A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • No fixed weight in kilograms or stone qualifies you; your height and weight combine into a BMI, and the BMI is what counts.
  • Privately, Mounjaro is licensed at BMI 30+, or BMI 27 to under 30 with at least one weight-related condition.
  • NHS access is stricter and phased: NICE recommends BMI 35+ plus a weight-related condition, with the highest-need groups first.
  • A prescriber also reviews your medical history and current medicines, so meeting the BMI figure does not automatically mean approval.
  • Our consultation is free, and unsuitable orders are refunded automatically.

01 · The short answer

What do you have to weigh to get Mounjaro?

You do not have to reach a particular weight, because Mounjaro is licensed by BMI rather than by kilograms or stone. Two people of the same weight can have very different BMIs if one is much taller than the other. BMI is calculated from your height and your weight, and that single figure is what a prescriber looks at first.

In practice, the weight you need to reach always depends on your height. A weight that qualifies one adult may not qualify another. What matters is that your BMI falls into a licensed band and that treatment is suitable for you.1

Your situationPrivate (licensed) criteria
BMI of 30 or aboveMeets the licensed weight-management criteria
BMI 27 to under 30 plus at least one weight-related conditionMeets the licensed criteria if the condition is a recognised one
BMI 27 to under 30 with no weight-related conditionDoes not meet the licensed criteria
BMI under 27Does not meet the licensed criteria

The weight-related conditions named in the licence include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.111 Treatment must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable.1

02 · NHS or private

NHS criteria versus private criteria

NHS criteria are stricter than the private licence, and they are being phased in. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being introduced over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.4

The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially people with a BMI of 40 or above and four or more qualifying conditions.6 Full rollout is expected to take years. So if your BMI is 32, say, you meet the licence for private treatment but are unlikely to be near the front of the NHS queue. Your GP can tell you where your local area is.

This gap is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.4

03 · Cost and ordering

What it costs and how ordering works

If you meet the criteria, the Mounjaro pen starts at £169.99 for the 2.5mg starter pen at standard price, and all six doses are in stock. A new customer saves £40 on their first order at any dose with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25). If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices, before those discounts. For a full breakdown, see how much Mounjaro costs in the UK.

Ordering has four steps:

  • Free online consultation. A short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation.
  • Prescriber review. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers, not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
  • Dispensing and dispatch. Our registered pharmacy dispenses your pen, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm.
  • Delivery. Free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99.

04 · BMI explained

Why BMI matters more than the scales

BMI links your height and weight into one number, and Mounjaro's licence is written in BMI bands. That is why no single “qualifying weight” exists. A taller adult can weigh considerably more than a shorter adult and still sit in the same BMI band.

The licence is built around BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to under 30 with a weight-related condition.1 If you are below those bands, the licensed criteria are not met, whatever the scales say. If you are within them, your weight is not a barrier in itself.

Because the prescriber works from your own height and weight, the most reliable way to find out is to complete the consultation. It is free, and you are under no obligation to proceed.

05 · The 27 to 30 band

What if your BMI is between 27 and 30?

With a BMI from 27 to under 30, you qualify only if you also have at least one weight-related condition. The licence lists high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes as examples.111

Many people in this band do not know whether they have one of these conditions. High blood pressure and high cholesterol often cause no symptoms. If you have had readings from your GP, a pharmacy or an NHS health check, have them to hand when you complete the questionnaire. Your prescriber will decide whether what you tell them meets the criteria.

Honesty matters here. The checks exist to protect you, because treatment that is unsuitable for you carries risk. Our pages on whether you can lie to get Mounjaro and the risks of lying to get Mounjaro explain why inaccurate answers are never worth it.

06 · BMI 31 and Ozempic

Can I get treatment if my BMI is 31?

A BMI of 31 is above the threshold of 30, so it falls within Mounjaro's licensed weight-management criteria.1 You would not need an additional weight-related condition to meet the licence, though the prescriber still reviews your history and current medicines.

If you are weighing up options, our overview of weight loss treatments compares what we offer, including the Wegovy pen. A prescriber can advise which medicine is more suitable for you.

07 · What the prescriber checks

What the prescriber looks at besides BMI

Meeting a BMI figure is only the first step. A prescriber will assess your BMI, your medical history and your current medicines before deciding whether Mounjaro is suitable.1 The review is done by a GPhC-registered prescriber rather than an automated script.

Tell them about every medicine you take, including insulin or other diabetes treatments, because doses of some medicines may need adjusting. Mention contraception too: Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. Switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.7 If the prescriber decides treatment is not suitable, you are refunded automatically.

If you start, ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and side-effect support are included, and repeat orders re-check suitability. There is no auto-shipping.

08 · What results to expect

What results can you expect once you qualify?

Qualifying does not predict your own result, but trial data show what is possible. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

As a worked example, for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. These are trial averages and individual results vary. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20%.2

09 · How Mounjaro works

How Mounjaro works

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose KwikPen in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1

Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve how the body responds to insulin. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1

10 · If you do not qualify

What to do if you do not qualify or cannot get it

If your BMI is below the licensed bands, Mounjaro is not the right route, and a prescriber should not supply it. Speak to your GP about other support. If you meet the criteria but have been turned away elsewhere, our guide on what to do when you can't get Mounjaro covers the common reasons.

The NHS route in England follows NICE guidance and the phased rollout.4

11 · Buying safely

Buying Mounjaro safely

Only buy from a pharmacy that appears on the GPhC register, and be wary of anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting side effects.7 You can check our registration (GPhC 9012878) on the public register.12

We supply through official LillyDirect supply, Mounjaro direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, as genuine KwikPens. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Individual results vary, and this page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Is there a minimum weight to take Mounjaro?
Eligibility depends on BMI: 30 or above, or 27 to under 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Because BMI combines height and weight, the same weight can qualify one adult and not another. A prescriber reviews your details.
What qualifies you for Mounjaro?
For private prescribing, you need a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. A prescriber also reviews your medical history and current medicines before deciding.
How much do I need to weigh to get Mounjaro on the NHS?
The NHS also uses BMI, not weight. NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus a weight-related condition. The rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions, and will take years. Ask your GP about local access.
Can I get Mounjaro if my BMI is 31?
Yes, a BMI of 31 is above the threshold of 30, so it meets Mounjaro's licensed weight-management criteria without needing an extra condition. A prescriber still reviews your medical history and current medicines before approving treatment.
How overweight do you have to be to be on Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is licensed from a BMI of 30, or from 27 with a weight-related condition. That is the private threshold. NHS thresholds are higher, with NICE recommending a BMI of at least 35 plus a weight-related condition and the rollout starting with the highest-need groups.
How much weight can you lose on Mounjaro in 3 months?
Trial results are measured over 72 weeks, so average losses at three months are modest compared with the headline figures. Three months in, most people are still on the lower rungs of the dose ladder, so a sensible 3-month expectation on a standard titration is mid single digits as a percentage of body weight, with wide individual variation; slower early progress does not predict failure. Individual results vary and treatment works alongside diet and activity.
Can you lie about your weight to get Mounjaro?
You should not. Accurate height, weight and health information lets the prescriber judge whether treatment is safe for you, including checks against your current medicines. Supplying inaccurate details can put your health at risk and may lead to a declined order, which is refunded automatically.
Do I need a weight-related condition to get Mounjaro?
Only if your BMI is between 27 and 30. With a BMI of 30 or above you meet the licensed criteria without one. In the 27 to 30 band, you need at least one condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.
