?
No drink reliably gets rid of them. Water is the best default, and staying hydrated matters more on Mounjaro than usual. Alcohol on an emptier stomach can hit harder, and strong coffee on an empty stomach can aggravate reflux for some people, so try having coffee with food.
Do sulfur burps mean pancreatitis?
Sulphur burps are not a sign of pancreatitis on their own, and you should not self-diagnose from one symptom. If you have severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting, stop using Mounjaro and get medical help straight away. Tell your prescriber about any new symptoms, and you can report suspected side effects via the Yellow Card scheme.
