How Many People Are on Weight Loss Drugs in the UK? (October 2026)

No single register counts everyone using weight loss drugs in the UK, so any figure is a survey-based estimate. Estimates point to a large and fast-growing group of adults, most of whom are understood to pay privately rather than through the NHS, because NHS access is still being phased in. For a closer look at the numbers, see our guide to how many people in the UK use weight loss injections. Current as of October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • There is no official headcount of UK weight loss drug users; every figure you read is an estimate.
  • Most users are understood to pay privately, because NHS access is being phased in over several years.
  • Estimates differ because studies define a user differently: current, past year, or ever tried.
  • Demand is driven by awareness, online access and results seen in published trials, which vary person to person.
  • If you are considering treatment, suitability matters more than how popular it is; a prescriber should review you.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

How many people are on weight loss drugs in the UK?

Nobody knows the exact number, because no national register records private prescriptions for weight loss. Estimates come from polling, pharmacy sales, and NHS prescribing data, and they are updated often.

What the evidence does support is the direction of travel. Use has grown quickly since tirzepatide (Mounjaro) became available in the UK, and most use appears to sit outside the NHS. If you want specific figures for individual products, our pages on how many people are on Mounjaro and what percentage of people are on weight loss drugs go further.

02 · What it means for you

Is the headline number relevant to you?

Only partly. How many people use a medicine says little about whether it suits you. Treatment is licensed for adults who meet weight and health criteria, and it is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber should review your history before anything is supplied.

If you are weighing up treatment, our weight loss clinic explains the options, and you can see current prices and the free consultation on the Mounjaro pen page. Prices are checked 10 October 2026.

03 · Why estimates differ

Why the estimates differ so much

Estimates differ because researchers count different things. One survey may ask who has used a weight loss drug in the past year. Another may ask who is taking one today, or who has ever tried one. Each question gives a different answer, and none is wrong.

Sample size and wording matter too. Online polls can over-represent people who are already interested in the topic. Sales data from pharmacies captures supply but not how long each person stayed on treatment. Because people start, pause and stop, the number of current users on any given day is lower than the number who have tried treatment at some point.

Counts of Mounjaro, Wegovy and other products can also overlap, since some people switch between them. When you see two different numbers, check what was being counted before deciding which to trust. Our guide on how many people take GLP-1 drugs sets out the same caveats for the wider drug class.

04 · NHS versus private

NHS versus private use

Most use is understood to be private, and the reason is access. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years.6 NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).4

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.6 Choosing private treatment does not change the safety rules: Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.

If you are weighing it up, check the pharmacy is on the GPhC register. Ours is GPhC 9012878.

05 · Why demand has grown

Why so many people are on weight loss drugs

Several things have pushed demand up. The first is the published trial evidence. Tirzepatide's dual action on GIP and GLP-1 receptors helps regulate appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties, so most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.1 Trial averages do not predict your own result, and individual results vary.

The second is access. Online pharmacies have made it easier to get a clinical review without a long wait, while NHS capacity remains limited. The third is awareness: celebrity coverage, social media and news stories have made these medicines widely known.

Popularity is not a safety signal, so the decision should rest on your own health.

If you are older, read about whether older people can take weight loss drugs.

If you want product-specific context, see how many people are taking Mounjaro and how many people take Mounjaro.

06 · High-protein snacks

High-protein snacks for people on weight loss drugs

Many people ask what to eat once treatment starts, and protein is the usual answer. No food is banned, but protein at each meal, vegetables, fibre and regular fluids make treatment easier.1 Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, and protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance.

Practical snack ideas include plain yoghurt, cottage cheese, boiled eggs, a small handful of nuts, edamame, lean cold meats and a protein-rich milk drink. Choose small portions, because large portions sit heavily when the stomach empties more slowly. Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, so protein snacks that are not greasy tend to suit better.

Treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so the aim is a sustainable deficit, not a perfect food list. Resistance exercise helps protect muscle, and keep water within reach through the day.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What percentage of the population is taking weight-loss drugs?
There is no official percentage, because private prescriptions are not centrally recorded. Estimates come from surveys and vary with how a user is defined. Treat any single figure cautiously unless the source states exactly what it counted.
What is the biggest cause of obesity in the UK?
No single cause explains it. Weight is shaped by diet, activity, sleep, health conditions, medicines, genetics and the wider environment, and these interact differently for each person. A prescriber or GP can look at your own situation. Weight loss medicines are licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
What is the most prescribed drug in the UK?
Weight loss drugs are widely discussed, but their private use is not centrally counted, so they cannot be reliably placed in any national ranking.
Can Ozempic help you live longer?
Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes only; it is not a UK weight-loss medicine. Anyone asking about long-term health outcomes should speak to a prescriber who can review their own history and risks.
Can you smell when someone is on Ozempic?
A noticeable smell is not listed as a side effect in the UK Mounjaro patient leaflet. If you notice any new or lasting symptom after starting treatment, tell your prescriber, and you can report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
What is known as the "poor man's Ozempic"?
The phrase is a social media label for supplements such as berberine. Supplements sold as natural GLP-1 boosters are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment. They are low-cost and carry no clinical oversight. Ask a prescriber about licensed options.
Are supplements a cheaper alternative to Ozempic?
Cheap supplements are not an equivalent, so they are not a true alternative. Licensed alternatives exist, including Mounjaro, which comes in six strengths and is licensed for weight management in adults. A prescriber will decide what suits you.
Who should not take Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive; it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes only; it is not a UK weight-loss medicine. Read the patient leaflet and discuss concerns with your prescriber before starting.
